The only reason we are talking about this is because the Home Secretary was in danger of losing her job for repeatedly leaking secure documents, and to distract from that went into parliament and threw red meat to the Tory voter base. If our children could, get a decent job that pays reasonable well, could obtain and afford a mortgage and be able to pay that mortgage, could obtain a council house or reasonable rented accommodation. Then the UK population might be more accepting of these ‘immigrants’ and asylum seekers. As it stands they can’t. They’re stuck in the family home in their twenty’s and thirty’s waiting for ther parents to die and leave them either a home or the necessary capital to set out on their own. I was going to answer you but, Paul Gibbon, answered almost the same i would, there is no reason to target the immigrants as the ones to blame. Even if immigration was hurting us as citizens, these people are not trying to hurt you in anyway, and if we have to think that way, we would need to consider many others issues, you could think the same about a person that comes from another city, just as english as you, one that comes from another region in the country and got the job you would otherwise get. Or if you moved and got a job, it would be you getting a job that another person from that area would have gotten. This is offcourse an outlook on live that only leads in one direction. Lovely comment. Here in Andalucia the Ex--Pats are the English who refuse to try and learn a bit of Española, and consider the Spanish to be foreigners. The immigrants, (like me) find a warm welcome as soon as we try to assimilate. If only the same could be said of England ... This morning I spotted a guy on my lower terraces cutting the lush grass in my irrigation channels, for his rabbits. (Not pets ...) I wandered down for a chat, and introduced myself . He´s my neighbour, a Gitane, and we talked of the possibility of exchanging my avocados for his potatoes. This Englishman´s castle happens to be in Spain, and we do things differently here. I´d hate to be an immigrant in England.

Should we take every Albanian that wants to come to the UK just because they want a better life? Every Syrian? Iranian? Eritrean? We can't house the whole of Africa or the Middle East just because they 'want a better life', how is it the burden of the UK to bare? How is it fair that young, healthy, fit men are able to come to the UK, because they have the means (somehow) to have paid £3000- £5000 to people smugglers but those who desperately and genuinely need it can't? I'd argue that anyone who can afford to pay that to criminals is NOT a genuine refugee, but an economic migrant. Just because "we're not as high" as other countries in arrivals does not make it 'RIGHT' that people are illegally entering the country. My grandmother came here from Cyprus in the 1960s on a work permit, my partner is a Croatian who came to the UK on a work permit in 2013, asylum seekers who can afford to pay thousands to illegally cross the boarder spit in the face of all the hard working immigrants who jumped through hoops to come to the UK legally. Furthermore, the UK needs to get tougher, introduce a Zero tolerance policy for anyone granted asylum, if they commit a crime, deport them.

Alp Mehmet, the current chairman of Migration Watch said in an interview in 2013 with the BBC that he arrived in the United Kingdom from Cyprus in 1956 when he was aged eight, but unable to speak English. Cyprus of course was part of the commonwealth meaning he automatically had British citizenship in those days, but the law has since been changed meaning that if he hasn’t come here in 1956 he would no longer be a British citizen. Kinda like what they are trying to do to the Windrush generation

One in six born overseas. Why am I getting cross about that? Not cross but sad. A statistic that makes me realise how poorly managed immigration into this country over my lifetime is one of the reasons the very nature and cultural fabric of British society has changed for the worse and the country is now comprised of many people who do not share our values or beliefs and largely, though there are exceptions, choose to live in ghettos with those of their own faith and background. Assimilation to them is an unworthy concept.

We did not implement the optional restrictions on freedom of movement because we wanted to counter the supposed France-Germany axis in the EU by courting support from some of the other countries, many of which want no restrictions on their people to move to the UK. The same motivation, in addition to strapping us more tightly onto the US foreign policy priorities, drove our enthusiastic support for the eastward expansion of the EU - more eastern countries joining would theoretically dilute the influence of France-Germany and those countries would naturally follow the lead of the UK wouldn't they? As it turned out, not at all. As usual, our own miscalculations are always blamed on other people.
