In this Quick Tip, Elly Wade (@itwaselly) shows how to use the new Flakes shader in Redshift, including how to create your very own metallic car paint shader.

Hi maxon, there's a issue. I can't use shadow matte plame with redshift enviorenment with fog enabled. It becomes white.

Thank you very much for this tip. Could you explain why flakes shader should connect to bump? Why not to Metalness or to Reflection roughness? And what if I would like to add real bump shader with normal map to bump on the surface?

Pretty cool. Great tutorial. But as this title states the obvious, it should apply for all DCC's, yes? But in Houdini you still need to use a BumpMap node. Otherwise, the shader won't have any effect. Just a heads up. Thanks for the great tutorial.

Is it me or does the RS Render View lag on mac? I bought a maxed out Mac Studio (M1 Ultra) because they featured C4d and Redshift extensively in their promos. I wish I paid the 7200€ on a pc with some serious graphic card power. The only reason I didn't is because I never want to use Windows again. Are you also working on a newer M1/M2 mac?

I was on the verge of purchasing a PC specifically so I could start doing CGI work faster with C4D & Redshift. Personally, I've never had a great Windows experience and have always been a Mac user and my entire studio & business runs on MacOs. So I was super hesitant on dropping that kind of money on a PC which would also be a huge change in workflow for me. I too purchased a fully configured M1 Ultra Mac Studio and have had both good and bad experiences specifically with C4D & Redshift. Literally for everything else, it's been awesome. I've had my share of C4D / Redshift crashes, glitchy renders and slower than I'd like viewport and rendering performance. I always report crashes to Maxon and have spoke with the Maxon support team who have been very responsive. While things have gotten much better over the course of the past year, it's still not a perfect experience, but I highly doubt that Windows users have a perfect experience either. I see plenty of people complain in various forums regarding driver issues with Nvidia cards. All that to say, I'm a commercial photographer that got has been getting into CGI over the past couple of years and I certainly don't know everything about C4D / Redshift. But, in terms of IPR performance, a couple of things that I'd recommend trying if you haven't already would be to set your Redshift IPR Undersampling to 5. Then also go into Redshift Render settings and change your progressive passes to something low like 128 or 256. This should give you a faster IPR in most cases, but obviously will depend on the complexity of your scene. I was hoping to get comparable performance to an RTX 3090 being that Apple directly compared the M1 Ultra Mac Studio to that specific graphics card and featured C4D / Redshift in their promo for this specific machine. I don't have a PC with a 3090 to directly compare my C4D files and render times with. But what I can say, is that the Mac Studio has given me the ability to create some great portfolio work using C4D / Redshift. And when C4D / Redshift are working properly, it's a pretty good experience. Could it be a little faster? Yeah, absolutely. But it's definitely faster than the M1 Mac Mini that I was using prior. I'm not a developer, but my best guess is that it might have something to do with Apple Silicon not having any built in ray tracing hardware. My hope is that Maxon & Apple will continue to improve and push 3D forward on MacOs. I'd really prefer not to move over to Windows if I can help it.

I've had similar experience to the other Brian with my M1 Ultra - more crashes than I'd like, and mostly C4D, some with Adobe products too. I purchased when the nvidia cards were very expensive and it made the cost of the Ultra not seem too bad - if I was buying again now I might go the Windows route (but I do work for Microsoft, so going the Mac route was a new adventure for me...). I don't have a good comparison, but I wasn't blown away by the difference in C4d compared to the 1080 TI I was using before - but overall a nice machine. I've not noticed Renderview lag - can you describe more precisely what you are seeing? I've certainly seen improvements and hope to see more as the Maxon devs get their heads around the Apple Silicon.

@@lunchwithalens In an ideal world, I'd love to be able to directly compare my C4D scene files using my M1 Ultra with 64 Core GPU to a comparable PC with an RTX 3090. Is it fair to say that in your experience with C4D / Redshift, you feel that the M1 Ultra that you purchased only feels comparable to a 1080TI?

@@BrianRodgersJr It was certainly faster, but I remember still feeling a little disappointed. My PC was a decent spec, with plenty of cores and RAM - but I recall rendering something I'd been working on at the time was maybe 50% faster - and in my mind I was expecting 3-4x. General hands-on usage felt much better than the PC though.
