C400 is full frame, good autofocus, comes with EVERYTHING you need to start filming except media… RED isn’t putting anyone on notice. If you wanted a RED, you were getting a RED anyways. What about the C80. I’m curious what your thoughts are on it
@nes.torfernandez2 ай бұрын
I am currently using the OG Komodo and the C70. I’ve also extensively used other cinema cameras from Canon’s C line and the KX as well. In my humble opinion, the C400 is a more versatile and complete package for any scenario. The Komodo X, on the other hand, is a great camera but requires some specific considerations, like extensive color grading and handling large files. I use the Komodo because I believe it’s the best camera for my needs, which is underwater cinematography. Underwater filming is particularly challenging in terms of achieving good lighting and color accuracy. However, for anything else, I prefer using a different camera unless the client specifically requests RED for topside shooting. Recently, I worked as the DoP for the A cam on a full episode of Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom Season 2, and I used the C70 for topside shots. If I’m not mistaken, I used less than 200GB on my Sd card. I want to clarify something I said about the Komodo X needing extensive color grading. It’s not that it can’t be used with a simple Rec709 LUT, but rather that if you’re using this camera, it’s because you want to take advantage of the huge flexibility R3D files offer. If you don’t need that, it negates one of the key reasons for choosing RED

@@carlosq00 I agree. Images straight out of RED cameras just look beautiful. Using IPP2, its super easy to just define your contrast levels and highlight knee, and that's it. Sure, C70 is also a great camera, but I always found myself tweaking the footage a bit more just to give myself a baseline, with the added expense of the files not being as robust as the R3D files. IMO C70s biggest strength is that it's the fastest handling video camera I've used, and the footage is always "good enough." A RED camera though, it is not.

This whole video is crazy rambling. And why do you disable the dislike button??? It is wild that you are suggesting someone buy a Komodo X and effectively show up running it with just a phone. Maybe a student film where you can impress the kids, but I am sorry man... That would be wildly awkward for professional client work. And then talk about file sizes. My god. Not even that 1000 bucks you "saved" is gonna help you. The C400/FX6/3/30/C70 or many other cameras have way more usability to get working out of the box. The RED price drop is cool, but they are trying to be competitive with more than just the C400. The FX6/FX3/FX30 gang are holding down that area way more. And I would offer that RED cameras are not in the same bracket as most of those cameras. They all are geared to more solo operator setups. REDs have never been that. They are meant to be setup with all the lighting and setup controlled. Also the better theory about why the Komodo cameras got a price drop is that RED now being owned by Nikon, doesn't have to have such a high cost to get a return on the camera. Nikon can spread the RED development cost around to other products, and not RED doing it all themselves. I will also concede that probably part of it is to also move RED away from the RF mount, as I am sure Nikon doesn't want to pay Canon.

@@carlosq00 it’s just that had you made these points before the price drop, about your own workflow, and usability than it would’ve been well received. With the komodo argument. Im not as incentivized in a event/r&G environment as it doesnt have great autofocus which is my other gripe about using it in these environments. documentaries, music videos and narratives sure but it sorta is overkill in most other situations especially with small/medium size markets. (Likely will be uploading it to youtube or keeping it internal which basically means you arent maximizing the usage of raw or prores formats.) Plus you need lots of additional gear/storage to make it work. C400/C70 all in one situation. Which iI would argue to be the better buy overall. Let me know your thoughts. The focal reducer argument only works if you plan on sticking with non native mounts. Also if you're spending less money. Why buy the komodo or Komodo X in the first place. Honestly the argument is counterintuitive no offense because of the mix of variables of spending less yet you're still spending more to build the Komodo Camera up. All canon cameras is great out of box. Which is drastically supported by your r5c argument. In terms of remote capabilities...Have you seen the R5 mark ii control app? Its ridiculously good! I believe Canon finally caught up. I'm sure Canon C400 will incorporate it into their line up.In terms of the autofocus feature of the komodo. There is no argument. But Komodo for center focusing will work if you plan on keeping things centered for focus. But what about on a gimbal or for moving shots like on a slider. It will not meet the demands. I do not enjoy manual focus. Reason to buy the C400 is to future proof yourself. Sure you might not need it now. But what if client comes up tm and says we need it to hire you. Its better to have something then not. That goes without saying. To assume most of us have wireless transmitter systems is insane especially after your argument is that you're trying to cater to the audience that is trying to stay within a budget xD. I'm sorry friend but that is not convincing who your audience is atm. But it seems you're catering to the one man band kind of crew as it seems you are relating all your points back to your case scenarios. Your style seems very bias nonetheless and using your own methods as an argument cannot speak to majority of the audience. Take a look at this to give me your thoughts. kzbin.info/www/bejne/d6ebopWPq7aUgsk

I think the C400 will be a very good camera for a lot of people. For me, today, it's not a camera that I need or would help me save time, money, or effort on my projects. Great video! As always, you present well-thought-out, informative, and professional arguments. However, in this case, I have to disagree. Aside from the global shutter, the feature set of the Komodo X doesn’t really compare to the C400. While we can’t yet make definitive image quality comparisons without real-world footage, we already know what the C300MK3 delivers. This makes your arguments a bit flawed in my view. You can easily rent out three C400s to a variety of users, and Canon’s C series is known for being durable and adaptable to almost any shooting condition. From a business perspective, it’s a more practical camera-quicker to set up and shoot in any environment at any time. That’s something the Komodo X can’t match. In the long run, the C400 is simply a safer investment.

The C70 against the Komodo isn't as big of a price gap but the C70 is certainly quicker to shoot with unless you really need BNC. Different world now. Sony is behind at this point.
