In South Korea, to maintain a ready fighting force, all men between the ages of 18 and 28 are required to serve at least 18 months of military service.
For 70 years, those who refused for religious or personal reasons were sent to jail. Nearly 20,000 men have been put behind bars, the vast majority Jehovah’s Witnesses.
But now there is a new alternative for conscientious objectors; they can instead apply to work for three years in prisons as cooks, janitors or civilian administrators.

@@MaximGhost The accurate view to have is to avoid war, I am from the United States and my government has caused a lot of damage around the world and to its own citizens domestically with endless military actions, I therefore oppose the actions of NATO and advocate for complete military drawdown. America's bases around the world have made the world much less safe while costing billions to taxpayers, and the eastward expansion of NATO directly caused the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and now the United States is supplying weapons that will just make more people die unnecessarily. And it is true that wealthy leaders don't fight in wars. Zelensky, Vladimir Putin, and Joe Biden don't shoot each other when they go to meetings with other world leaders, but these types of figures are willing to let those in poverty kill each other, men around the world should not accept being slaves to politicians.

Yes, they work 200 hours per month and get paid $500(600000won). Even the wage has been increased a lot thesedays. 5 years ago conscripted soldiers were paid $100 per month. This is a slavery not a military service

it's not serving the government as much as any volunteer army, all soldiers that go on foreign deployments have to volunteer, if not you stay at home defending, which i think is justified, and especially when we have North Korea like 30 km from our capital i think it's 100 percent correct to at least give us Basic Combat Training and be reservists, we have to defend the country when at war, South Korea is trying to prevent another Korean War where we got pushed back across the whole country within a couple weeks because our army was untrained and nobody knew how to hold a gun

Honestly, if you have such mandatory military service and conscripts would be subject to bullying and being abused who wouldn't want to be in that situation, but if such mandatory service is humane, then atleast it wouldn't have been at bit attractive,knowing that you won't be subject to such cruelty. Complicated question. The U.S. Army's conscript-based force did well in WW2, but soldiers were in for the duration. There was also a bit of a learning curve. The draft Army that was successful on D-Day was a much different than the one that got their butts handed to them at Kasserine Pass two years earlier. If you're a small country like Israel or Switzerland or Finland, potentially facing an existential threat (the Swiss during WW2 and possibly during the Cold War), you may likely need a large body of decently-trained soldiers in case of a full-scale war, in order to be able to sustain continuous casualties over a prolonged period, which requires conscription. This is something that may well be beyond the capabilities of a highly-trained, but much smaller, professional force. For the U.S., the all-volunteer force (AVF) was a solution to the draft Army's breakdown during Vietnam, an unpopular and seemingly endless war. The AVF fixed the problem of the unpopular draft, but then inadvertently created another. The volunteer Army that won the 100-hour war against Iraq and liberated Kuwait in 1991 was the best trained and most capable in our history, as the post-Cold War drawdown had only just started. That was the high point of the AVF. The low point has been the last 20 years of continuous deployments for COIN operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, resulting in the loss of much of the Army's conventional fighting skills. In contrast, during this time frame, the Russians and Chinese kept their focus on training for the conventional fight. This 20 years of unending war happened because only 1% of the U.S. population currently serves in the AVF, including the Reserves/National Guard, which means there was no political pressure to "bring the troops home." Absent a major threat like the Soviet Union, an AVF can be sent on wide range of missions, which may improve skills like nation-building, while degrading others, such as conventional warfighting capabilities, which take significant time and resources to develop. AVF's are also much more expensive, mainly salaries and pension benefits, than a conscript-based force, which reduces the number of troops you can have on active duty, due to budgetary constraints. Again, absent a major threat, this may not be an issue, but isn't fighting and winning against major threats the main reason for an army's existence? Lose that fight and you may lose your country. Just ask the Poles, whose country disappeared for over 100 years, when it was conquered and divided up between Russia and Germany. In summary, an AVF is typically better trained and more capable than a conscript-based force. It is also smaller and more likely to be sent on adventures to far away countries, because of its volunteer nature, to conduct operations that have nothing to do with building and maintaining its core competencies, potentially weakening the force for the "big fight." An AVF with tighter controls on its deployments may be the answer, but once a military is separated from the larger population, due to its volunteer status, the temptation is always going to be there to send it off to slay dragons elsewhere the world, again because of the lack of political consequences back home. This is perhaps best summed up in a 1993 exchange between Secretary of State Madeline Albright and Joint Chiefs Chairman Colin Powell, regarding use of American military force in Bosnia, where Albright asks Powell, "What's the point of having this superb military you're always talking about if we can't use it?"

Based on my experience as a South Korean conscripted soldier, I doubt it. If there is no fear about North Korea could invade South and try to devastate everything South Korean have made, conscripted soldiers of South Korea might refuse to fight. Everybody in Korea would agree with the notion of conscription is much similar to imprisoning. My military service is over, yet I still obligated to server military and I personally doesn't want to fight if South Korea try to invade the other country. I will fight against North Korea for the sake of my beloved, though.

The British military refused to re-instate conscription, they deemed it would actually hurt the UK's military strength, because modern warfare is much different to WW2 era warfare; it's much more technologically complex. The British Army already rejects a lot of candidates, they want good intelligent soldiers; conscripts would be useless and would just get in the way. They don't want drafted teenagers who don't want to be there, in charge of million dollar missiles and other complicated military hardware. Look at the research in autonomous weapons, the army would much rather a robot that followed orders to the letter, never made a mistake, and could kill a target with one shot in 1 microsecond, rather than a panicking teenager spraying a 30 round magazine and hitting nothing. This Korean conscription is all about face. If this conscripted army/navy is so great why didn't they help with the MV Sewol instead of just watching it sink?

@@mikesully110 In a limited engagement, technology and training certainty plays a decisive role, which is where a professional army really shines. The Falklands conflict and Desert Storm are perhaps the best examples of this. In an extended conventional war, such as one on the Korean peninsula, South Korea is going to need lots of bodies, to fully cover the battle space and quickly replace the high casualties they will very likely suffer. This is where you need a large reserve system, built on conscription, that can rapidly replace personnel losses. The Yom Kippur War is a very good example of how quickly men and equipment can be lost in a high intensity conflict. It is notable that the Finns kept their conscription system in place while most of Europe shifted to all-volunteer forces at the end of the Cold War. Now the Swedes are bringing back conscription as well. I'm sure both the Finns and Swedes will make every effort to employ technology to the greatest extent possible in a future fight, but it is notable that they want bodies as well. If I were a small country next to a much larger neighbor, particularly one that has invaded me in the past, like the Finns and South Koreans, I would like to have as many available options as possible.

As long as women are not required to carry out compulsory military service while unjustifiably enjoying the same rights as men, it is every South Korean man's duty to dodge it. Israel has had conscription for both sexes since 1948. Norway and Sweden, two of the few European countries that still have conscription, extended it to females in the last decade and other countries are discussing doing the same. South Korea must conscript both sexes. Women need to learn that equal rights imply equal duties.

The Korean birth rate is getting lower and lower and one of the reason is that women find it hard to commit to a family because the job market isn't mother-friendly. Koreans as an ethnicity might go extinct in a few decades, so pushing for women to give up 2 years of their youth when the optimal window to have a kid is already limited would push birth rate to a negative. Even the ones that would have considered to be moms might consider su*cide instead.

What about letting them serve in some kind of civil defence? If a war breaks out, they will be needed for firefighting, giving first aid to injured civilians, evacuations, securing food and water supply, etc. That could be an alternative service, vital in a war, and without using weapons.

When I left school, we still had a mandatory service here in Germany. Personally I had no problem with joining the military, but for people who had religious reasons we had an alternative service. It mostly happened in hospitals, kindergartens or other social institues. Maybe this could be an option for korea too.

They don't want a US-allied capitalistic nation directly on their border, they want North Korea as a buffer. I do not have a great solution for this situation either, but one thing I am certain of: Saying when you refuse to learn how to handle weapons, wars all over the world will stop? That, sadly, is nonsense. Humans as a whole will always have wars, humans are just made like that and it will never change. Single people or small groups can change ,but never the majority of mankind. Especially when the situations around the world get worse, more people get poor, etc, wars will arise, have always, will always. As a Korean men who have served 2 years in the army, I have never thought of myself as a proud soldier serving for the country. I always have thought myself as a slave, working 250 hours per month and get paid $100 for my labor. Even more than 50% of Korean people are not doing their duty of defense. 10% of men were exempted because they are ill or they are son of rich politicians,doctors, and CEOs. 100% of women were exempted just because they are not men. Only less than 50% of Korean are working like a slave for 2 years, losing their gold time in 20s. In spite of their service, korean politicians and feminists even mock their duty. This is why men in Korea does not think duty of defense is holy but think it is just a bullshit

The unforgiving nature of combat requires not only individual skills, such as rifle marksmanship, but also the ability to operate as a team, under fire. Move, shoot, communicate. That takes years of working together as a group, to build unit cohesion and trust. Throwing a bunch of strangers together at the last minute to fight, even if all have some level of previous military training, is a much less effective way to conduct combat operations. It's one thing to be willing to die for your country, it's entirely different to needlessly sacrifice yourself.

As a young guy who's been a citizen of the US since day one but wants to live in rural South Korea for the rest of his life, I gotta say I don't look forward to the draft. But with current tensions building between Russia, Ukraine, the US and other countries during these times, it looks like I'll end up having to deal with a draft regardless. The beauty of South Korea amazes me. Not as beautiful and breath-taking as the beauty of Japan, but still amazing. The people are pretty cool, the language is kinda easy to learn, and I could probably go on and on about what I like about South Korea. Car culture in Korea may not be as awesome as car culture in Japan or the US, but heck it's still pretty nice. But to be back on track, if it's intended for me to serve whether I'm still here in the US or over in South Korea, I will try and do my best to serve, despite my high blood pressure and overweight problem.

If they don't have a crazy neighbor, there won't be a need for a mandatory miltary service. NK has a large army. SK is trying to match it, so that in eventuality that NK invades them like it happened before, they won't be overwhelmed. Military service isn't about serving the government, it's about serving the people. It's not about violence, but about defense. If there is a problem here, it's about the military culture of violence inside which stems in bullying, which is also rampant outside military.

I wonder if people who are against the consriptions happening around the world, understands that the army for those countries is mainly there for deterrance purposes other than a few countries who are actively making wars so that their war industries and territories can be expanded. The North remains a significant threat and the South must be fully prepared in case of a conflict. The last time I checked, The Supreme Leader was not yet subscribing to peaceful coexistence. Your opinion is just based on your misunderstaning of Korean militrary system. As a korean men and who have served Korean army for 2years, I am always thankful to soldiers guarding my people. However, still the conscription system of Korea has lots of problems. First, it is unfair that only men are conscripted for 2 years getting paid less than $2 per hour for their labor. If all of Korean people were conscripted, there would be less complaint by Korean men. However, Korean women are not conscripted for even a second. Also they do not pay extra taxes for duty of defense. This means at least 50% of Korean are doing nothing for theri duty of defense, while other 50% are working like a slave for 2 years. Try to put yourself in the shoes of men serving for about 2 years. Do you think it is a fair system? Second, there are some men getting exemption by bribing civil servants serving in ministry of defense. Korean men are classified to 5 ranks by their physical traits. Rank 1 is the men with no problem in their body, and rank 5 is people who are getting exemption because of ill physical traits. By bribing some civil servants, sons of politicians, doctors, CEOs, and celebrities have manipulated their ranks to get exemption. By bribing, people who are destined to get rank 5 have to receive rank 4, which makes them to serve for social service agent for 2 years. To sum up, more than 50% of Korean(women + sons of rich people) are free riding the duty of defense. Only poor men who does not have power are serving for 2 years getting paid less than $2 per hour. Is there any problem in Korean men's protesting for their rights? Finally your logic is absurd. Let's assume that you are paid $1 while others doing same work are getting paid $10. Is there no problem just because you are receiving at least 10 times more than people doing same work in Africa? If you compare south koreans to north koreans, I could compare you to people who are living in poverty. All I see in your comment is a well fed Westerner who have not served for even a 1 second in military disciplining other people

First, I'm not Korean so I defer to you as to the accuracy of my thoughts here... my opinion is that perhaps women should be included in the "draft" such as apparently happens in Israel which I think is a decent comparison considering that these are two countries who both have imminent threats bordering them. Second, there should be an effort to decrease the corruption of which you speak around rich people paying their way out of service. I do not think any system will ever be perfect, but adding women to the draft and attempting to seek out and cease as much corruption as is possible sounds like a good start - along with increasing the pay for those who serve in the military. There is no excuse for paying a low amount to the brave service members defending their country and also if pay was increased there would be less resistance to serving. Please let me know if you think my thoughts are accurate, I'm actually travelling to S. Korea next month and I want to ensure I understand the culture and people.

In 2020 the conscription rate for men was 90%. This means that other than the exempted 10%, all men are conscripted as a soldier or social service agent. This crazy rate is a big problem because it is related to Korea's low fertility rate, which was 0.92 in 2019. Due to the low birth rate, there are less men healthy enough to get a rank of 1 to 3, but Korean military requires at least 300,000 soldiers of rank 1 to 3. This situation makes people who are destined to get rank 5 get rank 4 and people who are destined to receive rank 4 receive rank 3. For example, I met tens of soldiers with severe obesity, rare eye disease, or herniated disk in the boot camp. These guys evidently had physical problems. However, they were conscripted due to the lack of soldiers. The real problem of not conscripting women is that ill men have to be conscripted like the soliders I met in the boot camp. Therefore, by conscripting healthy women, ill men will not have to suffer from conscription. Second, it is almost impossible to decrease the corruption because their manipulation of rank is very difficult to find. (There are even secret brokers and agents in this field.) Therefore, in my opinion, the best solution of conscription is to increase the payment for soldiers, which is possible. South Korea wastes billions of dollars in military corruption. Generals buy simple USB from their relative's company paying $1000, which is insane. By decreasing corruption in military budget, Korean government can increase wage of soldiers. Ideally, every man should contribute to the defense of the nation, as we see in Israel, Switzerland and Finland. In reality, it's difficult to maintain this absent an ongoing threat to one's country. Once the Cold War ended in Europe, nearly all countries shifted away from conscription to volunteer forces. Absent a major war, I don't believe the U.S. will ever return to a draft military, because it would be so unpopular. But, building a large and capable reserve force that can be mobilized in wartime is a lengthy undertaking. There are ongoing efforts to do this in Ukraine, due to the current threat of invasion from Russia, but it's really too little, too late, to build cohesive and capable reserve units. The Finns were one of the few European nations to maintain a large reserve force following the end of the Cold War, and that puts them in much better shape than their neighbor Sweden, which is racing to rebuild its capabilities. That's really the ideal - a conscript-based force that serves two years on active duty, followed by 20 years in the reserves, in order to build a wide-ranging capability that can quickly be mobilized in an emergency. Yes, a young man loses two years to the military, and has to stay engaged part-time for the next 20 years, but so are all his male friends and colleagues. A shared service by all to one's country.

I am a proud veterans of United States when I hear and see stuff like this I think it’s time for United States pull out why should Our boys and girls go there and fight and die for someone who won’t even fight for the country we have a history of doing this Afghan was enough they didn’t have a Will to fight for their freedom I have had enough South Korea is a rich and powerful country they can handle their own business I don’t mind fighting or dying for freedom if the next man is willing to do that for his own Country when I go to war to fight for someone they must first show that they have the Will to fight for the home country it’s that simple🤔😷😎🙏🙏🙏

To be fair, South Korean miltary sevice can suck alot. Soliders get paid below minimum wage, and many rich people take back doors (bribe) to avoid conscription, so it's understandable why many Korean men finds miltary service unattractive.
