Lives on the Registry is a growing collection of stories about Human Beings whose lives have been touched by overreaching sexual offense laws. Many of these stories will focus on the lives, loves, and struggles of people trying to move forward following a sexual offense conviction and placement on a public registry. You will also see stories about families dealing with that registry: spouses, parents, and children of registered persons who face challenges of their own.
We want people to understand that there is hope for those on the registries and that most of what is assumed about registrants is a myth. We want the general public to know they have nothing to fear from a registrant who is simply trying to rebuild his or her life. Registrants are ordinary people who have found themselves on a life-long journey seeking redemption and forgiveness.
We hope you will be moved by the human beings whose stories you see here. If you feel so moved, join NARSOL and help us make a difference!

My ex husband Gary is getting out of jail in April of 2023. He is forced to be put on the registered sex offenders list. He was sentenced 12 years. He is having to start over from scratch. No home, no anything but a duffle bag of clothes. I am the mother of the victim. I wish that Gary would not have to go thru the registry at all he paid his dues to society. All I can do is pray that he will be able to get a good job so restarting his life will be a little smoother. We hope to write a book about his / our story. To clarify the how and why but also to help others who think about falling into the same patterns as Gary to prevent lives from being destroyed what I call pure evil. Molestation is a much bigger problem then most realize. The registry I think should be for repeated sex offenders only or if they pose a threat to society by being a child predator for example.

The registry was originally intended for the purposes you mentioned, but it has continued to expand to include many who pose little threat to society. We encourage you to write your book because prevention is key to reducing these crimes.

NARSOL and other organizations are working to stop the registry through the courts, legislative action, and education the public. It is difficult work, but with the support of others, we can make a difference.

I am torn regarding this conflict. I have known people from my mother, sister-in-law and the mother of my son who were victims of sexual abuse by their fathers. In 1942 at the age of 13 my mother was rushed to the emergency room with a torn uterus and almost bled to death. She always claimed it was a miracle that she was able to have children but I'm not so sure... I'm not sure if it was the Stockholm syndrome but each of these women had a close relationship with their fathers later in life. The ripple effect was long-lasting and I doubt they received the psychological help they needed. Their abusers were never held accountable. In 1997 while experiencing major depression, post-traumatic stress, alcoholism and prescription drug abuse I was sexually inappropriate with my eleven-year-old daughter during a summer visit. Fondling and inappropriate touching. Six months later she told my ex-wife. I wish I would have received the help needed prior to my offense because there was no help for me afterwards. No Second Chances. I have long since completed my sentence and paid my debt to society. With the sex offender laws in place life has not gotten any easier. From what I understand my daughter received the help and counseling needed to go on to lead a productive life. We have been estranged since 1997, which Hurts the Most, but I am thankful she was able to break the cycle. I know I have been forgiven but that forgiveness is not for this existence. For now I will live with this but I am looking forward to the day when my debt will be paid and I will be at peace. My point is get help for psychological issues before it's too late.

Asking for forgiveness and seeking amends is an important step in recovery programs like 12-step. Consider joining our Social network. Others in your situation participate. There is a Sunday night group, similar to Fearless meetings. Good luck.

The real way to get things done is force congress to limit term limits to about 6 to 8 years for all that way the life time of being a congressman or senator won't stop you from voting on things that will cost you re-election. Like if you vote to end the registry, there will be at least 10 people trying to get your job saying look at this person want to let sex offends to be free.

You raise a good point--it is difficult and asking a lot to have legislators vote for a rational modification of a registry law.
