I ran my own construction crew for a couple decades: one thing I would love to see you guys do is just get a 5 gallon water jug and fill it up with ice everyday.. Make a mount on the wrecker so it's always there (you should have one on every vehicle honestly). But that way, you always have extra water with you-- it's always iced down. You can use it as coolant if something happens, etc. etc. I never went anywhere with my crew without having a full jug of water--- and any time I forgot to fill it, it was immediate regret after only a couple hours; even if we all had drinks. Having that water jug just boosts morale too. I'd love to see it integrated into your gear. It's hard to live without it once you have one there all the time: plus it's easier on your crew, so they don't have to keep buying drinks all the time and wasting their money. Free water FTW

I worked many years in Africa in the Sahara Desert. The Best Time to drive in the sand is around 4 AM after the sand has cooled down and is more compact. Once the Sun comes up and heats the sand, it is a whole different terrain. Running in 2 Wheel Drive sometimes works to if you can maintain a good speed. The Front Wheels act as a Packer. But once again, the sand has to be cool.

Yes! Absolutely want to see Paul, Rory, Casey, AND Merlin attempt the sand chute. Needs to be under the same circumstances as you guys. They all go down at the same time and have to get another car out that can't make it back out on it's own. On a side note, I really enjoyed watching both of these videos. It was cool to see you attempt something difficult that challenged you. Bring more of that!

AGREED temperature and time of day makes a huge difference when dealing with sand. This time of the year that changes fast in the winter the sand will be much much firmer and not bottomless like the dealt with on day one. Day two you can see the moisture in the sand as the tires dig in. It has to be dry and bottomless to be the same as their first day.

Not sure if you knew this but the best way to reset your Porsche and the faults that were causing issues is to close the doors and windows and lock it with the key for a minute. The faults will still be in the computers but the car will usually reset the safety stops that was causing your issues

HOW TO EASILY GET OUT OF DRY SAND: Next time, on a dry sand trail, just take a roll of wrapping paper and spread this paper on the trail where the tires will pass and the vehicle will run as if it were on concrete. In fact, always carry paper in your vehicle, as even if it is already "stuck" in the sand, it will come off easily. Suggestion from someone who has been riding on sand for 40 years.

A big part of the reason the Bronco did so well, is the modern automatic transmissions Ford uses have so many gear ratios, that are much closer together than anything GM had for a lot of years. They also shift significantly faster. The bronco is able to keep the rpms up higher and be in the optimal power range better than many other rigs today. Very impressive!

Hello Matt, just watching your videos on the sand trap show instantly took me to the Sherp videos of the ultimate off-road vehicle, where its tires can air down when needed and you don't need to get out and lock in for 4 x4😊. Everywhere you guy's went with the recovery vehicle's the Sherp can do and plenty of room to sit or just take your equipment. Great video as always. I'm quite sure we'd all like to see part 3 of this epic story coming to a screen near you. Also, I'm from Calgary Albert's Canada and we were traveling from Zion to Kanab on Labour day Monday. I took a chance and stopped in to Matt's yard. Matt's son was there minding the store (I picked up some T shirts) and we chatted for a short while. My timing couldn't have been better as Matt returned from a job with the wrecker. Even though I'm shure he would have preferred to go straight to lunch he opened the gate and spent some time showing us around and talking about the equipment and the channel. Also met Ed and Jamie when she arrived a short time later to go for that lunch. I can tell you that on his channel Matt comes across as a really nice, down to earth and caring guy and that's exactly who he is. Thanks so much for taking the time, it's much appreciated.

Absolutely Paul and Rory. These were two very good videos. Even the talk sitting at the desk today was an essential part of the adventure. You guys are such a good group with great comradary and are all skillful making videos another so long video with the entire group on this hill could be another good one. I would even take it a step farther, Paul willing. In addition to the wreckers it would also be interesting to see what his FJ would do, maybe even Mikes radical crawler could join in. It's crazy capable in the rocks and being light with big tires might be the wild card. Could make a big production out of the challenge. Of course your day with all your vehicles was made more interesting because of all the problems and work it it took over a long day to get back up it would be a spoiler if Paul and Rory just breezed up. But absolutely get them there and we all benifit by getting additional videos on their channels.

Matt, IDK if you'll see this comment on a video this old, but if the coolant level rises significantly at idle after being revved up, that indicates an air pocket somewhere in the cooling system, which could be affecting engine temperature negatively. Coolant, and liquids in general don't expand very much with temperature, but air does, the coolant level change after revving it up at 20:10 tells me that there is still an air pocket somewhere in the cooling system. If you haven't already, you should get one of those radiator funnels with the different radiator adapters and run the engine at 2-3k RPM until the thermostat opens (190-210F), with coolant filling about 1/3rd of the funnel above / outside the radiator cap. That allows the expansion needed and the flow required to properly burp the cooling system. And after that, you should take it for a test drive and get it nice and hot, let it cool down, and check the fluid level in the reservoir once it is completely cooled off / the next day. Then top it off to the cold fill line and then you should have eliminated all air pockets in the cooling system.

I went through a stage where my adventures tended to turn into fiascos so seeing the video of this happening to Matt I really felt how Matt must have been feeling. That said as someone watching from afar the whole thing seemed really heartwarming to me and makes me think how proud Matt must be of his friends. They had your back to whole time, that moment when Matt was realising how bad the situation was and Tom Tom came out with the joke about shelter and food was just the best example of him just lightening the mood and helping Matt cope. Plus Jefe's Bronco just being the dark horse out of nowhere, he must be so pleased with that car :) Anyway I'm rambling but I wanted to say as bad as this must have felt at the time in a couple of weeks the only things you will remember will all be positives and if you think about it there is a lot of positives things to learn from the whole thing.

Thanks for the honest way you share it through your channel, I for one have learned a lot from your endeavors. Look into The In deflate 4HOSE UNIT, it is based on the same design and functionality As the original in deflate, and allows you to equalize, inflate or deflate 4 tires at once. We use them here in South Africa to inflate or deflate 4 tires in one go.

I really loved when Matt said and I paraphrase that "the banana has more power than the Morvair even though the Morvair has an LS". Those straight 6s make great torque at low and mid RPM ranges they start to fall off at hi RPM making them more well suited to off road, V8s make more HP and torque at the HI RPM ranges, producing wheel spin. That was my fathers off road advice to me 40 some years ago. As you can tell I am a huge fan of Jeep 4.0 L its a rock solid tractor motor second only to the Ford Big Six.

You could easily see the effects of the heat, fatigue, and general exhaustion on everyone's ability and decision making during the first video. Glad you got the wrecker out. If Paul, Rory, and Casey want to get stuck at the bottom of the Sand Chute, I say let them and bring some hydration and popcorn because it should be a show.

Given the Wrecker was an unknown quantity with little prep for the sand chuter I think it did well. No matter what is done or adjusted during the building phase one can't cater for every eventuality, now you know the score a few tweaks and it will cope with everything.. Great video loved seeing the first one, and the second, and what a great job the Bronco did, but of course that was down to the driver and co pilot not the machine LOL. Great video looking forward to the more!! Good friends and wonderful family, I know it's wicked but as I am alone in the world bar one, I really envy the friend family situation. And look forward to the triple challenge, of Paul Rory and Casey. All of that said, I reckon Lizzy could have got the wrecker out on her own 😄😆.

The fan shroud should be 1st on your list of improvements. New right front tire should be 2nd and non plastic tubes for lockers 3rd. And getting getting Paul, Rory, and Casey together for a challenge would be really great. Casey may have issues with the loose rocks that he can't go around I think. Also thanks for the 4K. Videos are really sharp and colorful. Lastly, the format for this video was very clever. Lots of explanation and lots of video. It balanced well.

HELL YES! BRING ON THE OTHER "EXPERTS"! Also-I watched the first video with a friend of mine, he was a first timer. We were debating the possibility of the whole video being a set up yo add content. I was a firm "no way" but had to admit that there was a problem. Matt NEVER fail to lecture those he rescues from sand about airing down. He is consistent with his own vehicles; I was dumbfounded. Looking at how the tires performed it was obvious. I was yelling "WTF! Let out some air!" Between not bothering to fix the front tire-an issue that could have been avoided by having a spare(don't say there is no space on that monster!)-and not airing down-MATT you have lost the status of off road recovery and chassis creation KING! Hopefully the crown just slipped a little, because being just that far off your game can get your people hurt! 100+ degree kills just being in it. Four wheeling around Arizona the first thing I was taught-Always be ready for the worst. Spare fuel, and water, or we don't even leave the pavement. You make it look so easy i have to wonder..how many idiots will get hurt thinking they can just wing it, Like Matt.?

Hire two more FULL TIME mechanics! Frankly I enjoy your shop projects almost as much as the trail rescues...your channel is THE BEST on ANY media format...I do love how you don't embellish or attempt to create extra drama. You keep your stuff real...which is great except the real part about almost always having an excuse (explanation) about why stuff is broken and unmaintained. So I guess THAT is how YOU create drama...drive it 80 percent and hope it breaks so you have to fix it in "the wild". I am still eagerly awaiting the tandem axle potato truck project...using those giant military axles...

Mat, having run the big 46 inch Mickey's for over 10 years in the deep snow of BC'S Big mountains, you around be down too 3-4 psi in those tires, especially since the wrecker does not weigh that much. When I first got mine I had to run with the valve stems out for the first 2 days wheeling just to get the side walls soft enough to let the tire flex. After that my trail pressure is 5 psi and waist deep snow is 3 and bottomless is 2 in the rear and 2.5 in the front. Has never failed to get me out. LIVE TO SEE A SHOOT OUT ON SAND HILL. CHEERS Steve h.

That scuz that you're seeing in the cooling system might be a reaction with the Dexcool that that engine was likely running in it's original chassis. Dexcool turns into that brown sludgy residue when it's mixed with traditional glycol based coolants. It wouldn't hurt to fully flush and clean out the wrecker's cooling system.

The value of preparing for the unforeseen! When we went hiking in the mountains we always took what we needed plus 3 days worth of emergency food. Fill up water bottles at every opportunity. Three days is usually enough time for somebody to notice you are missing and to find you (not if you crash a plane in the Andes in the snow - that took about 3 months!).

Glad you got it out, and what I'd really like to see is a challenge with the Bombi towing the Banana up a dune, then the Morrvair, and then possibly the Wrecker, to see what kind of loads it can do. One thing though.... "We haven't even been neglecting the maintenance and repair; we literally haven't been able to fit it into the schedule." Well, I mean, that kinda is neglect. The Wrecker might be able to get by on smaller jobs without them, but after the Wreck had small issues in that muddy river job, fixing the lockers should have gone way up on the list of things to do.

18:48 I've been very surprised by river sizes in Britain. :) I grew up on the South Downs; they're chalk, very porous. I only really knew 2 rivers, the Arun and the Adur which are decent-size rivers, and some nameless irrigation ditches. I moved up to the Black Country south of Sheffield, to a house right next to a bridge. It wasn't the smallest bridge I've seen, but close. Walking into town, I saw more of the little stream which flowed under it. Then I looked on a map and saw it's a named river -- the Hipper! It's a lot narrower than the river at 18:48 . It got worse. I found the Rother which I've heard of before moving here. It's bigger, but still a bit smaller than what I thought a river should be. The Rother starts looking more like a proper river when the Hipper joins it, but apparently, even upstream from there it was big enough for "cuckoo boats" laden with 24 tons of coal. I guess it's a river then. And then it REALLY got worse! :) I got myself a bike and as my explorations extended, I found myself crossing this _tiny brook,_ barely larger than the smallest streams I've ever seen. I look on a map and it's called the River Doe Lea. This is another river I've heard of, one which was very important to Britain's industrial history! This is mud country, there's water everywhere and all of it is named! I'm guessing the weird naming is because there's so much water around that much use was made of it. Before the Industrial Revolution, Britain had too many watermills. The water was also very useful in the Industral Revolution itself -- this is where it started. But the different naming could also be due to conquest bringing a different language and people to this part of Britain. This is the Danelaw, conquored by the late Vikings. The Arun and the Adur are in old Anglo-Saxon country.
