It makes sense to give a shot to sim racers since they can easily adapt to real-life racing. Biggest benefit for teams is the sheer amount of sim racers out there. While having a career in motorsports is pretty much impossible if you don't have rich parents, you can start sim racing for under 500$. This means that more talented people can have a shot to prove their skills.

I just started sim racing last year but have a long history of real life motorsports and I'm just hear to say how racing sims blow my mind how they simulate real life driving. What he said in the video confirms what I struggle with in my sim racing which is braking. In real life I judge braking by the g forces and the feeling in the seat as to how much to apply. I never have issues braking IRL. You get some feedback in the sim wheel but I have to rely on visual cues or brake markers more than the actual feeling in your butt in the seat, and g forces of how much to apply. I was already a good driver in real life from years experience of being a hot rod, but sim racing is reinforcing and strengthening things I already was doing by instinct. I had doing trail braking for years before knowing it was an actual term. And what I called "finding traction" was following the race line. This kid is going to be brilliant because he's going to have real world experience in a fraction of the time that real drivers spend years in track days and racing events. And also, competing in races he's going rise quickly because of the countless lobbies he's competed in sims. Because getting a good solo lap time is completely different than a race with others. He already has a developed race craft.

I often jump out of my sim rig into my IRL car and realise a lot of what I was doing in the sim was similar to my IRL car. @@Tweej yep. but afaik he couldn‘t continue on due to not finding new sponsors, ergo not being able to monetarily afford to continue racing - which to be honest is really sad. Sure the F1 game is as far from a true sim as can be, but Jarno has shown his complete & utter class and ability in many more ways than just F1-E-Sports. I personally think it’s impossible to really claim a driver is 100% F1-Material without a substantial amount of data / experience to factor in, be that in various Junior Formula‘s, Karting Championships, GT racing & whatever categories a driver has competed in… but, that said, I definitely think Jarno was & is an exceptional talent & had / has what it takes to blossom into an elite driver. I just wish he would be given a chance, just one last time, to prove himself.

There is often a negative connotation associated with sim racing, as many people believe it is simply a game, rather than a true metric for skill development. It all comes down to your ability to reference and adapt. You’re solely working with inputs in a sim, with very little feeling of the car other than force feedback. This can be both an advantage and hindrance once you are sat in a real race car. The sim is a tool. If you learn how to use it correctly, you’ll be just as fast in real life, if not faster with the proper training.

I know it's way different, but many years ago, I was into Remote Control car racing, gas powered on street cars. When I showed up to the trace track the first few times I was absolutely terrible, really bad. However, over the next few winter months I spent 100's of hours on a computer simulator. I also had a friend who has been racing RC cars for over 25 years (who has been a champion). He also has been driving the simulator. Within a year I got to his level lap time wise on the sim. There have been time where I beat him. One thing I still couldn't do, is drive 20-30 laps without making a mistake, which my friend could. All of his laps where within 1/2 second, mine not so much. However, the next session on a real RC track, I have improved so much that I was able to keep up with seasoned drivers with 10 years of experience. So yes, a simulator can help. But like I said, this is way different than real race cars, but I believe it does help driving a sim for 1000's of hours.
