Always Board Never Boring does a quick round-up of the various small projects he has undertaken as part of the larger, ongoing Advanced Heroquest project. In this video he talks about creating player aids, making Advanced Heroquest tiles out of the tiles from Mighty Warriors, rebasing miniatures, and repainting a goblin.
The recipe for goblin skin is:
Orruk Flesh basecoat (2 thin coats).
Agrax Earthshade wash.
Orruk Flesh highlight.
Ogryn Camo glaze to build highlights.
Here are the time stamps:

Please note, for some reason, in this video I keep saying Mighty Warriors contains only two of the floor plans required for Terror in the Dark. It actually has three of the six!

Many moons again, a bloke by the name of Bardic Broadcasts did a video on HeroQuest. In that video he went into why a hand painted board always looks better for hand painted models, than a digital image mousepad mat. Indeed it does.

I've just ordered a load of standard HQ style bases from Zealot Minatures aiming to base minatures from Dark World, Battlemasters, Talisman 3rd, D&D Adventure Board Game and Warhammer FB. Would love to see some more videos on standard HeroQuest basing, tile making etc with your thoughts on the best matches.

I've never seen the Zealot bases in real life, but have seen pictures online and they look like a great match for the original HeroQuest integrated bases. I did a video as part of my HeroQuest restoration project about painting the original HeroQuest bases, and there are other videos in that series about repairing and fixing up the original game components. However I've never actually made any new tiles for the game, and now Avalon Hill are pumping out regular content for their new edition, I'm not sure when or if I will.

Great video! I would be interested in a video comparing all the different versions of the AHQ rules out there. Your videos got me interested in trying AHQ, but an original copy is out of my price range, and there are great print and play options out there - too many in fact. Your take on which ones you would recommend would be very interesting!

There was lots of new content published in White Dwarf magazine. Some of it was compiled into the Terror in the Dark expansion, but there were a lot of other missions, characters, and monsters that weren't. If you search Google for Advanced Heroquest White Dwarf articles you will find comprehensive lists on various sites, and there are numerous places like Scribd where you can download them.

Here's a fun little tidbit: Do you want to roleplay as Gotrik Gurnisson and Felix Jaeger in Advanced Heroquest? Did you know that there exist Official Games Workshop Advanced Heroquest statistics for both these characters? -- They can be found printed in White Dwarf 125. Interestingly, the stats-line for Gotrek is substantially higher than for baseline heros. Compare to the Barbarian from the box: WeaponSkill 12 vs. 8. Srength 9 vs. 7. Toughness 11 vs. 6. Wounds 7 vs. 5. and Fatepoints 5 vs. 2! I don't think anyone in the world has commited a Gotrek and Felix AHQ dungeon explore to KZbin... (saying nothing of the awesome 1990s minis for them both...)

Thanks for showing what you do to make the tiles and fill gaps in bases, these are things I will need to do at some points. When you print out tiles, do you have a high quality printer for it? I just know if I did it with mine it would look rubbish! And when you’re building up the glaze, do you keep the mixture the same each time, or do you add more of the lighter colour to each subsequent application? Sorry for the questions, I’m still learning about painting and the crafting side of the hobby.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Жыл бұрын
Ideally you want the best quality printer, printing the highest quality image you can find onto the best quality paper. But the reality is, I do the best I can with a £50 family colour inkjet, because that's life. The point of a glaze is it's translucent so the dark paint shows through it. If you start adding more paint you lose the translucency and you will ruin your subtle blending and transitioning between layers. The glaze stays the same, and you are just gradually building up coats of it on the miniature so you start seeing less and less of your darker base colour showing through.

The Terror in the Dark prices are insane for what it is. It would be more understandable if there were some rare miniatures in it. The tiles are available in several places. Heroquestadventures is a good place as it has lots of artwork from different games.

I like the gobbo. Round bases are so wierd for this game. Again I think it's just becasue they never bothered to do squares in colors. Maybe they should have.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Жыл бұрын
I really dithered over the idea of getting everything onto square bases for this game but I just couldn't do it in the end. I know it's a bit weird, but the round bases felt like part of the original aesthetic and I couldn't part with it. Also, so many of the miniatures would have ended up diagonal on the bases, and I really didn't want that.
@nickbangr
@nickbangr Жыл бұрын
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring I left another comment about bases here but this is also another consideration, that some models will have to be either diagonal or facing longways on the square tile, but I don't know, as much as the original aesthetic of AHQ calls for round bases I would feel weird plopping down the HQ skeletons or mummies on their square bases next to a bunch of round base models. I'm still a ways off from finishing painting the entire HQ collection but this is something I'm already trying to figure out.

@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring The skaven are supposed to be diagonal. Heroes could be on 25mm and mounted straight using the other slot too. Besides they are still diagonal on rounds, you just haven't seen it yet.....

@bigbloke2000 Жыл бұрын
@@johnmiddleton4291 Having just finished painting and rebasing all HQ and AHQ miniatures onto square "slotta bases" I can add a few things that mgiht help: 1. unified bases across HQ and AHQ looks great and is incredibly satisfying. 2. AHQ plastic skaven in 20x20mm bases need to go diagonal, the slots in the bases will need extending to maximum capacity and the slots on the skaven minis will need trimming at either end. If you want to use these skaven for Warhammer (where they need to be ranked up), alternate the positioning of the miniatures between facing the "thin" vs. "thick" triangle on a slottabased. 3. If you are familiar with 'old school' warhamemr thinking about the base sizes used in that game when deciding square base sizes. Chaos warriors, Chaos Sorceror and the Barbarian benefit from 25x25mm bases. Gargoyle is ambiguous to base (perhaps depending on whether you paint him as such or as a teenie Bloodthirster [with a Napolean complex]). The big connundrum though will be base sizes for Fimirs. In Warhammer and AHQ these are on 40x40mm bases (or perhaps even 50x50mm). However, the HQ fimir risk looking "swamped" by being put on such a large base. Putting them on such bases also makes it harder to use them in HQ.

I hate trying to keep a KZbin comment conversation straight. It's so confusing. Sorry if I miss anything. Here goes... @Nick It's not that the original aesthetic calls for round bases, it's that the came uses round bases, and so I wanted to preserve that original aesthetic. Plopping down a HeroQuest miniature next to anything always looks weird because they are on thin, rectangular, lipped, integrated bases. Even next to square bases they look different in shape, style, and height. You would need to rebase them. @John Middleton I tinkered with square bases quite a bit before going back to round bases. I didn't want to have some things on 20mm squares and some on 25mm squares. By sticking with the circle bases, only very large monsters would be different, as they would be on square 4x4 bases. Personally, I don't like the look of the skaven standing diagonally; it looks a bit weird because of their flat, forward-facing sculpts. Keeping them on round bases also makes it easier to "jiggle" them if they need to fit into a crowded area where swords might be poking adjacent models. The Fantasy Regiment skaven that they also threw into the Advanced Heroquest painting set look really good mounted diagonally though. Their stance, and the way you can pose the heads, means they are angled but facing forwards. Those are great sculpts. Overall, I think square bases probably still might be the better option, and I certainly wouldn't tell someone they were wrong for doing it, but in the end, I couldn't resist going with the round bases. I gave up trying to fight my nature a long time ago! @Mag pie Just to note, Fimir in Advanced Heroquest are not classed as large monsters. Probably because they assumed people would be using their HeroQuest fimirs.

I mentioned in a previous video that I prefer plastic miniatures but a lot of that has to do with the fact I was hoping to make my entire AHQ and HQ beastiary unified basewise, I have printed plastic replicas of the square HQ bases and am planning to use that for all the AHQ and WHQ minis that I'd be using, but maybe I should abandon this idea because the round bases leave more room for some of the wider stanced models. What are your thoughts? I was thinking of using the longer rectangle bases (like the giant wolf) for larger monsters like the minotaur (WHQ) as an example.
@bigbloke2000
@bigbloke2000 Жыл бұрын
IIRC: AHQ has rules for "large monsters" (as the game calls them) which need to be based on square bases that cover 2x2 AHQ squares. Do check before you rebase your WHQ and HQ models. I have just rebased by HQ miniatures onto "slotta bases" for AHQ and they do look great combined. My ownly wish is that the henchmen of the two games were in the same style!
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Жыл бұрын
HeroQuest bases are a weird rectangular shape that work with the very planar sculpts. They aren't the most convenient for basing other sorts of miniatures. The Advanced Heroquest core set models have very wide stances and even on a 25mm square base a forward-facing skaven's feet overhang the base. As Mag Pie mentions, large monsters like ogres and trolls cover four squares on the board, so that's something to keep in mind.

It's unlike anything else. It's almost as if the creators of Dark Souls created that game after being psychologically scared from too many games of AHQ as a child. The Heroes are not "Heroes", they are fools who are probably going to die the first time they go into a dungeon -- or run away screaming and possibly missing a limb (technically possible in-game)
