Reddit has been a shit-show lately. The CEO is actively trying to destroy everything that gave the platform value... and Twitter has turned into one of the worst sites since Musk took over. If you don't have Twitter blue, nobody sees your posts... and it all feels like forum drama where the head moderator is having some kinda mid-life melt down. However, most of us are just along for the ride and do not actually care about Elon.
I'll go into all this more in the video, I just have to write this nonsense for SEO purposes: #reddit #redditdrama #elonmusk #twitter #socialmedia #mastodon #fediverse #forums

A lot of people think their world would crumble without social networks but that's just because they're built around addiction tactics: Take is from some of us Elder Milennials we used to do just fine in the days were you had to go find people on IRC channels or hand over your icq number. Nothing was fundamentally different in terms of staying in touch with friends and internet culture, except for not having to deal with the damned corporations all of the time.

Well said. As many other users have realized, or are beginning to realize, social media sites are really imploding on themselves. For marketing my game, I will begin to redirect all of the content to the game's website, and to a forum from there.

Great recommend from you, years ago! You were the first to cover it so well. Thing is, having so many different forum sites means needing so many different accounts. Not only was needing to make an account EVERY TIME you came across a new forum site you wanted to discuss things in tiring as hell, but keeping track of all of those accounts & sites was even more tiring The ideas of Reddit, Twitter, Instagram, etc are all VERY sound on paper, but in our capitalist society that's due to heavily change course at this point, things were bound to get turned upside down & inside out at some point

I suppose that is one of the advantages of social medias like Twitter and Reddit, the convenience factor is a big one. But generally if you have your browser set up to remember login details and save cookies it shouldn't be that much of a problem unless you're using private browsing.

i personally loathe reddit/facebook/discord for (among other things) killing off the small forums i used to frequent (local/regional car audio, car detailing, make+model-specific forums) but theyre just too convenient for the average user that i dont see people reverting to the older style of smaller, focused forums.

Greed clouds good judgement, this is the curse of these greedy wealthy people, they don't realize they can make even more money and fan loyalty if they let go of greed and think long term, and that would be a huge win for both the consumer and corporation.

We did a lot of BBSing. Then things like Prodigy came along. I belonged to a group on there where we had experts on everything. Ask anything and we had an answer. We had programmers, electronics and computer people (I was one), trainers is things like Autocad, a coffee expert even who traveled the world buying coffee for Folgers, and many many more. We made the Prodigy newsletter in a byline written by the Prodigy head. Then they had to start getting greedy and raising the cost. We all left, nearly 200 of us. Decades latter I have found a few of them, we are all retired nowadays. We have fond memories of before the greed and us meeting in person here and there.

Literally one of the only reasons I keep my Facebook account is so I can go play detective and lookup the profiles of women I meet on dating apps (which is a whole other ball game) to see if they truly are single and if they show any signs of lying or crazy. I used a Ridge wallet for a year or two, and ended up switching to the Ekster leather-ish one for two reasons. One, the lever makes it way easier to get cards. Two, I needed some "regular slots" to put things like insurance cards, social security card, etc., that I feel would just get torn up if you put them in with the credit cards, and the Ekster leather one has a couple of those. I spent a fair bit of time on forums, but much, much more on IRC. That's why I like Discord so much, it's basically just fancy IRC. Still having fun on EasyMode when I remember to look in there. Since I have it in a browser tab I tend to forget about it, as Calkey doesn't seem to have a desktop client.

The death of forums was so sad. New internet feels so lifeless. I remember several little niche sites that were tight knit communities back in the 2000s. Everyone knew each other. I still have contact with my "forum" buddies and we often reminisce about old times. Strange because we can still recall people by their exact usernames and the shenanigans they got up to over a decade ago even though we never knew their face or real names. I don't see communites like that on the internet anymore.

Decentralization is important for the overall health and resiliency of the Internet. It's amusing to me how often "Twitter is down" or "G Suite is down" is in the news. Such "news" is a symptom of centralization...and over the last decade or so, there has been a ton of centralization. It's definitely past time for the pendulum to swing back the other way.

Miss the days of niche forums as well. Always feel nostalgic thinking back to the interactions I had on various forums for tech and games, it all felt so organic. These days Reddit is the only major platform I still have an account with and aside from the handful of subs I actually participate in, I don’t care to explore much. Home page is just lazy political bait, Twitter reposts, and astroturfed garbage. The complete opposite of what I want and used to get on forums. The internet has become the cable TV of this century.

I don't agree with you about corporations per say, they evolved. "The Corporations" were just websites back then. Facebook, Google, Amazon... they weren't any different than any other website at the time. They just did the same thing everyone else did, but better. Now they are corporations. Advertising was Pop-ups and spyware for the most part, it didn't become proper banner ads for a long time. One aspect you should have mentioned though was text messaging on your phone (that was huge when it came out), ICQ, MS messenger, AIM, and even MySpace to some degree. That's really what was replaced by social media, chat programs.

Twitter is not dead you don't need a Twitter blue subscription to use Twitter.
