If a story is written with colorful descriptors such as “my blood ran cold”, “darker than the blackest black”, “an unnaturally wide smile” and of course “sickly sweet smell of death”, I treat them as fiction. There is absolutely nothing sweet about the smell of decomposition, whoever started that nonsense doesn’t know what they are talking about.
@morg6302 жыл бұрын
Yeah, for sure. Normally, I don't like when people dismiss supposed accounts of scary situations simply because they're written well, but those phrases are definitely a sign that something is fiction. As someone with experience writing, if I were to be involved in something scary that I wanted to share online, I would probably write it a little bit like I were writing a story. That's just how I tend to write when it comes to serious things, because it helps me organize everything better and get my point across more effectively. So, yeah, that's why I get annoyed when people call stories fake for reading like a short story. I still agree with you though, lol.
@twilisols2 жыл бұрын
My family's alcoholic neighbor died of liver failure in his house, and was discovered several days afterwards by my dad and another neighbor. My sister was with them and described the smell as "rotting bananas." I'm not sure if that means there was a sweet component to the smell or not, but I think different people could perceive the smell of decomposing human differently. I guess it also depends on the stage of decomp and what they died of.
@sergiocrowe98482 жыл бұрын
Disagree on that one, compost heaps and decomposing things have a horrific "sweet" smell. Its not in any way pleasant but is the definition of nausea inducing. But I get that people and very divergent when hey are describing smells and the like, so it's possible that they just cannot associate such a horrific smell with the term "sweet." But it's hard to describe the underlying sickliness any other way imo.

The smell of death: Scientist reveals how 400 compounds mix to create heady mixture of scents as bacteria rips apart rotting flesh Dead bodies give off a distinctive, sickly-sweet odour that's immediately recognisable and hard to forget. The exact composition of the gas mixture changes as decomposition progresses. It also varies slightly according to the exact composition of the bacterial population in and around the body and the interactions between them, the climate of the habitat, and to a lesser extent the genetic make-up and diet of the deceased.

Also why would he leave the country right after before collecting his little camera if that was the whole point? I love reading/listening to fictitious horror stories on Reddit/KZbin but when they’re passed off as genuine firsthand accounts on KZbin, it ruins it for me.

okay, so i’m just gonna say, i believe the Dad in the 2nd story. The fact that the camera was running for months but only captured darkness and audio, imo, is proof that it wasn’t intentionally placed. if someone was trying to spy on people using the bathroom, or showering, they obviously would have made sure it was actually capturing that kind of thing. not let it run for months just filming nothing. it’s still possible that the dads friend gave it to him with without his knowledge with the intention on spying on the family though.
@ianmendham66712 жыл бұрын
I reckon it’s the mother. The friend probably asked her about it cos they were suspicious of the father and she knew her alibi is that it was given to him as a present so he is to blame.

That last story reminded me of something that happened to my wife and I back when we were engaged. We traveled with a guide friend of hers during this Indonesia trip and were in the process of traveling between Bandung and Yogyakarta. Well we had to make a stop up in a mountain village to spend the night before continuing on. Fast forward a few hours later and our guide wakes us up and tells us that he had a better place for us. So groggily (we had been sleeping) we up and left. While in transit to the new hotel my wife talks to him. Turns out he was worried about the fact that the 2 of us weren't married yet sharing the same room. He elaborated and said that is a particularly strict Muslim area and they do not tolerate sex outside of marriage and thought that they would get the wrong idea about us. It's so bad there that some hotels won't take you in unless you can produce a marriage certificate. Needless to say we were very grateful to the guide for doing that. Tldr; Stayed at a place in Indonesia where the people would have stoned us to death had they known about our marital status.

about the charging device, assuming the dad is latino - at least in my country, the usual charging spot is the bathroom. if i'm honest, the person who raised the biggest red flag for mutualbutterfly's situation was the friend, the way he handled the situation was weird in my opinion.

Just commenting on the second story; I agree with the other points made here in the comments questioning the validity of that story, but add another thing. It is the aspect of "lawyers are now involved," as that seemed to me like an excuse for OP avoiding questions. How are lawyers allegedly involved? The only lawyer mentioned, a family friend, advised going to the police, which they still have not done, so the attorney is not defending the family criminally. The OP hasn't mentioned having an attorney representing her in a suit against the family. So again, I see the "lawyers are involved" statement as an excuse to avoid answering questions about an already weak story.

I know content creators like reddit because it's endless in scope and continually generates itself, but it's so low effort, low quality, and full of try-hards doing their best to impress each other with their corny embellished tales. I don't know how anyone takes any of this stuff seriously when it's very likely most of this is made up, especially stuff from known fiction subs like no sleep, and what might as well be one, letsnotmeet. It doesn't help either that everyone covers the same handful of big stories over and over. I can't say I enjoy it when people make KZbin videos about stuff from reddit.

Second story is very odd. Based on what limited info we have, I suspect the friend was the one who had put it there. Bored, so here's a list: 1) The behavior of both parents, which we only hear secondhand through the friend, is very weird. Sounds like said reactions (immediately going to the convenient lawyer friend and telling the bizarre coworker story) might have been made up by the friend, who never actually told his parents, to get OP off his tail because hey, lawyers! No more talking! 2) He never brought it up again and only repeated the exact same thing when OP pushed; most people would keep their friend in the loop if they were the one who found the camera and it affected them, too. 3) OP honestly sounds a bit suspicious of the friend, anyway. She didn't talk to him about it for a while, but she told her roommate immediately. Taking the device, researching it, posting on reddit, telling her other friends, etc.... before going to the guy whose house it was in is not really normal behavior unless she was, on some unconscious level, suspicious of him.

With regard to the first story, the recording of him walking up to the door with the noise in the background and then opening the door to the cellphone on the floor and the noise immediately stopping can easily be explained by simply putting a phone on the floor, turning the air conditioner on and hearing the air suck through the closed door seams, making a whooshing noise (Provided the apartment has central air). Open the door, whooshing noise stops. A fine campfire tale. He did not explain how he unlocked the phone.

If the bathroom camera is true, a simple way to see if the father's story may be true: check the dates of the videos on the SD card. If it contains files with dates reaching way way back, then no one has probably accessed it, because they almost certainly would have deleted files to keep it from filling up. If the files were all recent, that means someone was taking the card out and viewing and removing files. But anyway, a 32GB card that was capturing video should definitely have been filled up long ago, and if it hadn't, someone was maintaining it. The lack of details in the story about the dates of videos makes me believe it is *not* a true story

I personally think the Dad in the mutualbutterfly story is innocent. The fact that the camera was placed in such an obvious spot out in the open, combined with the fact that it was only picking up sound accompanied by a black screen, doesn't sound all that malicious. It genuinely sounds to me like hes just an old dude who assumed it was a charging block. Its never even stated if the guy has a laptop or phone he can put the SD card into, assuming he even knows how to do that. Even op doesn't seem to think it was intentional on his part, and shes the one who's actually involved in the situation. I suppose I'm partially biased though, because I'm hardwired at this point not to believe in Redditor theories because they have a really bad track record of trying to play judge, jury, and executioner. I mean, to immediately conclude that the guy is in some sort of elaborate diddler ring when he doesn't even know which way the camera is supposed to point is an absurdly huge leap. I also don't like the comment seemingly intending to guilt trip op into going to the police for the sake of other victims. If she really is a victim of something malicious, they'll respect her decision to do things her own way at her own pace.

Can someone answer this? (Regarding story #2) 1) If it has a memory card inside, doesn’t that usually mean the memory card would need to be removed for access to the recorded media? And if it could be accessed remotely, I would think some sort of information can be back tracked through the device / memory card. 2) Wouldn’t the date of recording be important? If it was given to the father on the date of X, then shouldn’t the media go back that far as well? Additionally I assume that it records anytime it is plugged in, so wouldn’t the memory get full after a certain point in time? I feel like looking at the dates of the first recording / date of the last recording is a key part of this story that’s missing. If it was given to him a year ago, the media should go back a year as well. If the media is all recent within the time of finding, then I would be highly suspicious.

Even if the second story is fake or exaggerated, I can’t help but feel like it’s an important story for people to consider. Hidden cameras are a major issue in a lot of places (changing rooms, public restrooms, hotels, etc.), and depending on where you live, they can be a disgustingly common thing.
