@@Bablobiggins No, the F40 was born from a rally project of the 288 GTO that never took part because Group B was over and Ing. Nicola Materazzi focused on functionality alone, the F50 was an F1 car for the road and was built like it and even had the N/A V12 derived from the 640 F1 (and not a TTV8 that changed the brand of the turbines from the ones used in F1 by going for IHI instead of KKK because the former were better as admitted by KKK themselves when they were invited in Fiorano and were given two data sheets that didn't specify what turbines the two F40 had), the F40 chassis was made of steel and kevlar while the F50 one was made with carbonfibre, fiberglass body for the F40 and carbonfibre for the F50, some F40s even had sliding lexan windows, finally Pietro Camardella could spend more time on the design instead of following Ing. Materazzi; the only thing in common is that they were the top of the line 8 years apart and the surname of the ones who wanted them, Enzo and Piero Ferrari, if the F50 was just a redesigned F40 then it wouldn't beat the F40 by 2.6s in less than 3 km.

@amjan3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I think he made the typical mistake of such renditions - he took a compact, coherent design and added a bunch of stuff to it without taking anything off. You can't just add, you have to subtract as well. For example, he connected the side air inlets into this one huge entity, where the two inlets flow with each other, but don't flow with the car at all, and become a huge, prominent entity that looks like a new added thing that only weighs on the design.The high rear wing is an eye-sore as well.
@Pickle-oh3 жыл бұрын
He took a bumper that was absolutely brilliantly simple, almost elegant in how rude it is, and just conformed it. That tripoint where the bumper meets the far corner of the headlights is what makes this car imo, it makes the car boxy. Cutting that tripoint out of the car completely destroys the design, the entire design collapses.

One element you didn't discuss (but I think you've retained) is the black locking latches for both rear and front hood/bonnet. An absolute must-keep, more than simply functional I'd go so far as to say they are one of the iconic elements of the F40. Throughout my childhood a 1:18 BBurago F40 was on display in my bedroom. But it wasn't a hands-off model, and the working (now thoroughly worn and twisted) latches added some process, some exploration and some theatre to opening and displaying the innards. If I owned the real thing, I'm certain that operating these latches would bring me inexplicable degrees of joy! I'd probably wear out the full-size versions too, but I'd have the means to specify them as a replacement part in each service.

Thank you Frank for the video. I have a huge appreciation for what you have done here with the F40 design. It is certainly a compelling re-imagination of the vehicle. My critique is that the original F40 design had a rawness in its simplicity. It was a bare bones, no nonsense, minimalistic experience. This new design emphasizes the performance of the car, but you lose some of that raw personality. Specifically the styling around some of the vents, wing mirrors, and rear wing makes the car a bit delicate. Maybe this is too bold to say but this design concept almost feels like it would be better applied to the F50, whose natural personality is a bit more muscular and emotive.

She turned me into an ideas man who has made enough money that I don't care if my road safety ideas make me a dime. But I have been inspired by the death of a young motorcyclist I cradled in my arms to have 57 road safety ideas. The best is like the FAST acronym that works in all English speaking countries. But it works like a rev counter in a car that starts at lower age revs. This could save more lives than FAST has. He was 22. If you like my comment you can have all my ideas, because I love the Fiat 500. Ideas are simple. They are inspired by childhood. Kind Regards Howard Lake

I love these videos though. Not many people work in design so don’t know the value of a true designer speaking. So here's the truth. I was born in 88, and the F40 never captured my heart the way the F50, Diablo and Mclaren F1 did. Perhaps it's a childhood bias acting on me, but I'd argue by pointing out that one of my favorite looking cars of all time is the 250 GT Lusso, which I'd never even known existed when I was a kid. Frank, your redesign seems amazing, but it doesn't light my fire either. So have I lost the comment competition yet? Anyway, I find that at the root of all my car design fantasies is motion. Once I have experienced a car in motion, a memory is stored. A memory not limited to vision, but rather a memory that binds together sight, sound, smell, touch and emotion. From the weather, the excitement of vacation or car show, the smell of exhaust and warm tires, to the way the shape of the car interacted with it's surroundings as it moved. I'd love to see your drawing brought to fruition, so I could experience it in this 4 dimensional context. I admire your work (the P1 being in my top 5), and I'm very excited to have found your channel through my subscription to Harry's Garage. Can't wait for more vids. I'd love for you to consider a look at the 550 Maranello in a future video.

I called myself reading through all the comments, but didn't see a comment on this detail, so apologies if this has been mentioned already. In the side view, I completely agree with you that the 2 original ducts are disjointed and have no real visual relationship with each other. I like how you've brought them together, visually, by having the large end of the ducts form a continuous curve up towards the C pillar. My only issue is that the curve stops there and the C pillar is on a different angle. I feel like if you had curved the C pillar such that it continued the curve of the ducts, it would have been a more cohesive design. Really liked other aspects like the large central NACA duct on the hood coming out of the badge, and the doors are really nice as well. Thanks for sharing! Eric

I've always loved the F40 for its simplicity and boxiness. It's actually my favorite car that Ferrari has ever manufactured. In my head it's like one of those old dogs that if you were to pull up next to a modern supercar the people around wouldn't think you could keep up just based on looks, then you inevitably speed past them. At the beginning of the video, I was really quite skeptical because I got a peek at that nose and was legitimately scared. It gave off really hard 4th gen Camaro vibes which is a far cry from the F40 for sure, and I really didn't think it could work in a million years, but man you are an absolute wizard. After your explanation and a couple minutes of looking at your rendering, I might actually prefer the F40.2 as Metcalf put it. I don't think another person could have pulled off such a perfect modern reimagining as this. Really, thank you for these redesigns, I've enjoyed learning more about what goes into the process of designing a car.

When I saw an F40 in person, having already fallen in love with it in photos, I was struck with the fact that in person it was more "curvy" than what is conveyed in photos. That curviness made the design more "of a piece" than it was in photos. It looked like a beautiful symmetrical curve from tire to tire, starting high at the rear and flowing gracefully over the cockpit and down to the road in front, and I didn't want to change a thing.

It takes some Kahoona’s to rework a great design, I was looking forward to being impressed, and was not disappointed. The F40 stands alone, it deserves it place in Ferrari’s great cars and timeline and your update is great in that it keeps the soul of F40. Of course nothing beats the original, but if they wanted to update the F-40 (as in evolution) you have given them a good, if not great place to end up. Super job there Frank. I like all of the updates including the over the top doors and I think I could even get used to the second wing element. But no one seems to pointing out the elephant in the room; your obvious choice of the greatest pen ever made to do your sketching. The Bic pen is at the same time ubiquitous and remarkable, and in your hands transformed into an artist’s tool. I loved the way Frank used design features reminiscent of italian design, still preserving it's form and utility as well as improving aerodynamic shapes. We can actually see from this sketch, the first clues to how the LaFerrari would arise to it's final form. Finally, it strikes me how car design becomes art in a way that people feel inspired just by imagining what the experience and raw felling of sitting at the wheel of this machines would be like, but also for the simple visual cues that become a synesthesia of wind, vibrations, sounds and smells. That's a thing we don't have in modern day cars and people don't realize that the raw experience is losing path for the lazy side of humans, with our tendency of making everything easier about cars, how they handle, how they turn. This is a dream car garage and enthusiast content! Thank you so much!

Hello Frank! I am enjoying watching your videos so much. As for probably most people, the F40 is the car that immediately pops into my head, when I hear the word Ferrari. It has such a classic purity to it and I always thought it embodies that perfectly in its design. However, this video made me rethink everything. Your interpretation of this car is simply astonishing. You have this car an elegance that it absolutely deserves. The design shows the character of maybe THE supercar of all time. Thank you! My favourite detail is the single big air intake on the bonnet that connects to the Ferrari logo. It is a perfect little detail that means so much. I am so happy to stumble across your channel months back. My whole life I loved looking at cars and feel their emotions. There are so many channels that focus on the crazy numbers and technical aspects of cars and while I adore all of that, it is simply a dream of mine to see someone with as much experience as you talk about the design of these legends. The design is probably the most important thing about cars and it is wonderful how you connect your knowledge with the history of these cars and you teach me so much. Thanks! It would be wonderful to see your opinion on the Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale which you mentioned briefly in this video. Please keep up your amazing content!

The first thing I'd like to say is - I really enjoy watching your videos, Frank. I'm a digital modeler in the automotive industry and your content helps me understand my job more. Keep it coming! Now my views regarding this one. I loved the tweaks you added to the E-Type. I can't say the same in this case, I'm afraid, but I respect your point of view. The front of the car became too short almost "crooked" I would say. Like a man with a small, curved nose. I understand the grill change - it's more Ferraresqueisch, but I don't like the shape of it. It looks like the car is smiling - I preferred the previous, more serious, face. F40 knows it's fast, the original face is more confident but this one gets me feeling like it wanna prove something. I love the new position of mirrors but again I would go for a more classic, not futuristic, shape. The last thing that I don't like is the spoiler. The additional part is looking like it's hanging from the main part. It gives me a feeling of instability. I would connect it to the side pillars of the spoiler, just to make it double. Other than that, I love the rest. New shapes, the curvature of the bonnet, new vent holes, the new door/side design is more futuristic - that's a yes from me. PS. I hope some BMW is on your list. ;) edit: I must add one more thing. I wrote this comment when you showed the drawing before you explained your new design. I thought that my opinion would be more honest when I come to the conclusions myself. But then when you started talking I have liked the design more with every word. You are a magnificent seller, Frank. :DD That's another attribute of a great designer I suppose.
@gold3334 жыл бұрын
I disagree. The original design (esp. the front) is on the goofy side of brutal minimalism. Frank’s design is on the beserk side. Which is what this car was. He accentuated the berserkness. Although for some reason Frank’s design makes me think 1990-1995 design language, not 1985-1990. To be honest Frank’s design could be made more minimalistic by removing the grid in the front grille and getting rid of the rear most intake and canard on the lower front bumper and just making it a flat surface like the original. Also getting rid of the sculpted intakes right above the popup headlights.

P1 (front wheelwell vent / side NACA duct rearrangement), MC12 (barge plate), Cossie (double wing), F430 (front bumper side vent), with some great hommage / nods (33 Stradale doors, 250 GTO rear bumper side vents, 166 / 212 / 250 grille etc.) The new design has the key elements of the F40, but more importantly is instantly recognisable as a work from Mr. Stephenson. Bravo!

Why have youtube taken so long to serve me up this channel? I understand how some people prefer the original, and to an extent I share their horror at "messing with a classic", however, I can also see that the F40 is very definitely "of its time". It's fantastic to watch an artist at work, even the way the beautifully rendered F40 sign behind it just kisses the A pillar rather than sitting clear in the space where I would've expected it adds drama. Gods I wish I could draw 🙂

My god! This channel is pure air! I just realized that you've designed some of the car that I loved so much during the years. And they all have I thing in common. They're aging really well! I've recently bought a 1st gen Bini (Mini - BMW) cooper convertible and I'm in love! Such an amazing and timeless design! Thanks for this pearl. I think I still prefer the original design of the F40 BUT only because it's an icon that we all know for 30 years. I think it might be interesting a re-design of the latest Ferraris such as the SF90 or the F8. Grazie mille! Fantastico lavoro!

Lovely production of the video, with that music and composition it make me smile and really immerse on the 80's!!. The design it's awesome. Just the slight enough touches to make the design modern and distinctive but maintaining the greatness and raw of the F40. That front, it reminds me of the Roma grille, it fits perfectly that slightly "pointy" design. I love seen that Saab motive in a designer of "form follows function", I have this in my heart. What always amaze me looking how designers works on drawing it's how they show the perspective 3d view, with shadows, shapes, etc... by just painting different colors, the whites, corners, etc... it always amaze me how is it done. I will love seen experiences and details on how designers interacts with engineer finding solutions and adapt the design to meet that "form follows function" idea. nice detail those blue wheel center cap with all that red around, interesting touch. un saludo enorme Frank!

I have seen 1 f40 in my life. I was on a bike ride this summer, there was a Ferrari day at silverstone and i had already been passed by 4 SP2 Monzas, 812 speedsters and a whole host of other cars. But then i wash going up a hill about 25 miles in, fully knackered, and behind me i heard a pop. I took a glance over my shoulder and was like ooh another ferarri, i then thought ‘no fucking way, is that an f40’ and as i turned once more it downshifted, and floored it. Since i was on my own i just let out a shout of excitement and inhaled the fumes it left in its wake and powered up the rest of the hill. It was incredible, even though i saw much louder and rarer cars that day the f40 stands out to me as the best car i have ever seen. Heading to goodwood this year so I hope to see a few more along with some of the old 250 series cars and much more

To me the double rear wing should been extended all the way, sure it would have been a bit "less" but also easier to digest. And I'm also not sure about the ridge that goes around the corner and crosses the air outlet, in front of the wheel. Other than that great ! Many new cars today have to much unneeded elements, the old F40 only had what it needed, that's a beauty in itself. Same with Motorcycles, most of them tend to look really weird these days. Look at a Ducati Panigale and the iconic 916, I'd tell you which I like :) About the video, splendid ! Especially the -80s touch video montage of you sketching in Harry's garage, top notch man !

You know, I think Frank did a really good job preparing us for what was going to happen on this design. I like that he said up front he loves the design, that he respects it, but that he wanted to be more vulgar with it. If that was the goal, then job well-done, I can't dispute you there (and I mean that in the best way). I do love the new mirrors, the fender vents (front and rear) and the wing changes (though if we were actually going to build this thing I'd question how much downforce the wing can withstand with no central support). And yes, get rid of the mesh. This isn't just a Ferrari, it's an 80s Ferrari, it should be patently, obviously, dangerous. Of course, I'm still conflicted about the design. The F40 gives me nostalgia for a time when I wasn't even born yet and it feels like the F40 is the perfect product of its time. If I'm not mistaken, the F40 was one of the first cars built with carbon composites. Not just one of the first road cars, but first cars period. And I think that's why there's a simplicity to the shapes and curves, it was just a limitation of what could be done with this new material at that time. And I think that's why you don't see cars that look like an F40 coming out these days, the fact is we CAN do better now, so we do. We have more shapely ducts and vents, and smoother, more rounded lines, because that's much more doable today. So I don't think we'll ever see something like an F40 roll out of a factory new again because it is so much a product of its time. And I miss that, the same way I miss 90s house music (though I make my own modern take on that too) and 80s F1 and 70s rock albums, because the market has just moved beyond that. But that's neither here nor there, point is, I love the original and feel for it as a product of it's time in a way that I wouldn't be able to feel about a "new F40" for many years. But then, Ferrari doesn't make new F40s, they made F50s and Enzos and LaFerraris instead. It's almost like they know how to manage a brand or something.... But that's on me, and again, Frank, you were very good up front about saying what you were going to do to the car, and I can understand why you did all those things. I'm not in love with the front end (as some others have noted, I thought "Camaro" right away, so not really driving the Ferrari identity home), but other than that it feels pretty good.

The front grills gives more motion, it is no doubt was missing from the earlier design. Gal wings actually suits it giving it more drama, however I am not completely agree with the rear wings. Just a suggestion please make a connection of this little fella to his parents hands a little bit more, not just hanging but actually connected both ends. Rear ducts and front duct connection is amazing, giving it a harmonic look. Good to see the overall redesign, just love it. Those rear view mirror is now actually more aesthetically beautiful. And yes that Vulgar is there! Top job..

Hi Frank, I really love your channel. I‘m watching your videos since day one. As a kid, I always wanted to design cars and what the E-Type is for you, the Porsche 993 is for me. I just wanted to say thanks for taking us into your head and your ideas. It’s so inspiring and touches the aesthetic and design loving part in me. I also appreciate the evolution of the quality of your videos (the turning logo „franks dream garage“ in the garage of the e-type was a little off though ;) ). The 80‘s synth music in this vid totally suits the era of the F40 and I also really like the little funny takes, that give your videos a nice personal touch. All in all, your channel evolves quickly in a very nice direction. Keep up the good work with your team and keep coming collaborations like Harry‘s Garage. I rarely comment any videos but I just wanted to let you know, how nice your channel is and say thanks :)

I think the F40 is one of those designs that is perfection, I love the aggression and rawness which is then balanced with a more subdued face, I also think those F40 Speedlines are one of the nicest wheels ever designed (along with the F1 GTR O.Zs). Proposed design for me looks like there is too much going on, adding the more considered grill to the front loses some of that rawness that the F40 exudes and not a fan of that big naca scoop, the two smaller ones on the original read to me like neat brush strokes and break up the bonnet just enough whilst retaining that strong profile. It’s great to see a different interpretation of such a legendary design and hear the arguments for it, really makes one reflect back on what makes a design so iconic, really loving the channel, very excited to see the next video!! Massive thanks!

Frank - first of all I wish you to stay healthy throughout those scary times. Secondly, I would like to thank you for creating one of my two favourite cars, which is Ford Escort Cosworth. It has been my dream to own one for years, I think the overall silhoutte is just perfect for this kind of car. Your F40 design reminded me instantly of your original Cossie design with multiple rear wings (which sadly did not make it to production), that had been proved to improve the aero characteristics of the car. I really like your redesigned F40, you managed to keep the spirit of the original car while making those enhancements to the overall shape of the car that made it somewhat modern-ish. I would love to see you redesigning Porsche 911 4S (993), which is my second favourite car of all time. Wish you all the best! Pat

This sort of "stepped wing" design is called "winggrids" and it really works. I've had an oportunity to check it in real life, flying big RC weightlifting prototype planes, and I can tell you that when designed properly it may very efficiently increase lift (downforce in this case) without creating too much drag. I love that pointy nose, even though it does look a little bit like GM product from 90-00. The original F40 nose is just dull and looks purely functional.

Frank, if you are reading this, would you mind making a video about the tools (pen, coloring, etc) you use and basic drawing tips? Loving the Dream Garage series Frank, there's something magic about hand-rendered car designs that I miss from the ubiquitous Photoshopped ones. Only two things I'd consider changing from your otherwise fantastic F40 redesign: 1. Make the front grille wider, and less of a chevron shape. If it were to expand out to where the first vents are, so that it flicks up and leads into the headlights, I feel that would have a lower, wider, more intimidating look befitting the personality of the car. 2. Keep the NACA ducts more geometric. I love the brutal straight lines of the original which you have largely maintained, so keeping the trailing edge of the side NACA ducts more square would suit the rest of the vehicle to me. Keep those design challenges coming!

Thanks for the content, this is by far my favorite automotive youtube channel. I absolutely love the swept back line below the A-pillar (that was 90 degrees on the original). I could do without the double-wing and would prefer improving rear-downforce with an improved rear-diffuser. I just absolutely love the F-40 wing in its current state too much to change it. I first watched the video comparing the F-40 and the Countach. I always thought of Ferrari and Lamborghini embodying the epitome of feminine and masculine traits. I see Ferrari as having sensual feminine curves, while Lamborghini always went for an aggressive, sharp, masculine look. I know they're not cars, but growing up across the river from Manhattan, it reminds me of the masculinity of the Empire State Building opposed to the feminine lines of the Chrysler Building. I love them both, just in different ways. Anyway, thanks again. Next video, please do the Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale you mentioned in the video (which I coincidentally suggested in the E-Type video).

I had to spend some time looking at Frank’s redesign to really understand it. In my opinion (and I gotta say, I’m no car designer, but I love cars), simple, almost primitive shapes, flat surfaces and right angles are what give the F40 its character - that raw, analogue supercar feel. The elements Frank changed/added to the car appear great when you look just at them, but feel alien alongside the original’s body panels. I would love to see his vision of a completely new, modern F40, similar to how Gordon Murray’s T50 is a spiritual successor to the F1.

Very pretty but, despite not being a car designer but a driver and aspiring collector, there are three things that i would have done differently: - i would have done the vent behind the front wheel with a triangular section so that it meets the A pillar at the top and remains wide at the side skirt level, - the front grill looks too much like the front grill of the new NSX so i would have done the sides a bit sharper and maybe pointier, - i would have done the secondary spoiler full width as i don't like mummy spoiler holding baby spoiler ... And my gut feeling is that it is also probably more aerodynamically efficient to leave the underside of the larger spoiler untouched as it is the most important surface of the spoiler in terms of downforce.
