Yes. The answer to his first question is (in her case) that it's deliberate and malevolent. An attempt to shift the national consciousness and control the narrative and rhetoric. If anyone dug into their handling of the department, the cuts to staff (and resulting backlog and, therefore, resulting accommodation costs), and the reversal of several fast-track schemes that would allow us to process claims faster (as per Germany wrt Albania) then they'd see how every problem has a cause, and the vast majority is due to those in charge. I'm left wing. I live in an area of the UK where the population has remained constant since WW2 (but older, on average, so with a smaller workforce) and we have job vacancies galore and staff shortages. We actually need immigration for our economy in my part of the country. But if I was right-wing, living somewhere that the population has increased a lot (like the SE) , then I'd still realise that whatever the Tories say about fixing this issue, their actions in government don't seem to be the ones of someone trying to fix it. They have these weird, dubious schemes (Rwanda) but they've undone the basic parts of the system which used to deal with these issues better, A cynic might think they are purposefully letting it all happen so they can then point at the symptoms (people in boats), talk tough about fixing it, getting voted back in (somehow!) and sitting on their hands again. It's either that or utter incompetence. And you find that through most of the departments. The right wingers ought to stop listening to what they promise and start looking at how they govern, and the results of that governance. We should be able to find some consensus (outside the Tory loyalists) between left and right and that consensus should be ''these clowns can't run anything'' and the change between now and when they came to power should indicate that to even the most ostrich-like.

The technique is well established. Identify a group as being a threat to citizens. Talk up the rhetoric on them and raise fears and hate. Describe them as other, as lesser and them imply they are sub human. You are then able to imprison them just for being members of that group. The best analogy I can think of is shutting the door on the shelter once you and your friends have got in. What every person who supports this policy should remember is that the vast majority of our ancestors either recently or in the distant past were immigrants into this country. The problem in the UK is that only 4 per cent of asylum applications from people crossing in small boats are processed in a year. Refugees do not have to apply for asylum in the first safe country they come to under the 1951 Refugee Convention which the UK is a signatory to. It is also a fact that France has more asylum applications than the UK and in terms of asylum applications per 1,000 head of population the UK comes 19th in a European league table. France has also offered to set up a reception centre on French soil for the UK to “process” asylum seekers, but the UK government has snubbed the offer.

Spot on yet again James. An 'illegal' act is only that where there exists a statute that the given act is punishable as a crime. International Law permits asylum to be sought in a safe country where the individual has suffered harm or is likely to - which includes not only war, but threats of harm to self or community (by whatever means that might occur). Which part of that is hard to understand ? Sure, one might need a visa to STAY in a country for an extended period, but that is a process which can be followed (during a detention period) then either enabled or denied according to the evidence presented by the asylum seeker. There's no way it should be criminalised UNLESS there is evidence towards that being the case - i.e human trafficking and/or being a financial migrant specifically to access state benefits with no intention to work.

the only way people can criticize the numbers of people crossing the channel in boats is by demonising them! And that's exactly the strategy people adopt when they dislike something they can't do anything about!! People are so unhappy and I wish they'd just admit it instead of moaning at other people!

The Tories believe that it was "legal" to invade Iraq but it is 'illegal' for Iraqis who subsequently lost their livelihood to seek refuge in Britain. Better for them to seek asylum in Germany or France although these countries did not participate in this 'illegal' military action against Iraq.

Like I said before, this has former Aus prime minister Tony Abbott's fingerprints all over this. What the Tories want to do is what we already do to desperate people here in Aus. It starts by calling them illegal and overstating the number. Tells you to be afraid and that asylum seekers are the reason you are afraid and unhappy. As long as you don't blame the Tories. My advice? Blame the Tories
