In this video, Chad Ashley shows Nick Campbell how to use the new Random Walk Sub Surface Scattering in the latest version of Redshift for Cinema 4D. It’s super easy to use and creates incredibly realistic translucent effects in your C4D Renders.

For anyone that imported the statue and did NOT get the same amount of subsurface scattering, the issue most likely is that the scale you brought the statue in at is 100 times larger than Nick did, effecting the amount of scattering you see on the statue.

Thanks! Scale really matters a lot when messing with SSS.

As always, fantastic info and easy to understand. I just love how Redshift and C4D is evolving, settings that used to be so complex is becoming so easy now. Great job sharing.

Anisotropy usually means the direction of the light, so positive means it transports the light in the same direction as the light source, and negative the opposite direction of the light source.

It does look great, but I haven't been using it because of seriously higher render times than the legacy sss.

There is a big catch though with the new SSS and GI. It only properly works with Brute Force and with Irradiance Cache it looks terrible and completely wrong. And so far it does not seem like they have any inclination to fix this. The only workaround is to enabled the old Subsurface Scatter GI, which somewhat brings it closer to how it should look but that will loose a bit of the fidelity that the sss otherwise would have. Hopefully we will get a fix to that sooner, rather than later. hey Nick, you are always in touch with the guys at Maxon, could you perhaps bring this up?

Interesting, despite Octane, for instance, does that since a while... is Redshift faster to solve SSS?

I am a big fan and love everything you do but after finally adding Redshift, after years of pushing it off... wow it renders slow even with a rtx3090 its taking a few minutes to get one frame at low quality... I will have to review some of your render tutorials again but so far I have been really disappointed with render speeds... I am coming from a standard and physical CPU workflow with a threadripper though... I will keep playing with it...
