I hired one for a few days. Fun fact- the strings on the door pocket Adam played with are a fifth and a flat seventh from the fundamental (the tightest one.) Which means at the lights you can play the intro to Talking Heads "Psycho Killer" on them. Glad you read so far now? edit: it seems the BYD is the first ev to need a tune up... No I'm not sorry.

Fellas, once again thanks very much for another amazing review! Love your work, and I really appreciate that you’ve covered an EV. I’m an owner of a BYD Dolphin, which has the same chassis, battery, motor and so on. I’ve been a two wheel and four wheel rev head all my life and this car after one year and 40,000 kms, I still love it as much as I did during my honeymoon period. I’m a driving instructor and clock up a 1000 kms a week. I charge at home, don’t miss trying to find time to get to a petrol station and I’m so happy to have to not ruin my Sunday with doing an oil and filter changer every 10 weeks. Wireless CarPlay was added to all cars in a software update so is not limited to 2024 models. As Atto owners with a great deal on a used 2023 model so far we have had zero problems, not a rattle or squeak to hear. I can confirm the Batman tyres are rubbish in the wet and the range is overstated. New Michelin’s on the way and the range for us is not a problem. The emergency braking is no better or worse than the Subaru Foresters EyeSite system that was our last car. For me one of the best cars and most surprising for quality I have owned. No it won’t suit everyone but if you are considering an EV that’s a small SUV it’s worth a test drive. If you want to stick with ICE that’s fine too. Edit…another correction, BYD use a Blade battery that has different chemistry to other EV batteries. There is no reason you can’t charge it to 100% on a regular basis. In fact in the owners manual BYD advise it should be charged to 100% at least once a week. The Blade battery should be good for 5000 full cycles according to all the tests so will lasts the average user well into the future. Keep in mind that BYD started building batteries 30years ago long before they started building cars so are very familiar with the technology.

ICE cars also depreciate. I had a BMW X5 (purchased for close to $100,000) traded it in for $10,000 ten years later. In the meantime, the door actuators had to be replaced, radiator decided to pack it in while driving in the Sydney Harbour Tunnel (that was fun), service was $1500 a pop. Replaced it with a Camry hybrid and enjoyed a decade of trouble free motoring. Now I have an EV and so far so good. I also have solar so I pay zip for fuel and servicing is every 2 years. Comprehensive insurance cost me less than $720 (pays to shop around).

I bought a used Atto 3. Best car I have ever owned. Bought with 7,000. It now has 39,000km. It goes as well as the day I bought it. Some small issues. It gets hot when sitting still in the traffic. I put an inside reflective sun-shield in for the sunroof. That helped. I also added stick-on white auto-vinyl on the outside of the sunroof - that helped more. I always use a windscreen sunshield when I park. Yes, the door panels get dinged from being doored in the carpark. Part of the issue is that it is a bit wider than some cars, but that also makes it handle better. A few minor electronic bugs, that seem to be fixed by restarting. The corner of the driver's door had a sharp plastic corner, which gashed my leg - I cut it off with a razor blade - problem solved. All the other corners were already fixed. Yes, the standard tyres are a bit slippery in the wet, but I will replace them soon. They are still working fine in the dry after three rotations. Part of the problem is the immense torque. The range is about 380 to 420 km in the city, depending on how you drive, but 300 to 330km on the highway. The slower you drive, the further you can go, or just stop more often. Topping up to 75% to 80% when on the highway gives quicker charging, because that's the point at which the charging slows down. I took the cables and foam out of the boot and put the floor down for boot space. Two large suitcases can fit, with some side space, with the shelf still in.

Great review guys. Its nice to see an unbiased review on an EV, good or bad. We own a cupra born atm and love our EV for every day communting. Owning an EV does take a mindset change though, and just keep it charged, which means its on charge 2 times a week, and keeping your car in the 20-80% sweet spot means you get nowhere near the wltp claims. But for a city car, we wont go back to ICE. We have a diesel 7seat SUV if we need it for longer trips and family things.

The drivers complaining about the car breaking all of a sudden: this happened to me once, in a very narrow street where I was driving just a few centimeters away from parked cars. Other than that, nothing to report. They just need to learn how to overtake (go into the next lane soon enough instead of tailgating like a moron before a takeover). I do agree on the lane assist being too aggressive. I tend to disable it when I'm driving in the UK, with all their garbage roads (I go to the UK 3-4 times a year, so I know this is specific to places with bad roads, as I haven't had any problems anywhere in Europe except for the UK)

6 months ago it was time to go fully electric with our 2nd car and get something used (our main car is an MG4). The ATTO 3 was still out of our budget so we decided to trade our i30 for a used 2021 MG ZS EV. It doesn't have half the bells and whistles of the BYD but it's comfortable, reliable and does everything we want an electric car to do. Best of all, you can find them for under $20K.

I've got a Chinese made 2022 Ford Territory, which isn't available in Oz, but is one of the best cars I've owned, for the purpose it serves. I've owned Mercs, two Alfas, a Porsche 911S4, a Range Rover and a few Korean and Japanese cars, but now that I'm older and based in the Philippines for work, I sit in a lot of traffic jams and drive on bad roads, and this vehicle had held up really well. The build quality is superb, and the interior is really nice, and it's well equipped. It's a cross over with an ICE turbo, so it's got decent get up and go, but it's the extras that stand out, like adaptive cruise, ldw, panoramic sunroof, 360 camera, seat cooling etc. And it was affordable. It was actually tuned and co developed by Ford Australia. The Philippines has a lot of Chinese vehicles, and they hold up really well here and have a great reputation for reliability.

The battery charging advice from Jim is not quite correct. The BYD Atto3 has a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery as opposed to the "regular" NMC batteries. The old advice of "not too full, not too empty" doesn't apply fully. Operating at maxiumum charge all the time is still bad for the battery (although they handle it better than NCM battery chemisty) however operating at low charge is actually good for battery longevity. For maximum theoretical longevity, operating at low voltages (charging between 0-25%) is technically the best. Obviously that's not very practical, and due to the battery chemisty, the % remaining could be innacurate. Because the charge curve of LFP batteries is so flat, every now and then the battery needs to be charged to 100% to reset the systems detection of battery charge. Jason @ Engineering Explained has a well referenced video kzbin.info/www/bejne/rWLdfJl_hrqEY9U

I test drove one brand new last year and I’m not sure what happened but I unironically thought the interior materials were terrible, normally if it’s acceptable it’s okay, but it was so bad that it was a dealbreaker, especially the hard plastic parts and how much hard plastic there was on the centre console and shifter and the door bins Especially considering the Lexus NX you pointed out at the end for the same price, infinitely better build quality interior Or if I wanted something newer the NX’s younger brother a Toyota rav4 for the same price WAY better buys unless you’re sold on an EV

Yes, it is very easy to rotate but I like it and when I had to drive Cerato afterwards, I always though about how more difficult it was to do that. Plus there is a settins there that affect the steering wheel behavior. I STRONGLY SUGGEST anyone interested in this car - go TRY IT YOURSELF !!, don't let reviews like that turn you away (not sure what "feel" the reviewer wanted to have from the car 🤔). Calling them brand new is simply wrong. The one we reviewed had 75,000kms, on it. There's only one way to describe that car - used. Others we are basing the critique on had 100,000kms+ and had seen thousands of customers through ride-sharing. Time is only one component of durability. Use is another. Sure, it's newer than most cars we review, we don't deny that, but even if they're only 6, 12, 18 months old, whatever it may be, that's the state people are buying them. Purchased the MGZS EV about a year ago, and had the 7Kw charger at home installed. Done 50,000 kilometres, no issues whatsoever. MG has a bigger dealer network and a 7 year warranty, so that's why I chose it over the BYD. As far as devaluation is concerned, it only cost me $20 per week to travel 50,000 klms a year. it pays for itself over the 7 year warranty period. Devaluation? Meh. Calculate $100 per week of petrol over 7 years! So far so good. It is what it is, but what it is is OK. Nowhere near as bad as you would think. The power is delicious. Like me, if you can live with it, it is hands down the superior choice. Kind of feels like going back to petrol would be a majour downgrade. One year on, I would never wish to turn the clock back. Not sure you can form any meaningful opinion on reliability, given it's been around for 5 minutes, unless it's really bad, straight out of the gate? Hired one of these for 10 days/1700km. A pretty decent drive, very comfy, versatile and looks well put together. A little floaty at higher speeds. But rewards with smooth ride around our crappy suburban roads. Nice and punchy, like most BEV's.

In terms of length of time since it was released, it’s one of the newer cars we’ve reviewed. Though the info in the video is largely based around an owner we spoke to who owns 7 Atto 3s used for a ride sharing business. All of them with over 100,000kms, which puts them on par with cars 5+ years old

Its all well and good ReDriven saying we should appreciate each powerplant for what it can do, but the manufacturers and marketeer wankers keep offering things it cant do. It continues to be marketed as a replacement for the ICE but until it can do what an ICE does for a similar purchase and running cost, it will not be universally accepted. People will not tolerate a backward step for a higher price and many cant afford to do so anyway.

EV's are a backwards step in some ways compared to an ICE car, but in many ways they are far better. It mostly depends on your personal circumstances, but if you have your own home (particularly if you have solar), and you don't drive very long distances often, nothing compares to an EV for a daily driver. It's hard to fathom how easy and convenient they are to use and how cheap they are to run and maintain compared to an ICE car. EV technology will continue to improve, particularly with regard to battery density and charging rates, and that will help with some of their drawbacks in the coming decades.

@@moggy4086 The trouble is there are many many ppl that do not have solar, or a garage, or the money to purchase one, but the govt is mandating no new ICE cars from XXXX. It's only a good replacement for a small sector of cars. The" battery tech will get better" is an annoying cliche that has worn very thin. Coz it isnt true to any significant degree. Li ion was invented in the 1970s, not put into cars until 1998 and here we are 26 yrs later. You're blowing smoke out of your bum. Its only 6 years until new ICEs are banned in some countries. The boffins better get their shit together in a hurry. We dont have decades.

An ICE car is at least 20 times more likely to catch fire than an EV. There have been only nine EV fires in all of Australia in the last four years, while there have been tens of thousands of ICE car fires in that time. There are issues when it comes to EV's, in that they aren't the answer for everyone, but the massively decreased chance of fire in an EV is a significant strength of the type when compared to ICE vehicles.

I have an Atto Extended and broadly agree with your assessment. They are a great car and I too love the interior style. I also do not get the stated WLTP range for the Extended. I find I typically get 360-390km for city driving and 300-330km for freeways. However, only once have I driven from 100% down to 1% for a real range test (rather than making an estimate) and achieved 388km. The dynamic calculated range on the driver's display is rubbish. I totally concur with having a gear lever in the familiar location of older cars as opposed to a rotary switch or stalk. I really detest the trend by manufacturers away from having a typical gear lever. Other things I love about the Atto are the fact it has a broad sunroof that opens and a sunshade. Other EV's that I'm aware of do not offer this. Agreed regarding the suspension. On a bumpy country road it feels like being in a dinghy riding the ocean swell. Agree also that the air-conditioning is a bit insipid in hot weather. Part of the problem is heat from the sunroof. I believe this can be mitigated with tinting of the sunroof, but I haven't tried this yet. Agree about charging speed: DC 89kW Max is a bit disappointing in this day and age with numerous competitor EV's offering significantly faster charging. AC charging could also be faster. However, I find 7kW adequate for overnight charging. I really love the Atto and think in many ways it is one of best EV's on the market for its size, style and features, notwithstanding the underperformance on the stated WLTP range and the disappointing charging speed. I would love an upgraded version with a bigger battery, perhaps 70-80kWh, and faster charging, perhaps 150kW or more.

I'm sure its reasonably well built, the Chinese home brand Auto industry would _not_ be selling under-baked cars on the world market...just as the Japanese wouldn't have in the 1960/70's _however_ the design leaves much to be desired with the interior looking like a wet tissue draped over a milk bottle tied together with a red cable tie. Build Your Dreams might work in Nigeria...it doesn't in established markets, and is highly presumptive in the negative.

You mention a lot of different software issues faced by owners and you brush it off saying that restarting it tends to fix it or an update might. Adas and other software issues you say is common with it applying brakes or aggressive lane keeping. These are worrying signs of buggy software and it not working on Tesla's Supercharger network where other BYDs do! Again an issue with software
