The one you call the archer is the other way around. You have to pull the string, that's why it's called the archer. I've been using the expander for 31 years now.

I recommend buying robert barabans expander, bands are trash in comparison to this expander. and you dont need to buy like 5 levels of bands which will also be expensive as this expander. I also fcked my shoulder a little bit and expander is awesome for strenghting shoulders

If you can transform your body with pushups, situps, chinups like was is done in the military. These chest expanders & other old school devices which are shown on golden era bookworm which work for anyone willing to put in the effort. I was really progressing well with my expander. Same Baraban one. Maxed out at seven springs on many movements. Got a crazy busy field job with long hours, and then a shoulder injury from a mtb crash. Gonna rehab with my expander. Miss that burn! Just need a normal job now, too...

That was a great demonstration.. It's amazing how many exercises you can do with a spring set.. I remember when I was a young kid my father had a set of springs in the house and he would grab them every once in awhile a do a few exercises with them and then they would just lay in the closet for the rest of the year..

I have the same chest expander thet Reg is using in the photos. I bought it unused but the box was molded and probably forty years old. I bought it as a curio, but one day I started doing sets with it and that thing really enhanced my upper back strength.

With a bit of DIY there are a lot of possibilities, how about a 30 inch straight bar with some eyelets welded on to attach the springs for 2 handed variations and a block of wood something like a 3 foot sleeper with a clip or short bar bolted on to attach the springs, then you can stand on the block and do curls etc or put it on its side against a wall and do seated rows.

Interesting. I've always done the archer exercise the other way around - kept the extended arm extended and use the other arm, the bent arm for the movement- adduction - drag the scapula of the bent arm, to the back - like an archer would, when using a bow, as an upper back/posterior delt excercise. I started using chest expander more than 27 years ago, when I first started resistance training at the age of 13. It was my father's chest expander, that he got as a young teenager in the 60s. What I liked about it, it wasn't the spring one, it was elastic rope one, which I consider better of the two - when it's the proper product, not the cheap Chinese junk. The benefit is, you can actually step on it in the middle - you lay the chest expander on the floor, horizontally, step on the ropes in the middle (or with a wider stance) grab a handle in each arm - you can do deadlifts. Another exercise is a chest press - you put a towel over your shoulders, so that it covers your upper back, shoulders, upper arms. You hold a handle in each arm, with the elastic rope behing your back, around your scapulas. And you do a chest press. The towel is there, so that the rope doesn't hurt your back, shoulders, upper arm. I got my own vintage mitre ajax chest expander from the 60s, I still use it, but it's the spring one, so it's less versatile, than my dad's original one. I also use the "Body by Jake tower" system, you put on your door, just got extra heavy ropes - the red ones - for it, instead of the light ones.

I noticed that some of this exercices made my lower back hurt a little bit, i guess it was because of the traction that ends up applied on that, especially with exercices like the tricep extension. I solve that problem simply by pressing my static hand against a wall or piece of furniture (thus releasing the tension applied to my lower back and transfering it to the wall or furniture). I use the "Fatman's Cable Guide" as a basic manual.
