I'd have sympathy for her had she not sat on this info for 30 years, doing nothing. The fact she was abused herself just makes it worse. She KNOWS the damage done, but does nothing to protect others. Does she honestly believe they stopped when they moved? Is she really that stupid? Of course they didn't stop. She knows they didn't. But she's done nothing.
@MissVanHelsing
@MissVanHelsing 8 ай бұрын
@thehangmansdaughter1120 it's not that simple. Whilst I agree that she needs to take action by bringing this to the police now, she's not stupid. She's afraid, she's considerate of her own bias due to the abuse, refraining from being impulsive, and has natural human instincts to protect her wellbeing regarding the backlash that would have occurred to her had she done this whilst she was younger - as well as her psychological well-being and her current families wellbeing by not stirring shit when she's not 100% certain. That, combined with a huge likelihood of self doubt due to trauma messing with her brain and the overwhelming PTSD she would have sustained, makes it less black and white then what you're making out. Plus she already HAS gone to the police, she was turned away that least once for a lack of evidence and became overwhelmed with an already overwhelming process after her house caught fire and she lost the police details. I believe the details would have been easy to recover simply by going back to the police, and she needs to do it now. The opportunity may have just been used as an out for her to put it off for a while because it's traumatising. She obviously does know what it's like to be abused and wants to help solve the case for the girls and their families who suffered. I'm not sure what asking reddit would do as far as helping her get contact info for the police, though. She just needs to go to the police and enquire. Especially whilst her step father is still alive so they can compare DNA evidence. Edit: grammar

I think, honestly, they just have such a low bar for what qualifies that they can pick up more. It is the same country that threw a guy in for that charge for having drawings of the kids from The Simpsons. A broader scope for what you can charge for makes it a lot easier to scoop them up and retain those charges after the fact, leading to those higher numbers. In other words You get picked up in Australia for that sort of crime and you're screwed because even if you deleted and hid the traditionally bad materials you're never going to hide everything and they don't even have to find actual children in materials for it to qualify thanks to the precedent-setting case. In short: I think they just care more. They have broader classifications, and they're involved in almost every bust we have heard about because they're willing to be.

Like the comment above said, you’re likely to see more cases of assault in countries that care. That’s why in Canada and Europe there was a “r*pe crisis” when countries were just classifying and prosecuting cases more justly, such as how many people, how many times, and what kind of assault are often all a different charge in a case. Also Australia is close to countries where prostitution and children being in dire situations are prevalent among the poor, like the Philippines

My boyfriend was bit by a woman's aggressive off-leash dog years ago. The doctor said they could treat for rabies immediately, or wait for the dog's test results to come back. He opted to get the shots immediately, which I am grateful for, since less than a week after the bite the dog had died. Of rabies. Don't mess around. Get the treatment. I’ve heard my own Mr. Cruel rumor myself. My family emigrated to the US from Victoria when I was a child. When I was a teenager, I read about Mr. Cruel and being a true crime freak, I dug into it a lot. One day I mentioned it to my mother and she just casually said “oh yeah, he’s dead”. I had to inquire some more and she told me the story as she knew it. While we were living in Victoria, my mother dated an Inspector from VicPol. According to him, not too long after the last Mr. Cruel attack, the police got dispatched to a fatal motor vehicle crash. The driver was killed on impact but matched the general physical description of Mr. Cruel. Inside the car they found several items (she believes a mask and some other clothing were part of it) that gave them sufficient cause to believe the driver was, in fact, Mr. Cruel. Supposedly his house lined up with what they knew of Mr. Cruel’s residence as well (in an airport flight path, etc). The police never publicly announced this because they didn’t have enough proof that they were willing to name someone specifically, and they didn’t want to close the case without a conviction just in case they were wrong. The attacks stopped after the crash. Of course, I have no way of knowing if this is true at all. My mother could have misremembered or her partner could have made it up to either tell an interesting story or to allay some of her fears as a young mother living alone in Melbourne. There’s no way to know now either.

I know a researcher on this very topic who has tracked down many police who either worked on these cases or are interested in them. They claim just about every police officer or detective nominates a different suspect. Only recently Australia’s best known TV detective, an ex-homicide detective with a 99 % success rate, nominated a criminal who was shot dead at a failed Melbourne Airport heist in 1992. Another suspect to add to the list.

Cruel are slim, but i think people make her out to be some attention-seeking liar when, as a CSA victim myself, i would also be very nervous and obsessive over any coincidences if i thought my abuser was hurting other people. I want to note that when you have been abused by someone and you don’t know what their fate is, you are always wondering if they are doing the same thing to someone else, or if they have escalated to something more. I don’t think she’s making it up, I think she’s horrified at the thought that someone who abused her could’ve potentially moved on to someone else. As someone who has people like that in my past (not to that degree, but heinous people nonetheless), I absolutely agree. In fact the past couple days I had a realization about a groomer who got to me, and how he had security cameras all around the perimeter of his house, and would check on them pretty intently when I was there. I naively thought at the time that he was just kinda "weird" and didn't think much of it. But after not thinking about it for years, I kinda realized that he probably had previous victims and stuff, probably younger than me. I was 17 at the time, which was technically legal where I am. I can only hope that because he's so gross now that nobody else gets roped into his control

This is the truth. Not as nightmarish as what happened to her or a lot of other people here by a longshot, but I was inappropriately touched by my step-grandfather, whom I wholeheartedly trusted and cared about, twice when I was around 9. I constantly worry he's touching or doing worse to children who are brought to that house when their parents want to visit, he'd already been in legal trouble for molesting one of his sons before then. None of this was unknown to my grandmother, she knew and just willingly left me with him unsupervised and both of these moments happened while other peple were home, but in other rooms. My mother, bless her, let me stay home after I told her. Never had to go there again unless I chose to. Her mother, at some point after all of it happened, would tell her about the incident with him very possibly molesting one of his own sons. She's incredibly upset it was just... allowed to happen to me, basicallu. My grandmother also left my mom with her (gm's) brother when she was 6, who was a known pedophile. Don't think I need to say what happened to her back then. Apologies for the ramble, but I felt all the context was needed.

That Reddit post annoyed me, to be honest. I know it was posted in a thread about scary stuff, but there's no need to fudge the details and exaggerate certain things just to freak people out. Sure, rabies is a serious thing that people should stay vigilant about when they're in the wilderness or around wild animals,but what irks me is that it's generally a lot rarer than the poster implies and the scenario they describe is improbable.

I think that’s pretty much been disproven at this point. With genetic genealogy we now know there are a bunch of “once and done” killers, we once thought they couldn’t stop, but turns out a lot of them do in fact stop for a variety of reasons. Look at the Golden State Killer who is an example of a serial killer who stopped later in life.

Thoughts regarding the Mr. Cruel post on Reddit: There are several things that is known about Mr.Cruel that doesn’t fit the poster’s description of her childhood abusers. Even though Mr. Cruel’s sexual assaults were despicable beyond words, his manner wasn’t. He was in fact described by the victims as soft spoken and, in contrast to what most people believe due to his moniker, seemed to care about the victims. One victim described him as “gentle”. He gave another victim a sandwich, milk and lemonade. To remove forensic evidence he bathed his victims carefully, with one victim describing the act as "like a mother washing a baby". According to the victims he lived in a fantasy that he was “married” to each girl. The fact that he didn’t kill the first three victims, but dropped them off and told them to call home, is not compatible with complete lack of empathy or a pronounced sadistic nature. Moreover, he didn’t physically hurt any of the victim’s siblings when incapacitating them, nor their parents that I’m aware of, even though he caused severe psychological trauma to both the victims, their families and in a wider perspective to the community as a whole. A very common, and perhaps understandable, misconception is that all pedophiles are sadistic psychopaths who lack empathy and remorse, but that not the case. At least two studies have shown that violent sexual behavior and sadism against children are more common among perpetrators (by far mostly men) who normally don’t identify themselves as pedophiles or show specific sexual interest towards children. Their goal is power and complete control over vulnerable victims. Any vulnerable victim. The same men usually physically and emotionally abuse adult women (or men) too. Pedophiles on the other hand more commonly delude themself that what they’re doing is “love” and have therefore no interest in hurting children as that contradicts their fantasy of “love”. I believe Mr. Cruel belonged in the latter category. That said, there are of course exceptions and quite a few known examples of sadistic pedophiles too. That Mr. Cruel was aware of how police collect forensic evidence, to such a degree that he bathed his victims, clipped their fingernails and toenails, brushed and flossed their teeth etc, does not necessarily mean that he was a “neat freak”. It rather indicates that he may have had a background in law enforcement, or at the very least had made considerable research in that field. However, I sincerely doubt his knowledge of police work was limited to forensics alone. What also may speak against the Reddit poster’s suspicion is that Mr. Cruel spent a great deal of time staking out the families and planning the abductions. It took up a lot of his time. For example, Mr. Cruel already knew the name of at least one victim when he abducted her and he knew that the children would be home alone in at least two of the cases. He also knew what they didn’t have, for instance security systems or dogs that could warn the families or attack him. It’s been rightfully speculated that Mr. Cruel may have been an employee of the local school system since all four of the assaults and abductions happened during school breaks. Someone new to the community would probably not have access to that kind of information and stick out if he tried to get it. My guess is that Mr. Cruel somewhat knew his victims, although from a safe distance. As in the quote by Marcus Aurelius “We begin by coveting what we see every day.” That the poster’s stepfather closely followed the reports about Mr. Cruel does not necessarily mean he actually was Mr. Cruel. Men who sexually abuse children are well known to be drawn to other men with the same interest, and often keep track of other sexual predators in media. There’s also the possibility that her stepfather followed the news because he was afraid that his own abuse could draw the police’s attention to him. When one child predator is being hunted by a task force, chances are that many other predators get caught in the same net - which indeed was the case in the Mr. Cruel investigation too. Though there are many known serial killers who sadly have targeted children, it does not in any way define serial killers in general. The stepfather’s interest was possibly more of a gory sadistic nature, especially given the specific names the Reddit poster mentioned and the stepfather’s own alleged inclinations. But it’s only fair to point out that a huge amount of people all over the world are fascinated by serial killers and true crime in general (we’re watching this video for example), without being violent, committing crimes or being a danger to society. Why did he stop? I personally speculate that when Mr. Cruel killed Karmain Chan his delusion of being “married” to the children shattered completely and destroyed his fantasy beyond repair. I think it’s very possible that Chan managed to free herself from the blindfold at some point and saw him, therefore he had to kill her. He is known to have said “My freedom is worth more than your life". There’s also a possibility that she recognized him, thus positively could identify him. Regardless, it’s possible that Mr. Cruel simply couldn’t cope with the murder afterwards. In fact most people who commit murder can’t. Murder wasn’t part of his fantasy. In his mind he “loved” the girls and was supposed to release them and continue the fantasy. I think it’s quite possible that the act of murder shocked him and ultimately consumed him. In his twisted mind he justified rape as “love” and threats as a mean to go through with it. But there’s a huge difference between verbally threatening someone and actually murdering a child. Mr. Cruel is a case that I first read about in the early 90’s and over the years I’ve tried to research it further but the information has been very sparse. It wasn’t until 2016 the police released a little more information about the case and revealed the seven suspects that they hadn’t been able to rule out. I would love to see a longer video about this case Cadaber.

Recently realized that I had a close encounter with an infected bat when I was younger. I was so worried about it being out on the ground during the day, come to learn years later that being out during the day and not being able to fly are signs of rabies in bats. Felt guilty at the time that I didn't try to help it, but knowing what I do now, I'm relieved. Poor little bat though. Even knowing I didn't come into contact with it, I still feel petrified at the thought of having somehow become infected. Retroactive terror is such a weird experience.

The part that's wrong about rabies? That "IT'S EVERYWHERE". There are areas of the world which are free from rabies, like Western Europe. In the US, there's a couple of hundred cases a year, and in the whole world, there are 3,000,000,000 people living in countries with rabies - and only 59,000 die from it. 0.002% of the population that is anywhere near rabies-infected animals. Western Europeans - we're lucky, it's basically not a problem for us. Americans - you are at *far* more risk of being killed by contaminated lettuce than by rabies. Africans and Asians - if you live somewhere with good internet access, you're probably in the clear. Don't do anything risky, but chill out! It's not something you're ever likely to encounter. One topic that genuinely scares me is diseases. Ever since I was a kid, I went through phases where I would obsess over different diseases I learned about...Ebola, the Black Death, smallpox, yellow fever, West Nile virus, etc. Rabies is definitely on that list as well, and the newest one that I've learned about in the last year or so are prion diseases. They're another one that we have no real way to combat, and even scientists don't even fully understand them, if what I remember hearing is correct. I think the most well known one is the guy who got some kind of prion disease like fatal familial insomnia or something? And died of sleep deprivation, essentially, slowly and painfully, and documented it for science and the public, to raise awareness. Horrific story. Would love to hear your thoughts on prion diseases!
@JustAnotherBuckyLover
@JustAnotherBuckyLover 8 ай бұрын
I mean, we do know how they cause disease, we just don't fully understand the normal functions of the protein yet The most well-known one is probably vCJD - aka the human version of "Mad Cow Disease". Either that or kuru. Or scrapie in sheep, and BSE in cattle. And we know precisely what prions are - they're simply a misfolded protein which have the ability to trigger the healthy protein in the brain to start misfolding as well. FFI differs from many prion diseases in that vCJD, scrapie, kuru, BSE etc are transmissible, while FFI is a hereditary genetic disorder. And Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and ALS are called prion-like diseases too, because they cause similar damages in the disease process too. It's a fascinating subject, but as long as you don't eat the brain or spinal cord tissue of animals (including humans), you should be fine against the TSEs. I'm a medical microbiologist, and prion diseases were a specific project I covered during my degree. So prions and emerging & re-emerging viral diseases (my dissertation subject) were my hot topics. In fact, I tried SUPER hard to get a position in the lab that was researching BSE and scrapie during my industrial year, but sadly, that position was incredibly popular and I wasn't one of the lucky ones.

What I find particularly interesting about rabies is the mechanism behind hydrophobia. The virus itself doesn't instill a fear of water in its victims. Rather, it scrambles the circuitry in the part of the brain which stores routines for basic bodily functions, such as swallowing. This makes it so when victims try to swallow, a painful, chaotic series of contractions and cramps happens instead. Victims fear water because severe dehydration can cause this sequence to happen instinctively in anticipation of drinking, so even looking at drinks and thinking about them can cause incredible pain and discomfort.

I'm not saying the girl in the first one is a liar but, it would be extremely easy to just write up a story about the case just like that one 30 years later with all the facts easily accessible and without providing any kind of proof. Just modeling the story around the clues that are made public and create a narrative that fits seamlessly around it all. The fact that she wouldn't talk to any other person than the one police officer that one time seems a bit fishy too. If it is to be believed that everyone else has turned her away that is, which I find kind of hard to believe. As if they would only go forward with completely open and shut cases. That along with the fact that she had no problem going to the police before, but is too afraid to do it now all these years later. What changed to make it so much more dangerous now all of a sudden? Don't get me wrong, I would love for it all to be true, in the sense that she would actually get in touch with police and help solve the case once and for all but as it stands from this brief piece of information about it, it doesn't seem too likely.

It also strains credulity that she's so worried about blowback when she has already supposedly put her brother behind bars once. Sure she has kids now, but there's no taking away that bad blood now.

Well, the messed up thing about rabies care if you get bit and also live in the States is the huge expense. There was a story out of Texas of a woman who was bit by a known rabid bat in the parking garage of her apartment complex and couldn’t afford the $3000 shot. The headline was ‘woman refuses rabies shot’ even though she actually wanted it but couldn’t afford the out of pocket cost like all working class Americans.

OP from this first story about Mr. cruel never said that she went to the police multiple times and turned away. She said she went once and actually talked to someone in the task force but then conveniently forgot about it. OP also states that there is a common belief in Australia that you don't shit where you eat and OP uses that as an example of why her father or stepbrother didn't do that to her, yet Mr. cruel committed those crimes near the area where OP and her family was living at the time so that doesn't make any sense either

Before being treated for OCD, I had a terrible anxious hyperfixation on rabies, so I empathize with you. I was comforted by the actual medical facts and statistics. There are only one to three cases of rabies in humans in the US per year. The Reddit post also got one very important fact wrong: Rabies does not live for more than 24 hours in a deceased host. It's a very fragile virus in normal conditions (outside of a host, it'll be dead within minutes to maybe an hour if room temperature). The only time its life can ever be prolonged as described by the Reddit OP is if kept at a freezing temperature and out of UV light. It also can't be considered infectious if the virus is in a dry material because of how quickly it'll die. It's very picky, actually, not quite the invincible super-virus OP made it out to be. Still scary enough for a well-written Reddit post, sure, but suffice to say I am sure you'll be fine! I can essentially guarantee that you're not going to catch it in this lifetime!

To him, she was his step father; probably thought she would never think he could be Mr. Cruel. Two different things. Maybe he took his frustration out on her or others close to him when he stopped being Mr. Cruel. That is, if he was Mr. Cruel. From what the OP wrote, Id also suspect her father and/or brother of being Mr. Cruel. Additionally, the police aren’t even sure if Mr Cruel is responsible for the murder of Karmein Chan. He’s a suspect though. Not enough evidence to confirm she was a Mr. Cruel victim or not. AND that was the last victim. Even if it wasn’t Mr. Cruel, maybe being suspected forced him to stop. Or maybe it was him, and the murder was too intense or he was close to getting caught. Theres numerous reasons why he could have stopped. He might even be dead. Who knows. It was just a thought.

If you’re really worried about rabies, pre-exposure immunizations are available, they are usually recommended to vets and people traveling abroad. Two of the medical things I'm most scared of are Rabies and Sepsis. Rabies are probably worse since first symptoms already mean you're dead but sepsis is no better. You can get an infection without even knowing how, there were people that got infected by just having a small tear on a skin licked by a dog and they got the bacteria inside, or you can be alergic to something that got into your bloodstream without you even realizing just like that bat bite in the story....and when it gets infected, depending on your body response, you can develop sepsis in a couple of hours, not even a day....and when you get sepsis you will at best end up with your limbs amputated as your body will literally reject them. It's fucking scary.

He then got hit with a few other things that doctors said was about as likely as getting hit by lightening twice. The poor kid has had so much damage that we will be wheelchair-bound his entire life and most likely wont mentally age past like 4. It was a freak thing, but makes ya paranoid. If it makes you feel any more relieved, technically there have been a few survivors of rabies but its just incredibly rare

I’ve actually had some experience with both. I used to work for animal control and got bit by a feral cat. I had to go through all the rabies shots, since the cat got away. There were two shots in my hip that were extremely painful, although the rest of the shots were not that bad. The whole thing was very expensive, although my work covered the cost. I also survived septic shock. I was in a coma for a week and in the hospital for months. I thought I had a really bad flu, but I was actually septic shock. Fortunately my parents called, and when I wasn’t making any sense on the phone, they called 911. I had to have my leg amputated due to the medicines they had to use to save my life. The medications shunted all my blood to my vital organs, taking it from my extremities. Some sepsis survivors lose all four limbs. They determined it was most likely caused by a scratch from my cat. I was told I had a temperature of 106 and virtually no blood pressure when they got me in the ambulance. But besides rabies, the other thing that scares me the most is prion disease, like CJD. It’s another disease that ravages the brain.

Pretty sure I know where that's going unfortunately. Any sort of dementia sounds like absolute hell, it terrifies me.

I've got bitten by a stray cat that wondered into my garden last summer. It barely left a scratch, it was almost unnoticable. But I knew what the consequences could be, so even though my family laughted at my panic I went to the doctor and got directed to the epidemiological hospital immediately. Funnily enough even though I was stressed I didnt go to the hospital the next day after a visit because it was quite a long ride from my house and I dont have a car and I wanted to sleep in (yes, I put my life in danger just to get 2 more hours of sleep). But I went there at the second day after the visit and got prescribed a vaccine. You take it in 5 doses, each in first 3 days of the bite, 5 days from the bite, a week, two weeks and a month. It was pretty inconvinient to go there so often, but hey, I possibly got my life saved and also now I have 5 years of being pretty much untouchable by rabies virus. So moral of the story - if you ever get bitten, scratched or even just licked (the virus is in the saliva) by an animal that you don't 100% know is vaccined for rabies GO TO THE FUCKING HOSPITAL IMMEDIATLY. And if you are especially endagered for bites from wild animals because of your job or your hobby, get the preventional vaccine. In USA its probably very expensive, but in most of Europe its really affordable and could literally save your life.

She would have to be on top of the detail a lot better than her written submission which is filled with errors, including poor presentation. Saying she had the same coloured hair as the victims when they all had different coloured hair is a real read flag. She also repeats a couple of errors from the public record that police automatically know are probably false doesn’t help her case either, i.e. inferring the offender is a serial killer. Likewise the probable reference to an interstate disappearance in 1992, is highly unlikely to be the work of the offender, i.e. completely different m.o. Police interviewed her once and didn’t follow up. Given what she wrote, that’s no surprise.
