Matt's Off Road Recovery

Matt's Off Road Recovery

3 жыл бұрын

So we got a call for a Chevy Silverado that was stuck on the top of Boulder Mountain.
The owner had slid off the road back in the fall of 2019
The truck came to rest in a very precarious position.
He was able to hike out to Highway 12.
He had one towing company go and look and four others that just refused.
The forest service was threatening to fine him if he didn't get it removed.
We were unfamiliar with the area and everybody we talked to made it sound like there's no way we would get it out, because of that we were a little apprehensive going in.
It was about 60 miles of rough dirt road, which was doable in a stock pick up.
About a block from the truck we got to the top of the mountain with some of the most amazing views on planet Earth.
This truck was down an extremely Steep and off-camber Trail and then off the side at about 45 degree angle.
Paul and Matt were able to get it rigged up and winched out of there.
It actually went rather easy.
Surprisingly the truck started and we were able to drive it out.

Hey Matt, I was the lead hiker with the goofy orange bandana in that backpacking group! Great to see the video up, we have been waiting for weeks. This video is the best advertisement for Matt's Off Road Recovery. 2 companies did not dare to do this recovery. This is just crazy seeing Paul and his son when he was still getting his channel up a running, no merch, and not even branding. Even Matt wasn't branded, but merely promoting his business. Just look at how far they have come! Was Paul's son, Landon filming for them? I saw him holding a microphone. Also, seeing this again, I noticed the shell of the Morrvair on the chassis in the background of a yard. Does Fab Rats have their own video of this?

That’s not too crazy. It’s not that the companies wouldn’t be able to get it out, it’s just that it’s not worth it. If it costs a company 8 hours to recover a truck (3 hours drive time one way, 6 total, and 2 hours to recover, I’m being generous), with a crew of 8 people at $30 an hour, that’s almost $2k in labor costs alone; add in overtime if the job takes longer than expected, easily $3k in labor. Add in fuel, equipment and over head and you’re looking at $4k in cost to recover a truck worth maybe $4k. Plus, if something happens and that truck, or worse, one of your trucks goes off the mountain, you’re insurance isn’t going to be happy. And god forbid something happens to one of the crew members. It’s risk vs. reward, those companies have to make money and try to keep people safe.

I've done heavy duty recoveries for many years and I noticed 3 major things that stood out. 1, you assessed the situation, came up with a plan reassessed, and modified your plan, listening to everyone's input. Awesome! 2, your rigging was done superbly. You were positioned to allow for as much movement as possible limiting re-rigging. Awesome job. 3, Most important, was safety. You kept everyone out of harm's way while continually assessing the situation as it progressed. That was a top notch recovery.

I only wish they wouldn't winch with chain and paid a little more heed to the steel rope under full load with no dampeners applied. Obviously, the dude that backed that XJ in has balls big enough to protect him from a snapped cable, but everyone else was in danger.

Couldn't agree more!! Superb teamwork, making sure everyone was safe including keeping the camera crew away from the winch cables in case they snapped, first rate work from everyone. So not quite the same but just as dangerous to removal people. We had a boulder take out a set of wooden 'H' poles fore 250 KVA power lines, half way up one of the cliffs you see to the north of Parachute CO. No getting anything up there motorized until after poles and lines were removed. Our powerline people we contracted came in with a helicopter and the safety guy asked 'what's your plan?' Big Mike said, 'We go up assess, discuss plan and rehash all the what if's. If there are questions that can't be answered we start a new plan. Then we vote on the plan and if all 7 of us don't agree we start a new plan. If there are problems or unexpected results during the plan we start over from where we are at.' All went well with a few rehashes as they went. Spectacular to watch from the setting they were in and even more so from their strategy. Matt's crew did a solid job. I am sure they will take suggestions into consideration on future ones. Keep er safe, everyone should always go home in one piece!

Out by myself, and trail gave way under me (my 2 front tires and the trailer hitch is all that kept me up!), and no place to turn around (MUCH thinner than that road), and had to creep past a big rock in the road, hugging a cliffside. There was no going backwards around that without going over. I was stuck... Recovery guy said a hummer made it back there too (WHAAAAT???), and broke an axle trying to get turned around and get out. They dragged that one, ruining the back end. That was an expensive repair, and they had to call a specialist in LA to explain how to "unlock" the back axle. Glad to hear your dad made it out okay!

Man I'm jealous. 50 years ago I was a commercial deep sea diver working out of Louisiana in the Gulf oilfields. Much of my occupation involved underwater rigging to set clamps on platforms and to install subsea valve assemblies connecting pipelines. My rigging imagination was going full speed for this video, and I dare say that my thoughts at the start closely paralleled what the final plan was. What a tremendous team all these guys are. No egos trying to steal the spotlight, which was often a problem when working offshore.

This video is more than a year old but the best educated session I experienced! That was indeed a VERY difficult recovery! I still wonder how you would have done the recovery with no trees and no vehicle at the top! Well filmed and presented and I love that yellow monster!
