I'm interested to see the comments on this video lol. This video is to show how exhaust components (like a catalytic converter) can reduce rasp and help tone down the exhaust note for your vehicle.
Not everyone will like everyone else's setup. When putting your system together, look at design, materials used and have a budget. Typically you get what you pay for when it comes to sound quality. After installing Motordyne's XYZ Pipe the car's exhaust note definitely had a big improvement, and it felt like it had more mid-range power as well.

You're wrong about vq. Whether v6 i6 v8 The vq is one of the best sounding engines. A simple muffler delete on any vq will let it's natural tone speak to you. It has a trumpet bassy tone and is one of the best exhaust notes on any car with a simple muffler delete.
@hiddenkard3101
@hiddenkard3101 5 жыл бұрын
And the reason your getting rasp is because you've made the exhaust flow too fast by removing restrictions like cats and adding test pipes and y pipe. The hissing, rasp is from the now faster exhaust flow being squeezed by the more restrictive factory mid pipe/resonator and muffler. A simple muffler delete will cure this. And give you deep louder race tone with no rasp. If you think that's its loud then an aftermarket performance muffler will tone things down. Your car still needs a resonator because without you'll get drone. The job of the resonator is too eliminate the drone (the bass that shakes your interior) you can replace it with a less restrictive mid pipe/resonator for more power which in turn will make things louder but still no rasp. If you do full straight pipe. You'll get a really loud, popping exhaust (after letting off), no rasp but also not too bass just loud. You then would fix that with a performance muffler to quiet it down and get a deeper tone. But if you like loud then larger diameter pipes that now match your quicker more exhaust gas flow will give you a deeper tone. Too big of a diameter and you'll get alot of drone and bass. The type of drone that shakes your interior and gives you headache. So it all has to be balanced. You want a catback exhaust, that will fix your rasp but so will a simple muffler delete. Its not the vq or because it's a v6. This is one of the v6s that sound amazing. It's your lack of knowledge and how exhaust gases work. And I'll add that tinny sound comes from now quicker exhaust hitting something and squeezing through for example an xpipe or maybe even an oem ypipe. Tinnyness isn't from the oem pipe thickness. Infiniti/nissan piping isn't thin like a honda so that isn't the cause.

@@hiddenkard3101 Curious then why does Tanabe talk about how their double walled tips help with exhaust note if thickness has nothing to do with it? Also mild steel and stainless steel have different resonance properties.

@@AnthonyJ350 Double wall tips help. That's why most quality tips are double walled. And that's why you should run tips on a muffler delete. I've never thought about that because it's what's done. Ppl don't just weld a thin tube and call it a day.

@@AnthonyJ350 Regardless the hissing/rasp is from fast increased exhaust gasses getting restricted. It needs to be opened up again toward the rear to keep things balanced.

my nissan hardbody; stock vg30, custom long duration cam only for lope (everyone at the mud bogs love the sound) mid length headers (1.75" into 2.5" collector) my custom exhaust system includes about 1" of pipe after headers adapted from 2.5" into a "resonator" about 3ft long @ about 10" diameter back to a 3" pipe running straight to a 3" thrush welded series muffler elbowed @90degrees right after and out the quarter panel. the sound is amazing, all thanks to the huge resonator BEFORE the muffler the size from 2.5" to 10" back to 3" makes a deep echo sound without the thrush muffler (still too loud) but the high frequency sounds are gone, after the thrush it keeps the tones lower while all high frequency sounds are eliminated. the lope on top of the sound makes it imo the best sounding v6 i've heard personally. i'll have to get a video one day of it idling. i figured this out back a good while ago when i was building my samurai i replaced the cat with a large diameter "tube" from 1.5" to about 5" down to a 2" then the muffler (at the time was a modified stock xr650r muffler with hrc tip), it amazed me how deep it made it sound. now i preach the good word about this junk because honestly i haven't found much at all about this online.

Mudasser 350Z Is the drone loud? What's the design of the ypipe and how is the muffler constructed (does it have sound deadening material in it)? I noticed my buddy's car with the muffler delete (factory ypipe and cats) has no rasp but has drone while my car really didn't (even with the Megan Racing ypipe). Possibly the Motordyne XYZ pipe would help, I would order it with the resonator since you already high flow cats.

I had this issue last week when I installed new 1320 Test Pipes to replace stock cats and my car sounded like a two stroke engine. I have a single exit Megan Racing muffler that sounded perfect with the stock cats no rasp at any RPM. But after test pipe install my car sounded horrible at mid-high rpm I couldn't drive with it. I have a stock y pipe, I didn't want to invest more so I went Inside my garage and grabbed my stock RESONATOR and went down my street and put that bad boy back on in the mid pipe section and my Rasp went down AT LEAST 80% like I'm once again a happy VQ35 driver haha

Well they're only $160 so I guess you can be our test mule. Seems like an interesting idea. They looked like resonated test pipes till I saw the picture of the inside. Do they have any dyno runs? I would consider getting a tune at the same time or shortly after. These cars run so much better after a tune after all your bolt-ons are done, especially one like this.

I have full megan racing exhaust with test pipes on my g35 and sound great up to 3k, sounds like shit from 3k-4.5k and 4.5k and over sounds incredible. Worst part is the rasp from 3k - 4.5k. I know I need a resonated pipe of some kind. I'm open to opinions on whether to get resonated test pipes or resonated y pipe or just add an inline resonator between the y pipe and the muffler or just replace the muffler with the inking resonator. I'm leaning towards the resonated test pipes cause my research says removing the factory cats is what makes the raspy or trumpet sound. Ear piercing high pitch wurr. Very annoying. Have to fix. Have a 2013 C300. It sounds great at low to mid RPM's but gets a nasty rasp at high RPM. I have vids of the sound on my channel. It's a 3.5L V6. All I've done to the exhaust is remove all the resonators. I want to keep the low and mid sound but get rid of the rasp at high RPM. Would just some performance mufflers do it or am I looking at cats and adding resonators to get rid of the rasp?

If you still have the factory cats put in a high flow resonator to mellow out the rasp.

@@s_gaming-wo3db I didn't end up fixing it, sold the car not long after this post. I would follow the advice of a high flow resonator, though. Have a question i know this is a old video. But i have a 06 dodge charger rt 5.7. I had it straight piped. Was gutted cats no res no mufflers. Sounded good but then the cats got a hole in them so had them removed an pipe put in. Now the car is was too raspy and pop can sounding. I love a loud car but not that raspy shit. What would u do for it to get rid of that but keep it loud. Would some nice resonators help that or? Thanks for any replies
@AnthonyJ350
@AnthonyJ350 4 жыл бұрын
Yup for sure resonators would help. I would put two small resonators in the area right before the differential. If it's still too raspy, another two small ones near the exit in the bumper. I'm assuming you have a dual 2.5" system, check out part #14148 from Magnaflow. The body of the muffler is only 6" long, I'm pretty sure two of these will still be loud, but really clean up the rasp. Smaller mufflers tend to be louder.

Nope. I have test pipes, aftermartket vhr ypipe, muffler delete, cai and 1/2 plenum spacer and I have zero rasp. It's real deep especially around 2-4k. After 4k it gets louder and has that nice trumpety vq sound. The oem resonator is good enough. They spent many hours on r&d to tune the sound and eliminate drone. A resonanators job is to eliminate drone. Eliminating it make it sound like shit and stupid loud. Oem is the best/sounds the best. Aftermarket is a step below and full straight pipe w/ no resonanator is stupid. In order to be full straight pipe you need headers and resonanator delete. Don't remove the resonanator unless you like stupid loud, blabby sounding and like headaches. I'm getting headers next because Infiniti left some power on the table for 03-06 using regular manifolds. Newer G's use oem headers. Headers on a de G along with test pipes and muffler delete make is sound real deep and aggressive

I read a comment talking about how for a 1/3 of the price you can have a shop custom make an exhaust and it won't have much rasp. I can say I agree with that. On my G, I have Z1 non resonated HFCs running out to a straight pipe with a glasspack right after the Y pipe. Not huge diameter. 3", and it sounds NASTY. Absolutely nasty. Same set up I had on my older G, just didn't have HFCs on the auto G and it sounded almost as good. Cost me the HFCs and an extra 100 bucks, glasspack included.

you get that rasp from the pipes being to large a diameter reducing back pressure. i dont understand why people buy kits for big money when you can have a local place build it for you correctly for 1/3 the cost without the rasp/drone. yea i know these companies claim you gain hp using their scientifically designed bolt on pipes but reality is you will never physically notice 5hp instead you hear the difference making you think its more powerful LOL. your car still sounds raspy and needs longer resonators or smaller pipes to remove it.

@jasoncook5307
@jasoncook5307 6 жыл бұрын
3' stainless is around 10.00 a foot, lets just say 10 feet is used for a cat back. 2 stainless mufflers,resonators are 300.00. so 400 in materials and another 200 in labor and your done for 600.00 +- 100 if you need a x or H and you will be happy the first time with a warranty.
@AnthonyJ350
@AnthonyJ350 6 жыл бұрын
If you can give me the number to a shop in Vancouver that is willing to build a full custom stainless system (from the cats to the rear) for $200 labour plus materials I'll sign up. Most shops are 80 to 100 dollars an hour, so you're saying they'll build it in a couple hours? Anything longer isn't really profitable.
@jasoncook5307
@jasoncook5307 6 жыл бұрын
yes it should take less than 2 hrs to build it and exhaust shops are generally less per hr than a regular repair shop, maby 3 hrs if you have something fancie. if you have silly bends that require cutting and pie welding then thats different. now if your standing there stopping them to ask questions and critique every thing they do then they will oblige you with double the price on labor.
@400Redsport
@400Redsport 6 жыл бұрын
I agree, depending on where you live If you visit the exhaust shop often enough they are also more likely to cut you crazy deals. Down here I bring all my cars to one place, after I brought the same car in three times they got cool with me talking about my cars and now I don't pay labor costs half the time I go. Just find a local shop, not some giant multi location shop.
