I feel in this case the "pack hunting" is excusable as it was just two animals which could easily be a mated pair. Birds are some of the most monogamous animals alive today and even though they rarely hunt together some birds of prey like Secretary Birds, Harris Hawks and African Black Eagles do hunt in pairs. A mated pair hunting together is a lot more believable to the huge packs we often see in media.

When it was debunked, that Dromeosaurids weren't pack hunters, in the same way as Wolfes or Lions, it's like paleocommunity decided to make a complete 180 of their opinion and now it's almost a sin to show them working together, even if it's a small group of individuals, like it was here, even though there's big amount of evidence of this beha both from birds and even crocodiles

Nerd beast, you are right my friend, I don't think they were pack hunters but maby they would hunt in pairs as mates, like some raptors today. I actually had a conversation with Phil Manning about this a few years ago. Specifically, the experiment where they rammed a Triceratops into the block of foil. I always hated that the front of the snout snapped in half in the experiment not only because it shattered a childhood image, but that I always though the snout was stronger than that. As it turns out, that particular experiment was doctored a bit. They continuously slammed the skull into the same block dozens of times until they got the result where the front of the snout broke. So, take that for what it is, but it sounds like despite how much Phil Manning had to contribute to this documentary, there were still a few bits that were tweaked to get the dramatic result the producers wanted.

The rant about pack hunting is more of a stretch here since only two Velociraptors are shown at once during their various hunts and the notion of a raptor pack being unstoppable is directly shot down. Modern birds tend to spend time with their mate for a extended period of time and a decent amount are monogamous entirely. Since dromaeosaurs are paraves this then isn't very unreasonable especially given how similar they were to modern raptors. As for their 'coordinated' hunting, one raptor does most of the work while the other bites and stabs on occasion.

I really think my biggest problem with this documentary is that there are only two episodes. I think it would have been so easy to make at least one or two more. When I saw this documentary, it was on the Discovery Channel, not BBC, and it had been renamed "Dinosaur Face-Off", so I was under the impression this was many episodes, not just two, and each episode was going to focus on iconic Dinosaur face-offs to find out who would truly win. So I immediately assumed that there was going to be an Episode 3, and it was going to focus on Allosaurus Vs. Stegosaurus, but sadly that did not happen.

It's where I learned that _Velociraptor_ couldn't slash with its claw - I remember being like, "!!!! WOOOOOAAAHHHHHHH NO WAY IT COULDN'T????" - and I'm pretty sure that's also where I learned that we have evidence _T. rex_ actively hunted.

The rants about pack hunting in Velociraptors / social life in Tyrannosaurs was weird, for being so completely detrimental. Sure, T-Rex might be intelligent enough to hunt in little groups as well as alone, but Velociraptor (despite being pretty intelligent as well) is supposed to be solitary because modern predator birds mostly are? I don't think that quite makes it, since it all depends on environments, potential prey and the general life cycle.

Just a couple of things about the Ankylosaurs. We do have evidence of banded segments on ankylosaurs. The Scolosaurus has a remarkably well preserved (albeit quite flattened) back armour and another Saichania holotype has the front segment of its armour in articulation. Whilst it isn't as smooth as the ones in arthropods they made of fused smaller osteoderms and oscicles and probably existed to allow mobility. Giving an appearence somewhat closer to a cross between a Yushman and a Kalantar rather than a lorica segmentata Additionally, contrary to what is often said, the larger keeled plates are not the only form of armour there are a fused smaller osteoderms and osicles between them, but these tend to disipate upon death and do not fossilize well but there are known fossils where these are preserved.

I do have to object to the pack hunting rant here. It's rather common among birds to live in pairs and mate for life, and seeing how birds are the closest living relatives to Dromeaosaurids, I don't think it would be much of a stretch to apply that to them. There is a MASSIVE difference between the wolf-like packs that we see in many documentaries and in movies, and a mated pair hunting together to ensure success like we are shown here. Hell, you literally used this very same argument with Tyrannosaurus. It *could* have lived in groups (I subscribe to the thought of a mated pair of Rexes living and hunting together with their adolescent young, a family group at most). I just find the rant here a bit hypocritical imo.

Since stegosaurus would be larger and have the intimidating look, I think that the most common scenario would be allosaurus backing down. The second would teb the stegosaurus severely injuring allosaurus with its spikes. And then a scenario where allosaurus wins is when it works together with other allosaurus to bring it down. I feel like there wouldn't be many conflicts between Spinosaurus and Carcarodontosaurus due to having different niches. But if it happens the result will be based on behavior. The more intimidating animal will prevail. I'd it gets into a real fight it will end with the spinosaurus injuring it or the carcarodontosaurus driving it away. Deinosuchus vs albertosaurus would likely happen on the shore with deinosuchus ambushing it. It would depend on if the Albertosaurus sees it coming. Edmontosaurus vs T.rex will be based on time and place. T.rex would likely go for lone and injured ones. It would ambush it and deliver a killing blow. Contrary to common media however, Hadrosaurs were not defenseless. Edmontosaurus may have been larger than T.rex and it could use its bulk to drive it away. Therizinosaurus vs tarbosaurus wouldn't have happened very much. Those claws could destroy tarbo but tarbo is a tyrannosaurid with numerous advantages too. Idk

Crocodilians are smart anyway. They study us, remember us and learn over time. For example crocodiles will watch the behaviour of those living near their homes and remember that people go to get water from the river every morning, so they will learn that it is a great time for a snack at that place and time. That's why it is critical to never become a creature of habit around crocodilians. There have even been cases where crocodiles learn that people sleep in tents at night and have gone in and taken someone, which is a complete reworking of hunting behaviour (and also why you sleep on your roof or in the vehicle when camping near crocodiles. If T-rex is a stupid as modern crocodilians then it can observe, remember, recognise patterns, strategise and implement a plan which is quite smart.

Crocodilians are surprisingly intelligent. Capable of remembering and even bonding, to a point, to certain people and even learning and responding to names given to them. Also, I'd like to point out that just because there is no direct evidence of dromaeosaurs or any other dinosaur hunting or living together, and there never WILL be, because all we can do is a assume they did or didn't based on what we see. Remember that something like only .2% of any bone ever fossilizes. Fossilization takes a long time and needs very specific conditions to even happen, added to that, lots of things can go wrong during that process. More than half of any dinosaur material and evidence we even have is based on fragments of bone and very few complete or nearly complete fossils exist.

It’s about the last non avian dinosaur during the KT extinction and eventually unknowingly being the last of its kind as it starves to death. I was originally going to do a ceratopsian or a duck bill but I don’t want to use a over used dinosaur. I did look a torosaurus and styracosaurus (forgive my spelling I am dyslexic) but a lot of my findings were extremely conflicting. Some studies said maybe while others said no towards several ceratopsians living to the KT extinction. Troodon will be making a appearance and will be the threat for the film and out of sheer desperation it try’s taking down the lone survivor herbivore who won’t be fully gown and will be a adolescent possibly juvenile since I doubt a full sized ceratopsian or duck bill could survive the initial impact. Do you know of any recent studies or documentary’s at all that talk about the dinosaurs which lived to possibly see the extinction? I am sorta unsure who else to ask, I did go to my local natural history museum and they had no clue because our dinosaur records in the U.K. don’t go to the late Cretaceous.

Troodon isn’t a valid genus, just call it by its family name: Troodontid. As for your idea, I love it. Thomas Holtz actually gave a full segment in Dinosaur Revolution, describing how troodontids would’ve lasted the longest out of the non avian dinosaurs.

Okay I agree that dromaeosaurids and troodontids didn't pack hunt, but you don't have to be so sarcastic about them not pack hunting because it is still a possibility that they pack hunted just slim.

Finally, another Dinosaur Documentary Accuracy video and this time on Truth about Killer Dinosaurs, a way better version of Jurassic Fight Club and Monsters Resurrected in my opinion. This is way better than Jurassic Fight Club and Monsters Resurrected in my opinion, not as good as Planet Dinosaur, Dinosaur Revolution and possibly Walking with Dinosaurs but still a pretty underrated dinosaur documentaries in my opinion.

Jurassic Fight club didn't really care about accuracy, and just cared about making the dinosaurs seem overly pragmatic and bloodthirsty than most animals in real life are.

Having a brain like a crocodile or alligator certainly doesn't indicate a lack of intelligence. I work with both and they are far, far more intelligent than anyone gives them credit for. So yeah, Tyrannosaurs would have been pretty smart for their time.

Crocodilians are literally being able to use tools and use an abstract thinking in some extent. On top of that, crocodilians had a passive life most of the time, when they just need to wait their pray and not move much. A T-Rex, that spended most of his time walking, clearly had more moments to use it's brain

I wish they could have done one for Pachycepholosaurus. Because I remember a theory that said they couldn't use their domes to do long distance ramming against each other due to how smooth and convex they were. They would likely miss the center, and slide off into each other's faces.

Maybe they traveled in flocks and hunted on their own or maybe they swarmed prey items. The list goes on with the ways they may have been social. A lot of animals are social in one way or another. Pack hunting is definitely a very speculative theory

I wish more Dino docs could be like this, busting myths instead of making up with nonsense and portraying them as violent killing machines Plus the name, “the truth about killer dinos”, good way to draw in an audience, whether you want to know the truth or want to see killer dinos only to be educated about them

On one hand some of the tests in the documentary are a bit janky, like the Triceratops ramming test. All the other hand you could make the argument that the verdict battles are pretty much the antithesis of predator biased Awesomebro ideals.
@GeteMachine
@GeteMachine 2 жыл бұрын
I accept the Triceratops test, because it makes sense. The horns being further back on the head unlike a Rhino wouldn't make them possible for ramming, and the head being too long to tuck under. If anything the horns were more like just deterrence spikes.
