Yeah. That didn't make sense. The reactor is supposed to be produce plasma and exotic particles that are used to create a warp field, power the ship, and be expelled from the back of the ship to produce thrust. Why was there so much water? In fact, why was there any water? The reactors are designed to run at thousands of degrees and need to maintain high heat so they aren't water cooled. Why were the pipes designed around an elaborate maze rather than simply being short straight pipes? Why were some pieces transparent and others opaque?

Star Wars (I'm speaking strictly of the OT) did explain how most of it's tech worked without spelling it out. The Falcon traveling through hyperspace looks like a vortex, so I'd say it's likely any ship hyperspace capable opens a wormhole. The Death Stars were powered by main reactors, and given their massive size it's reasonable to assume they were powered by matter/anti-matter reactors. A nuclear reactor would never be able to generate that kind of power, and there's really no other energy production method that requires a reactor core. Plus, no known element in the universe could produce *_more_* power than a matter/anti-matter reaction. In _Return of the Jedi,_ the Death Star II's energy shield is projected by a large dish installation on Endor, and during the scene where the strike team gets captured in the control room, we clearly see what looks like a massive power station in the background. Not to put too fine a point on it, but if you look into the SW Technical Manuals, there actually is in-depth explanations on how SW tech works. It just wasn't described in the films because as Plinkett points out, it wasn't important; it wasn't essential to the plot that we know how lightsabers _work._ But we did have to know that the Death Stars had reactor cores, because the assaults in ANH & ROTJ hinged on the destruction of the cores.

Plinkett's right. Eventually people will get tired of the power inflation, and all of these franchises will burn out. Star Trek, Marvel, etc. When everything is "bigger," "badder," "darker" eventually it hits a wall and has no where to go. It's like the modern economy. Sell all assets the company owns today to increase profit margins and impress investors, watch the stock go up, cash out, and watch it all burn up the next day.

+Dialectical Monist Agreed! And the sooner the better. I'm so fed up with Star Trek, Star Wars, Comic reboots and other Super hero schlock. Depends what you mean by "comic book movie" - if you're including the likes of, say, The Crow, Road to Perdition, Scott Pilgrim, American Splendor and Howard the Duck, then, yeah, Hollywood will, in some way, continue to mine comic books for ideas in exactly the same way they mine every other form of media, for as long as there's a Hollywood. If you specifically mean superhero movies - their time will pass, like it does for every fad once you've reached saturation point and the audience gets sick of them. Look at action movies at the end of the 80s - they went from box office gold to passe in a couple of years.

Both Trek films were essentially extended auditions for Abrams. He's the perfect director for explosions, lightsabres and bad guys who helpfully wear black and colour their weapons so you know exactly who they are. He was a terrible choice for Trek, that needs actual thought and actual research.
@jessevb
@jessevb 8 жыл бұрын
I don't think that's exactly fair to J.J, he does a LOT of research for the stuff, it's just the research he does is mostly aesthetic, which is why he's more suited to Star Wars than Trek. Honestly I would have liked to see his take on a Pegg script since I think the scripts were bigger issues in Trek. For the most part I really liked his vision of the Trek universe, I just think that Into Darkness needed to understand that after the first movie it needed to move beyond (no put intended) references. With that said I don't know how much control the director has over the script especially with a big studio involved?

You know, I feel like Plinkett really makes a great point about J.J. here. I feel like those two Star Trek films are basically Star Wars movies in the Star Trek galaxy. The interesting thing, though, is that the Star Wars prequels feel like Star Trek movies in the Star Wars galaxy! It went after the politics, the deep stuff, but it ended up being kinda confusing and it didn't work in the Star Wars franchise. But I feel like it could've worked in Star Trek if they used those plots and just tweaked them to a different universe. Trust me, Rick Berman couldn't get better performances out of people either. Some of the actors on all of the series were laughably bad.

I do have the feeling too George Lucas tried to make the Phantom menace more like a harder science fiction/Star trek film - space diplomacy and politics, viewscreens, slower pace, scientifically/materialistically explaining the Force, some direct references like the presence of a Federation and Nemoidians or whatever those running the Trade Federation are called (according to some comments possibly named after Leonard Nimoy).

The nuTrek movies ran out of steam and while technically there's two shows, they're both garbage as Trek (and ehhhhhh as generic sci-fi adventure schlock). What's the point of excusing these things as necessary for "resurrecting" a franchise when what they're actually doing is putting its label onto something completely unrelated in every aspect but the superficial? Might as well "resurrect" Star Trek as a celebrity travel show or something, for that mass appeal.

The whole thing about the turbolift ride being so short in the Fake Trek version is because abrams has no time for slow introspection, he has to hurry, hurry, HURRY to get characters to their next scene where they have to go running screaming through corridors. If a turblolift ride took 30 seconds instead of 5 seconds, that would be 25 seconds of frantic people running screaming through corridors that he'd have to cut out of his terrible movie.

Thing is, in Star Trek there are no villains, only different people. While the Klingons were the enemies of the federation, they weren't inherently evil. The Borg were just doing what they were programmed to do. The Cardassians were starving and running out of resources and the Dominion felt threatened by the Alpha Quadrant. You could argue that the Romulans are evil, but they are just completely different to the federation.

***** First off, don't insult me, second off: pressing shift+4 brings me to the "not gay" discussion, which has nothing to do with the issue at hand, unless you are making another veiled attempt to insult me. Thirdly, my issue with the JJ Abrams reboot stems from the fact that they are insistently made into fairly thoughtless action films. The first film pulled it off okay, if only by virtue of a well-developed cast. Into Darkness was garbage on every level. It would be a bad film regardless of its relationship to the Star Trek franchise, and the next film down the line is likely to be far worse.

+Joseph Glatz He addresses this at length in the part 1 video of this review, and I see his point but I do miss the more story-drive "boring" Star Trek, but having said that maybe the Star Trek I miss is better suited for TV especially today where in the past decade or so cable has really nailed it. I have liked lots of these shows with deep story arcs where each season tells a story and each season weaves together (I guess it's the Buffy format). The biggest problem with TNG was the fact that everything was so stand-alone and there were no major ongoing story arcs. DS9 definitely had loads of ongoing arcs, but they weren't neatly designed to fit into each season (in other words I can't recall what each season was about like I can with Buffy, Dexter, Walking Dead, Once Upon a Time, etc). I think the Star Trek we're thinking of would work great in this now commonplace style on TV.

***** Voyager had some arcs, but they were poorly implemented and the show largely came off like TNG with its stand-alone episode design. For example, that whole storyline involving the disaster where Voyager was trapped under ice from the use of an experimental engine (where Harry and Chakotay used time travel to fix it) should have been a season-long story arc but instead we suddenly see that they built this thing in this episode and it's never mentioned again. There was also an episode where Voyager encountered a planet where time ran fast compared to the universe, the doctor beamed down, and lived there for what was about 7 years in their time. In the next episode the Doctor became a singing celebrity on another alien world and considered moving there by contradicting the previous episode's storyline because he stated that Voyager was the only life he'd ever known. That being said I'm not sure I'd say TNG is really better or not. It's definitely better from a historic perspective since it successfully relaunched a sci-fi franchise and brought a number of new characters into common knowledge (people recognize Data even if they've never watched an episode), but I liked how Voyager largely operated under the rules this fictional universe operates under (yea I know they got sloppy) and that was largely developed by TNG. Also DS9 launched a couple months after I became a Star Trek fan so, for me at least, DS9 and Voyager were the shows I watched in "real time" so that made them more special to me and gave them a bigger impact for me because TNG was basically available anytime in syndication.

After becoming hooked on shows post-Voyager like Lost, Dexter, Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul, and the Walking Dead I wonder if I would like Voyager today as much as I did back in its day. The characters were bland I guess but the main problem was that the writers never put them at risk. The only major character to leave was Kes, and having a 9 year lifespan she could have been a fascinating character to watch grow and die. DS9 had a narrative closest to what those other shows have because episodes mattered, and desperately needs to be watched in the proper order. In fact the space station was even taken by the enemy and remained in its control for maybe half a season or so. I admit it was slow for the first couple seasons and dealt a lot with Bajorian politics, but if you are a Star Trek fan you owe it to yourself to watch that one through until the end. Star Trek Enterprise had me excited, and had so much potential, but it fell back to independent stories that were stale and predictable. Instead of focusing on the obvious narrative of the founding of the Federation and things mentioned from the past like the Earth / Romulan conflict we had... crap. Then they got their act together and came up with this long story arc about... an alien federation we never see again. I loved how they were establishing Star Trek tech and I loved things like the Andorian / Vulcan tension (this was the only Trek that actually seemed like it was taking place in space), and it had a great cast but they just botched everything. It was so dull, predictable, and NOT RELEVANT to the canon!

Ah. In any case if the moment strikes you someday and you get the urge to binge on Star Trek from Netflix or something then start out DS9. Watch the pilot and then skip to about the last 4 episodes or so from the end of Season 2. That's probably around when the major storyline element of that series starts up.

I agree with you about every point you've made about every Star Trek series and movies EXCEPT the Dominion War of DS9. I still think it was an amazing story-arc and the CGI battles, in my opinion, didn't make the Alpha Quadrant ships seem less durable by any means or cheapen how combat was supposed to be rare in Star Trek, but simply showed the overwhelming firepower and zealous nature of the enemy the Federation was facing. The Dominion War story was all about the militarization of the Federation when faced with a new and overwhelming enemy and how that militarization clashed with the peaceful and explorative nature that the Federation was founded upon. And it was done in a good way unlike Voyager which was just Captain Janeways adventure in genocide, murder and the violation of every single rule the Federation was founded upon. It's like when the Borg was first introduced and they just wipe the floor with the Enterprise. Did that make the Enterprise seem any less weak? No, it just made the enemy seem so superior. Now yeah, you can argue that the Dominion was just the Borg of Deep Space 9 as all Star Trek series need a main antagonist race, and I'd agree, but that didn't make it any less interesting in my opinion. Also, a lot of the ship combat where ships were getting one shot and shit was when they were attacking orbital defenses. In the massive battles we got in DS9, MOST of the ships you saw get one shot were usually either ganged up on by multiple ships or getting targeted by one big ship.

it's an interesting point Mike makes about the Dominion War being a way that action was cheapened. I felt like in the context of DS9 the build up was pretty well done, but I can understand how from that point on, you were able to see how the ships were not as menacing as they once were. I've had this idea for a while that TNG and DS9 are sibling shows. DS9 had a lot of the same writing team that TNG had, and in many ways DS9 is a sequel to TNG and takes a lot of TNG ideas and builds on them. So maybe you could say that seeing Warbirds and BoPs being destroyed is the years long payoff of what was started in TNG. One other note on this, but if you remember the season 2 finale of DS9, the Odyssey is a galaxy class starship destroyed by the dominion. the showrunners included this to highlight how menacing the dominion was, and I wonder if that was the reasoning for showing the destruction of following ships in the war.

What I get from this is that they concentrated on character creation and visuals at the expense of the plot. Which is precisely the right move for a quick buck. Why would I want to own this on blue-ray ? Or review it periodically, like I do with Star Wars or Lord of The Rings ? Nothing really, seen it once, simple, linear plot, great characters. DONE. The plot is what keeps me coming back to a movie or series, is the thing that creates longevity and timeless status. Nobody's gonna remember Star Trek 2009, only for being a quick pop movie with a lot of lens flares. Too bad nowadays generation of filmmakers don't understand that.

Yeah, the one thing that bothered me about this movie was that the supernova was several light-years away. The fastest the energy from the explosion could travel is the speed of light. And the Romulan empire has many FTL space ships. You would think at least one out on patrol, or traveling around the empire would've seen that the star went supernova. They would've then hauled ass back to Romulus and said"Hey, big energy wave heading this way! We have four years to evacuate!"

No, a view screen as apposed to a window is advantageous because windows tend to be a lot more flimsy than the material of the ship's hull. They'd make for a nasty weak point. Shoot it, and the command crew is killed instantly, and you win the fight. Then again, if I were a designer in star fleet, I'd bury the bridge inside the hull to make sure it has the best protection possible.

But what if God's plan required your interference? Maybe the reason why we are all sentient is so that we DO help each other. The Prime Directive isn't really about non interference, it is about furthering Starfleet's goals. They can help any ally without being asked, but if you aren't an ally then they will refuse until you pledge yourself to Starfleet because of the "Prime Directive". The Prime Directive is garbage.

25:09 Joining the spirit of nitpicking, if the romulan sun exploded it wouldn't have taken a millisecond because the supernova gases usually move at around 1/10 light-speed and for the star to go supernova it would have to have a mass of at least 9 solar masses, giving it a habitable zone and therefore Romulus' orbital distance of a touch under 47 AU, so it would take 10 * 8 minutes * 47 AU or almost **sixty-three hours** to reach the planet, presumably giving time for the vulcan ship thingy to get to the system. I think the Dominion War was the high point of all of Trek. It was a distinct parallel to the original series in that human nature perseveres despite the difficulty, but instead of culture clash, it was war on an unprecedented scale. The human element was revived in the wake of the cold, scientific, and dramatic storytelling of TNG and Voyager which began the year before.
