A place of your own, that doesn't have a ton of monthly bills, a place you can grow your own food, but yet close enough to town to work...... your ranch sounds like my kind of heaven. Dont let someone else push their expectations for life on you. Some people love urban life, some people love rural life everyone is different but to provide your kids with opportunities to learn valuable skills of being self sufficient as they grow up, ranch chores, etc it will stand them in better stead than video games and toys and they can even enjoy ranch life. If you want to grow your own food with minimal work then check out aquaponics. The only thing I will say remember what you wanted when you started this chapter in your life.

I once worked for someone that had lived a couple of years just outside of town. He said he loved it but the drive into town everyday ultimately made him decide to move back into town. For some reason that comment stuck in the back of my mind. A few years later I bought my land out in the country (50 miles from work). I kept thinking about his comment and wondering if I too would grow tired of the drive. 10 years later it dawned on me he did not make it 2 years and I was going strong after 10 years. It was 33 years ago that I moved out here. As long as your wife is happy it will be fine.

We live 5 km off the the high way, 2 of these are a logging road, which have not been plowed by the forestry for 8 years or more the other 30 we juggled with logging trucks. We have been living here for 38 years, raised our kids here. Both my husband and I worked, him of course all 38 years, me for 20 of theses years, we live with 3 to 5 ft of snow most winters, and come March, about 4 weeks, the road becomes an ice rink. A good four wheel drive is a most, not an all wheel but a true 4 wheel, chains and a strong stomach for 5 mins of excitement twice a day for that 4 weeks are required. ( we have a switch back to maneuver one of these km.). We are prepared for this every year, towns people would stay home when the weather was bad, but we always got to work. The first couple of years are the worst, but down the road it becomes the norm. We have great neighbors, my husband is a gas-fitter, so the ranch down the road plows us about twice a year, and my husband does their gas fitting. There are years when there is so much snow our neighbor can’t plow any more, that’s were the chains come in handy. Do we regret our move out here? Once in a while but it goes away the min we hit town. By the way we also live off the grid, with generator & solar for electricity. The kids loved it, but all but 1 of the four live in town. The 1 who lives rural owns a ranch. So my encouragement for you and your family, don’t give up for at least 5 years. The hardest time will be when the kids are teens and want to be in events and with their friends in town. Once that is over you and your wife will love the peace and quiet. In joy your adventure, people never tire of asking us how we survive, and we laugh. Ps: our kids went to school in town from here, driven to the highway and then bused to town. Also the pics of your road look normal to us. Lol

No need for new vehicles for riding the road. You have heavy equipment that could be used to regrade the roads and put in a drainage ditch on one side. You should check out some videos on a guys channel call "Andrew Camarata". He does some amazing fixes on some roads for part of his living.

Yes most definitely camarata is a straight up work horse just like heath absolutely love both there channels. He would definitely gain end knowledge from Andrew to fix his road for sure.

My daughter, Shannon and I watch all of your awesome videos. I am 69 this month and my daughter is disabled. We bought 24 acres in East Texas to homestead. It was so covered in heavy brush and old structures, that the only way we could penetrate it was with heavy equipment. We spent months hauling water from town before getting our well. We had only 2 electric plugs for a year and no plug to run AC. The The Texas heat registered 120 F on our covered porch the first summer we were here. We bathed in a stock tank for 2 years. The rain has come down in torrents for 3 years, with little reprieve. We learned to watch the low spots and tweaked our drainage for months to tell the land where the water needed to run off. We love learning to ranch and farm still; the wolves, bobcats, deer are wonderful. We will be building out our barndominium for along time. We are soon to clear 5 acres for 3 barns and flocks. We are putting in place our beehives and had to whittle an area for them. We are thrilled to see your job list moving along and we are so happy to see that you love your place as we love ours.

Lol 😂 your road sounds like my driveway, I encourage my husband not to fix it to much so we don’t get to many visitors. Think you’re making the best decisions for you and your family . They will love living in the beautiful country and seeing all the cool animals. So happy for you at how close the house is to getting finished.

Katie Blakely I always lived in the sticks . I move closer to town and hate it. I really miss the quiet and true nature. There more to life the shops. And I think it’s great to raise your children in nature

It needs to be constructed to the degree to where a rescue vehicle (ambulance at a minimum and a FD brush truck also) can traverse the road. If the worry about "trespassers" or "other non-invited guests" is warranted, then maintaining the road/driveway in such a poor state to deter them from using it is crazy. There are methods that can be used at the head of the road or at the point where he connects to the public use portion to block or restrict egress. Pull-offs or wide spots (enough where 2 vehicles can go by one another safely (if one is stopped in the pull-off) should be considered also.

Have you considered the possibilities of an alternate mode of transportation in the winter months ? leaving your vehicles at a safe place near the main road and using a snow mobile or a side by side with tracks to navigate the driveway. check out what Boss of the swamp does he's set up pretty good.

I grew up in town. My high school best friend grew up 35 miles from town. 17 miles off the pavement. By the time we were grown men, he knew how to do literally 10 x more things than I did. Very efficient and self sufficient. A master of all trades. A true mountain wild man, cattle rancher and hunter. Great tree faller and saw mill operator. I am still trying to catch up. Lol. Sounds like you’re considering how your kids will turn out. I like that.

My parents never consulted me or my siblings on their decisions for our future. Why? Because we could never see what our parents saw ...or knew about the world. When they moved us out to the piney woods with no neighbors it was the best move of our lives. Summers spent swimming in the creek and fishing. Biking 4 miles to the nearest town ( not one red light ). To this very day ( we are all near or in our 60's ) we recall that childhood in the woods of Western Tennessee as the best times of our lives. Nothing compares. Winters by the fireplace, Autumn pumpkin carving, raking and burning leaves, Summer catching fireflies and sleeping out in tents and in the Spring just watching everything come to life was pure magic for all of us. Your children will thank you one day if you make this move. All the best.
