I have the same table that my wife and I bought over 20 year's ago. We let "friends" stay in our house while we were overseas and made it look like it was used as a work table. I'll be back in the country at the end of the year. So this is what I'm going to do. We habe only seen pictures and is one of the many things that had us upset. Question: I want to refinish a solid oak table too, that will be subject to direct sunlight because the dining room has tons of windows. Spar varnish is super UV resistant but is soft and scratchable while polyurethane is a great hard scratch resistant sealer but not UV protective. Both are oil based but different chemistries. Can I apply the poly over the spar without it separating?
@AroundTheHome1
@AroundTheHome1 5 жыл бұрын
I have honestly never mixed two different finish coats. I don't think that will work. I think that it would probably coat but then chip off easily if you did that. If I can be honest for a second, I think you are just over thinking this and worrying about the sunlight too much. You say the table will be in the dining room, and even though it will get a lot of sunlight, it's not in direct light like if it was outside. The newer polyurethanes are better about not yellowing then the older ones. Simply put, if it's an indoor table then use the polyurethane. Thanks for watching. @@AroundTheHome1 That was my suspicion as well, that the hard coat would eventually chip off the softer more flexible one underneath. Coincidentally yes, the table does come in contact with direct evening sun through a large sliding door for 2 to 3 hours a day during the summer if the blinds aren't closed and is partially responsible for the fading and peeling of the original finish. I'm doing this as a birthday gift for my mother and she refuses to move the table elsewhere, haha. I've decided to use General Finishes Oil and Eurethane with a lot of coats. A little spendier but will probably hold up better than the cheaper Minwax poly without breaking the bank. We bring the kids over often too, and they put that table through what my brothers and I did as kids so I think it'll do well. Thank you for your input!

It's actually a Polly with a yellow tint. That's what they use. The reason why it looks like it's peeling is because of the tint they put in the poly. I know a lot of people with those type of tables and they have the same problem

Why not use stripper before sanding to get most of the old finish off?
@AroundTheHome1
@AroundTheHome1 4 жыл бұрын
You can do it that way, but I figure if I am going to sand why use stripper too. If I am going to use stripper, then I am avoiding the sanding. But because I wanted to take a little off the surface of this table to take out some dings, I just went straight for the sander. I saw another video where they did some light sanding on the table top to break the first layer of lacquer and then used a stripper to get a majority of the old stain off. Do you think this would be a good technique for someone who’s 1) not super comfortable using an electric sander and 2) doesn’t wanna spend hours having to stand and actively sand verses being able to let a product sit and do the work for me.
@AroundTheHome1
@AroundTheHome1 4 жыл бұрын
You can use a stripper instead of sanding, sure. But, it's not always as easy as you make that part sound. Strippers all have a certain amount of time that they work then have to be cleaned off and re-applied. If you wait too long the stripper just dries up and then, depending on the type of stripper that you used, cleaned up. Then you have to start again. I had some neighbors that went that very route. Now they were doing the entire table and chairs so it was a bit harder then just the table top. When they used the stripper they did not clean it off good enough between coats and ended up making quite the mess. Then they just gave up and threw it all away because it became just crazy. Again, if you are just doing the top, it is a lot easier because you don't have to clean anything out of groves and such. So, I guess my point is sure. Using the stripper is just fine. Just make sure to fully read the directions and follow them to get proper results. Thanks for watching and don't forget to stop by our website for many more helpful videos. www.greatwhiteninja.com

Can you use a random orbital sander to sand a herringbone design? Will it scratch any of the design as the grain changes direction due to the design.
@AroundTheHome1
@AroundTheHome1 7 жыл бұрын
If your table has a herringbone design then it's most likely a laminate inlay. This is very thin and would take an expert hand and a very fine sandpaper to not damage that with a power sander. The random orbital sander would work good, but it would be dangerous to use because you could easily sand too much and destroy the table. I normally recommend hand sanding on any laminated wood.

Well, for me to give you an answer, I have to ask you a few questions first. The chair that you are sanding, was it stained or painted first? You want to paint it with acrylic, but do you want it antiqued or distressed? That will also tell me if you want a primer, by your desired finish.

Not familiar with using lye. I have used citrus based paint / stain strippers and found them to work well. Personally on a table like this I like to just get the sander out. I normally only grab the stripper if there are multiple layers of paint on something..

Sounds like you have a handful there. And of course the fact that this table is a veneer and not solid complicates things. First I need to know if you damaged the top layer of the veneer or is it still in tact, or mostly in tact. Then we will go from there.

@AroundTheHome1
@AroundTheHome1 7 жыл бұрын
I opened the table up so that I could get all the edges around each leaf of the table. I also didn't want any piece to sand differently. Sometimes when you have a table top that opens and put pressure where the leaves connect they will slightly push down and then create an imperfect flat surface. That will leave a tiny valley and it will not sand properly.

@AroundTheHome1

Awe, the hard part. First of all there is no perfect tool for everything, don't let anyone tell you that. Those rounded, trimmed areas are going to need a combination of tools. You could use the random orbital sander on some of the flat areas on a slower speed to keep control. Oscillating multi-tools generally have a triangle shaped detail sander attachment that is good. Sanding sponges are also good for this because the can take the shape of what you are sanding. And of course just sand paper. Those areas are going to require a lot of hand sanding. So good luck on your project.

Using a random orbital sander is the best for a table like that. Always be careful if it is solid wood or a laminate or inlay. With a power sander you can sand through those thin layers.

Question for you... I want to refinish a kitchen table this has been badly abused. However, I have 2 small kids and a huge family that comes over. They are all notorious for leaving glasses to sweat on the table, which leaves horrible rings. Someone I met said to put a marine finish on it. Is that possible?? REPLY
@AroundTheHome1
@AroundTheHome1 6 жыл бұрын
Carrie, thanks for watching and for posting your question. Let me tackle this one item at a time. You said someone mentioned using a marine finish. That is kind of a broad statement. Standard oil based Poly-Urethane can be considered marine grade for flooring after 4-5 coats vs the standard 2-3 coats. I just means that there is enough sealant there to withstand constant water. Here is a great link from Wood Magazine that should help you out. www.woodmagazine.com/woodworking-tips/techniques/finishing/water-resistant Also, don't forget to stop by our website for more great videos on just about everything. www.greatwhiteninja.com

Jessica, I do see all my comments. Though, when you comment on a comment like your question about the wood conditioner I may not see them, and they are almost impossible to find to answer. So just FYI, just because it is an old video, a new comment is a new comment and easy to see. Ok, now back to your questions. That part that I have on my sander is actually a piece of vinyl hose that I bought in the plumbing department of our local Lowe's. And luckily it worked with the shop vac hose. Unfortunately, many sanders do not come with an adapter for the shop vac. I think that they all should because it is so much better then just that little collector bag. And for your question about the wood conditioner. It helps keep the stain from streaking or getting heavy in certain spots. It is normally used with softer woods like pine and birch. Not used as much on oak. And that just depends on you if you want to use it. If you do just apply it before your first coat of stain and follow the directions for how long to wait to apply you stain. Hi, I have a solid oak table I'm getting ready to stain with general finishes gel stain in gray. After sanding, do you use mineral spirits? Or is it ok to just apply the gel stain? I've watched so many different videos and everyone seems to do things different. I just want to get the beat result with my table. Thanks for the informative video!
@AroundTheHome1
@AroundTheHome1 6 жыл бұрын
Amanda, thanks for watching. While it is not necessary, it is a good idea to wipe the table down before stain. I normally use lacquer thinner though because it is much stronger then mineral spirits. That way it can cut any left over finish or other contaminates left in the wood. You said that you were going to use a get stain. With my experience with gel stains they do not require anywheres near the prep that traditional stain does. But it never hurts to get the prep done really well so that you can get the best results. My only caution it when sanding be careful that the top is actually solid wood. There are many that look like solid wood but are actually a laminate and you will sand through it very easily. You might carefully test an area first. If you find that this is the case then with get stains you should be able to actually lightly sand the table top, not taking it down to bare wood. Then wipe it down lightly with lacquer thinner to remove contaminates, not all finish and stain. Then, with most get stains, you can just apply it then over the old stain and remaining finish. Traditional stain has to penetrate the wood to take and if old stain is there it either won't properly penetrate or the old stain color mixes with new stain. The gel stain can actually dry on the top layer of wood. Anyways, I hope that this helps you out. If we are assuming or knowing that the top layers are a laminate or an inlay, then stripping isn't a bad idea. I took my random orbital sander to this table because I knew that it was solid and I didn't have to worry about cutting through a layer. If you hand sand your table it will take a very long time. Lowe's has a citrus based stripper that works real good and doesn't have the harsh chemicals or odors.

You will still need to sand with a fine grit sandpaper after the stripper, but the stripper will take off all the hard stuff.

How would you go about sanding the base/legs of the table?
@AroundTheHome1
@AroundTheHome1 7 жыл бұрын
With a lot of prayer and a bar of soap, because you will need to wash your mouth out before you are done. No really, a lot of patience because most of it will be by hand. Loose sheets of sandpaper, sanding sponges, and possibly a small electric detail sander. And that's the honest truth..

I actually just did one similar to this, legs, base, tabletop, leaf, etc. The trick I found for the smaller details of the base was using a triangular file, then doing cleanup with some 60 grit sandpaper. Just beware...it was a 5 day project for the sanding.

This table is actually all solid wood. No veneer at all. If yours is veneer then you need to step back the sanding so that you don't sand right through it. I would suggest maybe using a stripper and a fine sand paper by hand.

@AroundTheHome1
@AroundTheHome1 8 жыл бұрын
+Elizabeth Hutchison after the first coat of poly goes on it is pretty rough. You need to especially sand after the first coat. A good rule of thumb is for sanding after the first coat is around a 220. Then increase the grit amount in the later coats, like 400 for the next one then 600 after the last. I was using a random orbital sander, but on the later coats you should sand by hand and sand with the grain of the wood.

I'm ready to refinish my table now. Is it necessary to stain it again or just clear coat it?
@AroundTheHome1
@AroundTheHome1 7 жыл бұрын
That depends on the color that you are wanting. Some people will just clear coat it for a natural look. Depending on if you are using Poly or Spar Varnish will also make a difference. Poly is very clear, but most Spar Varnishes will add a little yellow to it and bring more color to the wood. Hope that helps

I went back and watched this one and realized that I didn't tell anyone the color. I guess I didn't because that depends on your table color, not mine. I think that I used a golden oak. I re-finished the sides on this table because they were a bit rough, but it did add a lot of work. So to answer your question, yes I think that you can get away with just doing the top of the table and it looking good.

Now that makes it a little harder, doesn't it. The only thing that I could tell you is to very lightly sand it to be careful not to damage the paint. But enough to roughen up the clear finish so that you can apply a new coat of Poly over it and allow it to properly adhere. It won't help with any dings or dents, but will clean up the scratches. hi there. I have a table that is painted black but I want to remove the paint then apply a stain. So I would just sand all of the paint off then apply the stain right?
@AroundTheHome1
@AroundTheHome1 7 жыл бұрын
On a painted table this could potentially be dangerous because it is very likely that it is not solid wood. It would most likely be plywood or even a veneered particle board. Sanding through it may damage the surface and reveal material that will not stain like solid wood. On a table that was originally stained many times if you look from the right side you can tell if it is ply-wood or solid. At least you know that the table was able to take stain nicely. If you are determined to try and stain this table I would go to your local paint store, or hardware store with a paint dept. and find a good paint stripper. Use that first so that the majority of the paint can be removed without digging into the surface. Then you can carefully clean it up with a fine sandpaper.
@phuk8865
@phuk8865 7 жыл бұрын
Nathan Cox thank you. When you said it can potentially be dangerous would it be because of an exposure to something or it would damage the table?
@AroundTheHome1
@AroundTheHome1 7 жыл бұрын
Most of the time the veneered finish is extremely thin and once you go through that, what is underneath will not be a nice, stain-able material. Unless you know the history of the table and knew that it was all solid wood, then I would just move very slowly and carefully. Honestly, if it was me doing the table, unless I knew that it was real solid wood throughout I would not try to remove the paint and stain it. There are a lot of materials that they build furniture out of, and stained furniture has to have a higher grade of material to take the stain like solid wood. But you can paint just about anything.

If you were really set on doing this I don't want to completely turn you away from your project. But I have to be realistic at the same time. If you really wanted to do this the only thing that I could honestly recommend would be to use a stripper and then a fine sandpaper to finish it up. Maybe just start with the top. And just see what happens. But you would need to be ready to accept that fact the table might not stain well and be ready to re-paint it then. Again, knowing how furniture has been made for years, I would not try to stain something that was painted.

I need to get a sander there is no way I can do it by hand! I have arthritis and my table is about your size maybe a bit longer mine is square . I know it is all real wood just don't know what kind, it's one of those older tables where the top half has a cutting board look while the base and legs were white. and I got it used and I've had it 15 years now so it's really showing it's age, since I use it as a cutting board (probably not supposed to lol) but I keep putting it off because I don't want to do all the work. and I never could figure out what color stain I wanted it - I think I like the color of this table after it's sanded, that light pale brown color - does stain come in that color? lol

What grit sandpaper did u use? Redoing an old sentimental table of my grandpas so don't wanna mess it up. I used zipstrip to get varnish off. Amd its almost white again now just needs a light sanding b4 refinish. But also have another solid oak table I'm gonna do, it looks like it just has stain on it. Original color underneath was nice too, but they messed it all.up so wanna get the old stain off that oak table aswell, dont have no polyurethane on it by the looks of it. Thank u! Just need to know what grit sandpaper to use. Some say 80, then 120, then 220 on finish. But i stripped most off so mite only.need fine stuff to finish thx sir.
@AroundTheHome1
@AroundTheHome1 7 жыл бұрын
I can only give you a general idea on that since I haven't seen the tables. I will just say again be very careful in case the tables are veneer and not solid. You can easily sand right through the veneer. If you have already taken the poly off then skip the 80 grit. What you have there is a good suggestion for solid wood furniture. It's what I used. Since you have the poly off start with the 120 working with the grain. Then move onto the 220. After the new poly is on start with 220 and move up to an even finer grit to get a really nice finish.

Yes, you do sand in between coats of poly. The first coat especially. It will pull the grains up and will feel very rough. If you really want it to shine then do 3 coats of oil based poly, 4 if water based. And increase the grit of the sandpaper as you do. It would be best to use like 440 and 600 wet sand paper for the last two coats.
