The only people who've been able to properly execute the shared universe concept are the people who pioneered the idea: Marvel. WB and Universal have demonstrated that just having a shared universe isn't a recipe for success. The problem is that Hollywood often misinterprets success. They see the MCU and think, "Oh, this is successful because it's a shared universe, we don't need to worry about story, characters, tone, look, cohesiveness, casting, direction or anything else. If it features the nerds favorite characters, people will come out in droves to see it." You saw this years ago with the movie craze for trilogies. They saw that Lord of the Rings was a massive hit, and so everyone thought that trilogies were the way to go. It wasn't that LOTR was well directed, looked amazing and blended it's combination of CG and practical effects in a way that was fantastic and near flawless, told a great story and had an amazing cast (that kick started a lot of peoples careers none of that mattered, it was the fact that it was a trilogy that was why it made money. Even the people who made Lord of the Rings made the same mistake later when they did the Hobbit series. The Hobbit should have been two movies at most (or just a long single movie), they got greedy and tried to do another trilogy and they ended up with a bloated mess that veered too far from the source material (which to be fair is the weakest of Tolkien's books). This is also why we ended up with "The Dark Knight Trilogy" when it was clear they didn't really have a third act written for the story. The reason the MCU has succeeded is that Marvel is committed to actually making good individual movies, that happen to fit together as the interlocking pieces of a larger whole. That's why the MCU works, the individual movies are actually worth watching, and so you get invested with the characters and want to follow everyone's journey.
@pittland446 жыл бұрын
That's an interesting point about the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. That's the first time anybody tries blending fictional characters in that way in modern cinema (you could argue something like Abbot and Costello meet Frankenstein, Dracula and the Wolfman). However you also see that that movie was a total disaster and actually wrecked several peoples careers (including it's director) and drove Sean Connery, one of the most storied and bankable stars in Hollywood, into retirement.

I know comparing Nolan's take on comic book movies to WB's impossible nightmare disaster from Hell is old hate, but I wanna draw attention to something. Watch the Justice League trailer. Count the shots of apocalyptic doomsday shots of things blowing up (WHICH YOU HAVE TO DO OTHERWISE PEOPLE WILL ASSUME THIS FILM CONTAINS NO EXPLOSIONS). Now think about Nolan: What were the stakes at the end of every movie? Did the Joker wanna fire a blu laser at the sky? No, he just wanted to blow up a boat, but because the fundamental story was so compelling, we wind up caring way more about the 200 people on a boat than we do Space Warlord #4 's master plan to end daylights savings time. The simple fact is that the story dictates the stakes, not vice versa.

Justice League wanted to have their cake and eat it too. They wanted to pretend like MoS and BvS either didn't exist or were completely different and that Superman was always a beacon of hope to the world. Even though BvS was all about how people didn't trust Superman and even Superman was so depressed that he didn't want to be Superman anymore. But then the whole plot of the movie is dependent on BvS. They're still using the plot set up in BvS. Batman's character motivation is dependent on the events of BvS. They constantly reference BvS.

A lot of people complained about that but I think it is normal to idolize people after they die. Like Lincoln and Kennedy were not universally loved in their day, both were actually pretty controvertial. But after their asassination everyone wanted to pretend they were best friends the whole time. But I do agree the movie seemed totally unaware of this fact and just straightforwardly acted like everyone loved Superman, instead of showing that they only remembered it that way.

If Superman can solo the entire threat presented to the planet in the Justice League movie while a combination of Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Cyborg and Aquaman can't stop it, what does it say about the competence of those heroes in this universe? There's zero need for the Justice League to exist if Superman can do their job better than they can. _BY HIMSELF._ I get it, Superman is obviously the strongest hero in the setting, there's no disputing that, but the Justice League is supposed to be formed to take on threats he can't take on alone and needs allies for. Instead, in this universe, it's formed as a replacement for him until he can be brought back and he proceeds to render the entire existence of the JL in this universe pointless by pretty much soloing the villain. So what do we learn from the Justice League movie? That the titular League are all fucking geeks and Superman can defend the planet by himself. Nice one DCEU, just die already.

The idea that darker = more mature is actually a very juvenile concept. The only people that actually think like this are 'new adults' who still feel a need to distance themselves from childhood. Once you become an 'actual adult' you realize that desaturating a movie and littering it with cursing and tits does not make it seem remotely 'more adult'. It just makes it look like it was written and directed by a 14 year old. It becomes especially ironic when the subject matter is the onscreen realization of your childhood hero fantasies. Protip for those still making the journey to adulthood: Once you actually get there, you'll probably spend the rest of your life (and half your paycheck) trying to reverse the process.

Teens simply got wet at the idea of slaughtering children and the rest, including "professional" reviewers, followed suit.
@pittland446 жыл бұрын
I think there's a lot to that. I also am of the opinion that Zack Snyder isn't actually literate and never really read "The Dark Knight Returns" because that story didn't work for a starting point for either Batman or Superman because that's supposed to be the "Last" Batman story (Frank Miller said that). The problem is that Snyder thinks making things awful and dark and abysmal makes them better, and he doesn't understand that the whole relationship between Batman and Superman works because of the contrast with them. They're both good men trying to help people, but they don't agree on the best way to do that, which is what makes their interaction interesting. Snyder isn't actually interested in developing his characters or telling a story, he just wants the visual of Batman being murderous and Superman snapping peoples necks. He reminds me of a lot of people I knew in college who took introductory philosophy or economics classes and started blathering on about something they read two paragraphs about with existentialism or the labor theory of value (not to knock either of those disciplines they're both great and very interesting if you really get into them). He thinks he's saying something really deep, but in actuality he's as shallow as your average kiddy pool. The reason the dark moments in the MCU (such as the dark parts of Iron Man 3, Winter Soldier, Civil War, Guardians 2, etc.) work is because you have the lighter moments to contrast them. If you don't have that contrast then it doesn't hold together as a story but it also doesn't get you invested. Also, anyone who thinks BVS was equivalent to Casablanca or Citizen Kane needs their freakin' head examined. I love the Marvel movies, every one of them, but I have no illusions that they're top tier cinematic triumphs. They're great fun, and they've brought the comics world to life, but I would never say they're up there with the greatest movies of all time, and they don't have to be either.
@MrPiccoloku6 жыл бұрын

uzah88 I absolitely adore Steppenwolf because I see him as a Venture Bros character. He's so lacking in self-awareness of how bad he sucks, and I keep picturing that annoying the Monarch, who makes fun of him behind his back. Steppenwolf fails in every scene he's in. When we first see him, he loses to cavemen and has a panic attack. When the dumbass Amazons decide to hide the Mother Box under a pile of rocks, Steppenwolf knocks down a thin stone wall and tackles a horse before fleeing in terror from 50 cavewomen a third his size with no armor and Bronze Age weaponry. Then he wrestles Aquaman to a draw despite being, again, three times his size. And unlike Zod and Doomsday, Superman breaks his fucking spine with a single punch, quips as he tortures him with his laser eyes, then tosses his battered body to be lynched by the Justice League, which causes Steppenwolf to have yet another panic attack and get dragged away by his own henchmen (?) to....somewhere? Fuck Thanos. THAT'S an arc!

I was literally crying with the Metallica reference. I am one of those metalheads.

Back then it was all thrash metal or nothing to me. I thought the Black Album was as bad as it gets. I was more of a Slayer man myself so it wasn't as soulcrushing as for some other people. A friend of mine skipped school to go buy "Load" and to this day it's been the biggest disappointment he ever experienced.

seanmandence you nailed Metallica's direction...thank you...Load of shit, then Reload of shit and finally the worst shit of all, St Anger...at least Metallica went thrash again for most of Death Magnetic...I'm not impressed with their latest uninspired Hard Wired album though

Honestly I never got why people called Load and Reload alternative or selling out, especially when a lot of those same people act like the Black Album wasn't. Those albums always sounded more like mid 70's Black Sabbath or maybe Pepper Kennan led Corrosion of Conformity more than anything that was popular in the mid 90's. It's just perhaps they missed the mark a little bit after 15 years of touring and wanting to go in a direction that they didn't know quite how to nail. I think those albums probably would have been better received if they were about 20 minutes shorter. To reply to seanmandence Nickelback was huge in 2003 but they went with more of a System of a Down sound...and failed miserably. I love SoaD but think St Anger was one of the dumbest records I've ever heard. None of the songs needed to be over 4 minutes and Lars' snare didn't need to be replaced with a trash can. It's crazy to think Nirvana recorded Bleach for less than $700 and it's a better sounding record production wise. PS The Melvins are the best band ever. I always enjoy seeing them get recognition!

seasofluck Bleach was recorded with $700? That's fucking nuts. Also where would be a good starting point for The Melvins? I've heard their name before because I think they toured with Tool once (one of my favorite bands of all time. Though I hate saying it because Tool has some of the worst fans on the planet) but I never gave them a chance.
