I went through this video twice and may I just say that you are a superb teacher. I really hope that you continue to make youtube content. I honestly believe when these videos catch on and people start throwing your name out for go to training videos, that you could become a very popular youtuber in the sim community. The fact that you know how to teach, you are a real world pilot, and you fly simulators... There is no reason why you cant have 500k + subscribers. Then you throw that sweet accent in on top of it.. I would gladly pay you for your sim training, it's really that good. This Hotstart TBM900 series that you're doing is going to net you a lot of subscribers. Anyway, thanks again. I look forward to your next video.

Thanks for your nice comments. I started flying simulators before the World Wide Web really existed, and getting extra aircraft involved shareware disks through the post. I was flying real aeroplanes before KZbin - trying to learn real procedures for simulation involved a lot of research and reading. There are a lot of sim channels now with people showing you *what* to do, I hope to try and show you *why*. Basically, it’s the the channel I would have wanted to watch myself 25 years ago. I’m glad you are enjoying the series.

Hi Graham, You are simply brilliant. I've been struggling with MSFS and their TBM 930 and then came across your Dundee circuits. I tried to emulate what you were doing and immediately found that OBS does not work in MSFS. Also it's a real struggle to trim their plane and the whole flight model is off too. Add to that one of the bridges is missing and you can image the disappointment. I bought X-Plane 11 because I first came across the G1000 in the MSFS 172 during the alpha and watched flightsim481's G1000 tutorial. On returning to MSFS I found that its G1000 was very incomplete, so started flying the 172 G1000 in X-Plane. Now I've found you and the Hotstart TBM 900 so it's back out of MSFS and back into X-Plane! Your video series is quite outstanding and I hope you will build a following which will allow you to make many more. I'd place you in the same class as Squirrel and Doofer911. Thank you for your time and effort.

Very kind Chris thanks - yes X-Plane is aiming to provide a G1000 simulation that can be used for Instrument training. It has some weaknesses, but compared to the FS2020 version X-Plane seems much better. The OBS mode is really useful, and the HotStart TBM is one of the few aircraft to simulate the air load on the flight controls so the aircraft "firms up" at higher airspeeds simulating the increased effort required to move the controls.

Looking at the Jeppesen chart and Navigraph FMS data you would really think you have to be at 4000 for ADN 26 DME... 😕 And I like the way you switch to HDG to intercept the ILS. Yes I don’t know where that “At 4000” comes from. I checked back 10 years and it’s always been At or Above 4000. I’ve got the GTN750 trainer on my iPad and it shows At or Above too, so I really don’t know. Anyway incorrect data is also a problem in real life, that’s why we check what is loaded against the charts.

@ReflectedRealitySimulations
@ReflectedRealitySimulations Жыл бұрын
Thanks, and sorry for the delay replying. Yes unlike most charts, the UK AIP charts list obstacle clearance height rather than the useable minima. Cat 1 ILS approaches have a system minima of 200ft, so use the greater of TDZ Elevation + OCH or TDZ Elevation + System Minima. The Jepp charts show proper useable minima, and gives 415ft for this approach.

@ReflectedRealitySimulations
@ReflectedRealitySimulations 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the nice feedback. Interesting question as different people do it different ways. For me, I look at height and calculate mileage as it makes sense to me that way. 10000 feet to loose, x3, I need 30 miles. You can also do it the other way. I have 30 miles, x3 = 9(0) = I can loose 9000 feet. For me this is harder to do mentally, and I know my altitude exactly and can only guess my track distance. For you can also divide remaining distance by 3 which is the reverse of the first calculation. They are really rules of thumb rather than precise calculations, so whatever works easiest for you - everybody is different. Hope that makes sense?

Excellent videos, I thoroughly enjoy the videos and learning more about the TBM 900....question(s), 1. I do not see any indication on the alpha-indicator for color indications of the AoA, could this be a Vulkan limitation, as the lift-up window/screen is blank/empty, no color indication visible upon lifting of the lid/screen....2. for whatever reason, my version of TBM900 does not allow me or does not show the ILS LOC upon CDI selection and the AP does not intercept the LOC in APR mode, even though the ILS frequency is in NAV 1. I've tried many locations and did the Glasgow to Aberdeen flight several times, everything works well LNAV and VNAV wise from departure to arrival and approach activation, however, I do not get an ILS IDENT indication in NAV one and therefore the CDI does not show an active LOC, I do get the GS indication, but no LOC....any advice would be appreciated, like I've mentioned, I've several ILS approaches and I get the same result everywhere, no LOC on CDI and no IDENT next to ILS FREQ on NAV 1....I'm flying latest XP11 and latest Vulkan....thanks and much appreciated.
@ReflectedRealitySimulations
@ReflectedRealitySimulations 4 жыл бұрын
Hello Stephen, really sorry for the delay replying. Yes the alpha indicator is a Vulkan issue, and I believe the ILS issue is related to the navdata version. If you use updated Navigraph data that could be the issue. I believe there is a beta version available that corrects both issues, or for the nav data if you use the 11.00 format that should work for now. Glad you've been enjoying the video series.

Graham, an outstanding series from an excellent instructor. I have taken six pages of typewritten notes from videos 1 & 2 so far. Could I please ask you to clarify something... at 30:35 of this video (#2) you say, "We have made ourselves aware of the importance of keeping those flight mode and initiators (?) in the G1000 in the stand (?) at all times." I am confused by this. What are you referring to here and what do you mean by "in the stand"? Apologies for not understanding your terminology here, which is otherwise crystal clear and easily understood. I am looking forward to taking many more notes, -Steve Haines
@ReflectedRealitySimulations
@ReflectedRealitySimulations 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your nice comments Steve. Flight Mode Annunciators, FMAs, the autopilot modes displayed at the top of the PFD - and the importance of keeping them “in the scan”. We talk about a “selective radial scan” when instrument flying. Keep the instrument “scan” going by looking at, for example, Attitude, Airspeed, Attitude, Altitude, Attitude etc. When the autopilot is on the temptation is to let your scan lapse, but the key to understanding the autopilot is not what lights are illuminated on the control panel, but rather what FMAs are displayed - hence “Keep the FMAs in the scan”. Learn when to expect an automatic mode change on the autopilot, like from VS to ALT when autopilot captures the selected altitude, and check the FMAs to make sure it actually happens. Hope that makes sense?

Great vid in general, but I don't understand why you are activating the inertial separator at 10,000 ft. Most of the real world pilots I've watched fly this aircraft, activate it around 4-5,000 ft, and under 200knts. Other than that tidbit, this is a very nice tutorial series. I'm really thinking about getting the TBM900, and this will help tremendously. Thanks for putting in the time and effort.
@ReflectedRealitySimulations
@ReflectedRealitySimulations 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the nice feedback. Yes in the video I deliberately did it early in an effort to manage workload. A fully narrated single pilot approach with stepdowns can be fairly high workload, so getting stuff like the inertial sep done early is simply one less thing to forget later. I tend to use the start of the approach phase as the latest point to get any systems related tasks done. In airline flying we use the sometimes use phrase “at a moment of low workload” for things that do need to happen, but don’t specifically have a trigger point - basically if you’ve got nothing more important to do. In my opinion the TBM is one of the finest aircraft available for any simulator, so it’s well worth it! Hope you enjoy the rest of the series - Part 5 is probably my favourite.

Hello Graeme, Are you using a yolk or joystick while recording the TBM videos? Also, with trim for take-off, should the rudder not be trimmed all the way to the right to the green marking as large amounts of right rudder need to be applied to counter the engine torque? I see you only trim slightly to the right of centre. Do you use rudder pedals as well or just the joystick to yaw? Am really enjoying the TBM videos, perhaps a RNAV or ILS to minima's would be interesting to see.
@ReflectedRealitySimulations
@ReflectedRealitySimulations 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Colin, I use a joystick only, no pedals usually. Yes on the real aircraft the rudder trim would be in the green for takeoff. On the model this is not necessary, and neutral or slightly right of neutral is sufficient. Yaw is the hardest axis to get a balance between being usable in the sim, and precisely accurate. Yaw control on small aircraft is almost all by feel and a whole lot easier than in a desktop sim. Full motion simulators also struggle with accurate yaw sensation, when taxying around they can make me feel seasick! RNAV approach is planned for video 6 with a go-around from minimums.

I have a problem with the Hotstart TBM 900 as follows: When I enter a Localiser frequency into Nav1 ie 110.9 MHz for 26L EGKK and select Loc1 on the CDI the entry goes green but the code for the Localiser is never shown as it should be, and the green line never shows any cross track information. Although the Nav 2 shows the correct VOR code when the corresponding Frequency is entered ie 114.00 Mhz for the UK Midhurst VOR shows Mid correctly and navigation data is correct. Hello Michael, at the moment the release version has an issue with navdata. The data format changed with X-Plane 11.50. If you’re using Navigraph you can use the older format, not the new 11.50 data. I believe there should be an update to the TBM in the not too distant future to update it to the latest navdata standard and all will be well again. Hope that makes sense.

What is the reason why you put the autopilot in HDG for ATF? Does the G1000 not automatically switch to the ILS frequency when it approaches? Thanks
@ReflectedRealitySimulations
@ReflectedRealitySimulations 4 жыл бұрын
The HSI mode and autopilot will only swap from GPS to LOC when the current waypoint, the waypoint the aircraft is navigating to, is the Final Approach Fix or “faf”. In this case the faf is the database not coded as ATF, but the waypoint afterwards, so the intercept would may work correctly without selecting a lower altitude than desired. This is a common issue with the G1000 presentation, you can see the automatic swap attempt and then fail to capture during video Part 3, so I always recommend doing an ILS intercept in HDG mode. Hope that makes sense.

Hi Alessio, I show this on my first video (Part 1) on the climb out of Glasgow. The G1000 navigation logic by Laminar is fairly crude. It will only try and fly a 30 degree intercept on the inbound track. In this case 088, -30 = intercept on 058 degrees. That intercept won’t work for you as it will take you beyond the target waypoint. This is exactly the problem I show in the first video. The real G1000 should work better, but as I said always have the GPS Bearing pointer showing, and if the aircraft isn’t doing what you want, do it manually with heading.

@@dvirshany For the TBM I mainly watch Steveo videos, he floats way longer than you. Granted you don't hear the stall warning but if I recall correctly, in some of his video, i've heard the warinig: airspeed just prior to touch down but i could be wrong. Also I noticed that he likes to flare with 15

On most aircraft a fully stalled landing is not really a good idea, though it’s fine on an nice day in a light single. Add some gusts and crosswinds and you don’t really want to be floating. The gear and brakes only work on the ground! What instructors are attempting to demonstrate is the correct landing attitude and to make sure students don’t accept landing flat, but that message is lost behind the “always land stalled” advice. For any landing it should be on-speed, correct attitude and aim for exactly where you need in the touchdown zone. Also, I see a lot of sim videos with some landing tool that rates the landing based on touchdown vertical speed, and I think that’s a very bad way to rate landings. On speed, in the touchdown zone, correct attitude is all that matters! The aircraft manual for the TBM shows an approach speed of 85kts and touchdown at 78kts at 3186kg. My video series is intended as a progression, we’ll look at the alpha gauge in video 4 and 5, and yes, the approach can be flown faster and the landing slower, but I’m trying to demonstrate a technique that gives precise, repeatable landing performance.

@@ReflectedRealitySimulations I met with Nils Alegren and his Caravelle sim back before pandemics were being taken seriously here - learned I shouldn't land an airliner the way I land a glider IRL :) Keep the speed right and fly it into the runway, whereas in a glider you stall into the ground. Good learning moment for me.

Exactly that. A lot of the time spent learning to land a bigger aircraft is un-learning what you’ve been taught! If you look at a minimum unstick demonstration during certification test programme the aircraft takes off while dragging the tail on the runway, the lesson being you can’t stall an airliner on the ground (Except the original DH Comet I think). Therefore holding off the landing means a tail strike is the likely outcome. Fly it on, every time.

Excellent video as always Graham! With a small(-ish) plane like this, could you also please demonstrate how to do an IFR pickup and cancellation in the air? Maybe even with Vatsim controllers. Also in regards to the G1000: The X-Plane devs are always very keen on fixing their product, so please file a bug report with them. I'm sure they'll integrate your feedback into the sim! dev.x-plane.com/support/bugreport.html

Thanks. Airborne IFR pickup isn’t really a thing I know about. European IFR (especially U.K. General Aviation IFR) is quite a bit different from the USA, as the short video coming this Friday is intended to demonstrate. I haven’t flown on Vatsim for about 15 years. The last time I was told off by a controller telling me in an irate tone “I have been calling you for some time” when he very clearly hadn’t! Haven’t been back, although I keep meaning to look at PilotEdge. I’ve fed back a number of issues to LR, with varying degrees of success. They do appear to have fixed a big G1000 issue I reported a year or so ago, but unfortunately there is no way to track the progress of the report so you spend ages writing a detailed report and never hear anything. I think with Laminar’s G1000 it’s about expectation management - it’s not intended to be a perfect replica of the real thing, just to work “sort of” like a G1000.

@@ReflectedRealitySimulations PilotEdge is very good. They have a two week free trial. Only drawback is it is only West Coast of the US. The do have guaranteed coverage of their operating hours.

@@ReflectedRealitySimulations Thanks for your reply. What a bummer your experience with Vatsim is. Maybe give it another shot? In my past 9 years there I've never had such an encounter. Maybe you could fly in Germany, every controller there is very friendly and absolutely top notch qulity wise. With the new voice codec Vatsim has since a couple of months it's incredibly good. Over the few weeks the all time records of users connected at the same time have been broken multiple times. Thanks for your feedback to LR. It helps every XP user. I'm not sure if it would work with the Hotstart TBM (I know only the far inferior Carenado TBM) but there is a a Garmin addon that goes a lot more in depth than the default XP ones (RealityXP Garmin GTN 750). Maybe that is something for you.

Maybe I’ll give it another go then, glad to hear it’s still going strong. German controllers are universally helpful in real life too. I’ve been looking at the RXP GTN series, and playing with the GTN iPad trainer, but I just need a good aircraft to attach it too!
