Green filters are excellent for portraiture. Especially with people whose skin has a large amount of pigment variation. Also people with light brown eyes will help their iris go darker.

I'm in a heavily forested part of the country. Would green work better for landscape than red in that case?

The only reason I like to use a yellow filter is it slightly darkens the sky a little and I can use it overall a bit easier than red and orange. Also it’s just one stop over exposure

Oh no, you also bought a Mamiya 7?!?! Great video as always! Stray tip: I only thought of this when I saw Nick Carver do it, but with your spot meter, you can just use your meter through the filter (like hold filter up to its lens) so that way you can probably avoid underexposing a lot like what happened with that plant. I need to use b&w filters more, they were fun the few times I tried

Classically a yellow filter was the standard as it took off the high end of blues (which many films were more sensitive to) and also toned down reds. Lots of Ansel Adams photos for example had a yellow filter on them. Personally I find it hard to judge what something is going to look like in monochrome without a filter, let alone with one on. That said polarisers can be really handy and the one for the Mamiya 7 is just nuts, you should get one for the engineering alone. Personally I've been wanting to experiment with a blue filter as a means of cheaply faking orthochromatic looks for skin tones but just haven't got around to it lately, what with it being hard to organise indoor portrait shoots at the moment.
@BadFlashes3 жыл бұрын
oh nice! that is pretty awesome I didn't know that! and I Agee it totally can be hard to know... I think I just need to shoot more Black and White to begin with. A blue filter could be really fun to play around with, I like your thinking!
@iNerdier3 жыл бұрын
@@BadFlashes One other tip, just hold the filter over your light meter or at a pinch even your phone and use that to get a specific filter compensation factor for that light. Usually expensive ones are pretty spot on but it can just make needing to think about it in your head easier if you can just make the meter do it.

Most modern film is so forgiving in latitude, especially HP5, that a stop or two over or under isn't really a big deal anymore. There's a lot you can do later in development to control the negative, such as a low-and-slow developing cycle with a more dilute developer to really bring some of the highlight detail out and tame the contrast, and finally if you have a scanning workflow - a medium contrast negative can be pushed around post-scan like a wussy kid in school (just like Jason was, I assume)

Green filters are EXCELLENT with fog. If you're at a foggy beach, or in the woods with fog, smack on the green filter and watch it give you an almost etherial and powerful image. Also, if you're shooting black and white, seriously look into getting an enlarger. MANY balck and white photos were heavily manipulated on enlargers, and there's so much an enlarger can do with a negative that digital simply can't. Those deep black skies and super puffy white clouds with insane contrast? but still retaining a ton of detail? Yep, you can do that with an enlarger. Hardder to do with a digital file.
