Nick Patrick is a retired professional wrestling referee known for his time in WCW and WWE. He joins Chris Van Vliet from his home in Atlanta, GA to talk about how he started his career as a wrestler and then became a referee, getting hired by WCW, turning heel as part of the nWo, what really happened at the end of the Hulk Hogan vs. Sting match at WCW Starrcade 97, was he told to do a fast count or a slow count?, his match with Chris Jericho where Jericho had one hand tied behind his back, being part of the WCW Invasion angle in WWE, teaming with The Dudley Boyz against Mike Chioda, The Rock and Y2J, the art of taking a ref bump, why he believes WWE doesn't highlight referees anymore and more!

Chris has this insane talent to get people excited about speaking about their passions and steering the conversion without making it all about himself. Yet STILL managing to show and engage his own excitement and ask great questions. I'm so happy I stumbled onto his channel.

Wow, an hour & 25 mins. What a treat! I guess it's safe to say that Chris' platform is the place to be for anyone who's been in the wrestling business should come on here and share their story. Chris is a highly respectable interviewer whenever he conducts these interviews.

I used to watch wwf and wcw & as a kid i used to despise nick Patrick as a character. but hearing and seeing this interview, he has inspired me hearing great background insights into how things went down. id like to personally give heartfelt respect to the troubles he and his family is and has gone thru. I loved the referee vs referee match, that's one of my best memories of the invasion era. was sad to hear the other side of the buyout, all those behind the scenes families facing tough times. I follow you on big ol' Facebook, and i came to this channel because you pointed a link in one of the fb videos recently. such a great interview.

Man wrestling is so nostalgic for me and seeing Chris do this is awesome. I always feel like I missed out in the 2000s bc I had a chance to go to wrestling school for free and never did it. I regret it to this day.

So what im getting from this so far is Hogan and Bischoff screwed Sting thinking that it would make him look bad in the end(bc Sting got a little out of shape when they had him not wrestling for a year....what did they think was gonna happen) but instead its one of the biggest things fans point to that kill the legacies of Hogan and Bischoff while one of the things that makes Sting look good lol

I was backstage, and I was watching an interview with Kevin Nash on the truck (they wouldn't let us into the arena until Nitro was over) Nick comes over standing next to me in plain clothes smoking a cigarette. I turn and look and I am like "Oh $#!+, Nick Patrick." Super nice guy to talk to. So amazing. I only saw like 3 wrestlers (Jericho, Rey, and David Flair) so talking with Nick Patrick really made my night.

Eric Bischoff doesn’t get the credit he deserves for starting soo many of the 90’s wrestling trends. Like the referees becoming a big part of the show instead of just being referees. Not to mention, the boss becoming the heel. The NWO really created the attitude era. DX…..

What makes the Starrcade finish even more silly, is the fact that they had Sting win (almost clean) at superbrawl two months later, so what’s the point?
@Matt-cr4vv
@Matt-cr4vv Жыл бұрын
Because there never was a point of it. Bischoff and Hogan finally came clean about Hogans impact on the finish of the match. It’s kinda the story of sting honestly. He never got a true long run with the title. Sting is a six time WCW champion but the total length of his reigns is 251 days. It just sucks that they invested a year and a half to have this guy be the top dude and then didn’t follow through. But the reality is Hogan tanked it.

People still talk about Starrcade 97' because it just doesn't make sense. It makes no sense to screw Sting and still put the belt on him at the end of the night. I'm sure Hogan didn't want to lose clean and wanted a visual pinfall, but it made everyone look stupid. Blaming Sting for not being mentally ready makes no sense because they still put the belt on him so the excuses don't make sense. The only thing i can think of is Hogan wanted to ice Bret as soon as he arrived and he was willing to sacrifice the biggest main event in company history to do it. Bischoff agreeing to it is just idiotic though.

Great interview. I have to be honest. Until I watched this interview I couldn't stand Nick Patrick. I disliked EVERYTHING about him. From his look to the way he did his 3 counts with that hand flapping motion he always did. Oh it bothered the hell out of me. I was always a WWF/WWE fan since childhood (now 41) so I'm sure that had much to do with it. I will say that after watching this interview, my opinion of Nick Patrick has Completely changed. Sounds like a good guy and decent human being. He was just Really good at his job making me hate him. I wish nothing but good things for him and his family. Great Interview. (as always)

He always says that but the reality is he did what Hogan told him to do because everybody knew Eric didn’t have the final word - Hogan did. Eric has taken a ton of the shit for it through the years but on the NWO Bio they finally came clean about Hogan using his creative control. The truth is Hogan told him to count slow and that’s all that matters. He could’ve talked to Eric but if Higan wanted a slow count then a slow count was happening.
