Here in Europe we only got a version of Game Sack presented by robots since we simply can't deal with living human hosts.

The reason Contra is different, is because of how cartridges were made. When the Japanese version came out, it was based on a newer chip, that handled compression differently, and allowed for a lot more data. They took advantage of this. The game also runs better with less slowdown due to this. Here is the technical reason I found in a google search: "The Famicom version had the advantage of using Konami's own self-produced VRC2 mapper, as unlike in other territories, third-party developers in Japan were allowed to manufacture their own cartridges and mappers for the Famicom instead of using only Nintendo's stock. This allowed the FC version of Contra to have many additional features, such as cut-scenes and background animations, that were not in any of the NES versions (which uses a standard UNROM mapper). "

The most famous change was fixing the spike bug, where the post-damage invincibility didn't protect you from immediately hitting another set of spikes. The number of changes is why many of the re-releases, for example Sonic Jam on the Saturn, gave you the option of which version you wanted to play (as well as the option of adding things like a spindash).

If you want the definitive version check out the 3DS version available on the eShop. It is fantastic and you can play the international, US, and Japanese versions. You can even change the sound emulation from a Sega Genesis Model 1 to Model 2. It is fantastic and the 3D really looks great. The whole game was rebuilt for the 3D.

@@dowingba A NTSC screen won't help you, because PAL consoles and games were changed to 50Hz video output or even video processing frequency (if this does make sense, I don't know the real therm in English), compared to 60Hz on NTSC. Some games came with a software-fix to get the gaming speed back closer to the original, but unfortunately not every game.

I live in Brazil, and Tectoy, the official distributor company for Sega products during the Master System and Mega Drive days, released at lot of games here just changing the sprites and texts and renaming the games after popular Characters in Brazil. Some of the games that I know that have great differences are the following: Master System Turma da Mônica em: O Resgate (Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap); Mônica no Castelo do Dragao (Wonder Boy in Monster Land) Geraldinho (Teddy Boy); Chapolim x Dracula - Um Duelo Assustador (Ghost House); Sapo Xulé: O Mestre do Kung Fu (Kung Fu Kid); Sapo Xulé: S.O.S. Lagoa Poluida (Astro Warrior); Sapo Xulé vs Os Invasores do Brejo (Psycho Fox); As Aventuras da TV Colosso (Astérix); Mega Drive/Genesis Turma da Mônica na Terra dos Monstros (Wonder Boy in Monster World)

So glad you got around to mentioning how we in PAL territories got it rough. With the amount of time and money I've spent on games over the years I'm actually pretty bitter about it, especially as (and I don't think a lot of people realise this) there were still games not properly optimised for PAL right up until the PS2 and original XBOX.
@hansweiss469

Agreed. I personally am still bitter that old NTSC television sets can't directly handle analog RGB via scary cables like most PAL monitors can, but I'm glad I don't have to deal with annoying refresh rate issues.

Okay, you two were right about the final boss theme in Tetris Attack, and Panel De Pon. So, remember the pre final boss cutscene in Tetris Attack? That cool organ music? THAT was the final boss theme in Panel De Pon. The theme used for the Bowser battle in Tetris Attack was actually the boss theme for the semi final boss. Why they changed this is beyond me.... Heck, when I was a kid, I even felt that the cutscene music was a better final battle like theme. On a side note. This also means the "Panic" version of the final boss theme was never used in Tetris Attack.

You forgot to mention the biggest difference in the Japanese version Castlevania 3. It's much, much easier!! Grant's main attack is the throwing knife sub-weapon rather than the short dagger, which changes his gameplay completely and makes him more viable. They are far more crosses and holy water power ups scattered throughout the game, (Sypha can actually get the lighting spell in the pirate ship where you have to wait until the second stage in dracula's castle to get it the American version. Finally, when you die against Dracula, you start at him in the Japanese version rather than having to replay the entire last level from scratch. On a side note, I personally like Panel de Pon more than Tetris attack. I think they got rid of the fairies because they didn't think Americans would want to play as little girls.

David White Did you notice that the title screen of the US version of "Salamander" (Lifeforce) says "Nintend of America Inc." instead of "Nintendo of America Inc.?" It's strange that nobody at Konami nor Nintendo has seen that! Great episode, though! And yes... PAL-gamers did have it rough. But in the end, I am kind of glad that these differences exist now. It makes the world of retro games so much more interesting. Imagine if all releases would have been the same? This episode wouldn't have existed. ;)

Thanks! Actually I didn't notice the typo on the title screen at the time as I was in awe of the star field and fireball comet thing. Now it's one of those "once you see it you can't unsee it" things.
@Ace9921
@Ace9921 9 жыл бұрын
David White The typo was actually corrected when Life Force was rereleased on the Wii Virtual Console and I believe the PAL version corrects this as well, but it is COMPLETELY unoptimized for PAL meaning the game runs slow, is letterboxed and has far lower sound pitch. Also, I would like to make an addition to the differences between Salamander and Life Force in case nobody's done so: Salamander has extra endings depending on the number of continues used. Life Force only has a static Konami logo and no credits with the song Peace Again playing in the background. Salamander actually has credits and different graphics depending on the amount of continues you use.

Nintendo was the main culprit on censoring games. I guess it was understandable since most of us were kids back in the NES days. No one will ever forget about Mortal Kombat. Alot of the games released in Japan were always better than the release of American games. When I got older and read Gamefan, that is when I started to look into importing games and still do today. As Dave said, my little innocent eyes were protected in the US. But Gamefan violated them. Not that I was complaining. :p Oh you want to talk about differences? Try the Parodius series. >.>
@tetrisdave

Yep. Love playing some Sexy Parodius from time to time. Gamefan was such a great magazine. When I visited California back in the late 90's I made it a point to go to Game Cave. I think that was its name. I remember feeling a little disappointed as the ads in Gamefan looked like they had Japanese games all over the place. I also went to Japan Video Game which was a great store. I really liked it.
@AmberShort
@AmberShort 9 жыл бұрын
Game Cave was the name and it was nothing fancy from what I understand There was never one around me though so all was done in mail. I pre-ordered a few things before Playasia ever came to be. I remember Gamefan having alot of weird ads and I kinda had a feeling that some were scams. They let anyone put ads in there. I miss those times. Before the internet, it was fun to get things and learn about them in magazines. I remember getting the PSX magazine with demo CD.. Now you can get demos everywhere and easy. That excitement isn't there. I hope you guys do a Sexy Parodious. I know it might be hard due to the risque matter but most of it is comical innuendo humor.

There was an interview I read, maybe about 9 or 10 years ago, with a high ranking official at a Japanese game developer stating that Japanese gamers were generally less patient than American gamers, and would become quickly frustrated and/or bored if they were unable to beat a game, whereas American gamers tended to spend more time and effort on challenges. I'll try to find it again somewhere online. However, this may explain a lot of difficulty discrepancies.
@ThisIsPete
@ThisIsPete 6 жыл бұрын
This is an interesting comment, because I think if anything the situation has probably reversed today, three years later after you said this. Today, modern Japanese games have tons of optional, missable content (often of a very high difficulty) while Western games are generally designed with the mindset that they want you to see everything as painlessly as possible.
@avideogamemaster
@avideogamemaster 5 жыл бұрын
This happens in between generations too. People from today are not patience enough to play an old Sonic game more than once and often criticize how the games (with the exception of 3) dont have save system. Me as a kid probably have played Sonic 1 over 20 times until I finally beat it, and it was awesome
@dnocturn84
@dnocturn84 3 жыл бұрын
Higher difficulties for western releases during the 16bit age was definitely a measure to counter rental stores. They changed them, so average gamers wouldn't beat a game over the course of a weekend. I've read multiple Japanese developer interviews stating that. This might be a huge generalization, because not all developers of every single video game company said that, but I guess it's not wrong to look at this, as their standard solution. Nintendo (and I believe Sega did that too, but I'm not totally sure without looking it up) even tried to ban video game rentals in the west by lawsuits during the NES age.

There's this game on the Megadrive called D.J. Boy which had a bunch of changes between regions. I've documented most differences I could find on the game's entry at the TCRF wiki, but to quickly sum it up in a nutshell: -Removed intro entirely (but printed the graphics thereof in the manual, in B/W) -Removed graphics from ending, turning it into a boring scroll-text ending instead -Changed the skin colour of the first/last boss -Changed some of the levels, both in layout and graphics

Maybe it's coincidental, but there sure were a lot of games here that could easily have covered a Halloween episode. Splatterhouse, Castlevania, Kid Dracula, and Decapattack? That's a fantastically frightening foursome! That said, it's easy to see why Nintendo moved to change some of the original Japanese imagery from the Castlevania games. IIRC, Nintendo of America had a big issue with religious imagery; I thought I read about these changes in a magazine article once before, though I couldn't cite what it was today. The Kid Dracula changes are new to me, though! Finally, I do find it very interesting that some localized versions of games were made harder, despite the prevailing opinion that we here in the West were sub-par game players at the time. The changes to Contra: Hard Corps stick out to me in particular. That level of difficulty is just brutal, and it's a bit disappointing to know that the Japanese version is a bit more forgiving-- and therefore more accessible to players of all skill levels. I learned quite a few things in this video, and that's a pretty great reward (aside from being entertained). Thanks so much for putting this together; I found it fascinating overall.

Many of the regional differences I'm aware of don't affect the game as much as the overall plot. For example, Bonanza Bros in the US states that Robo and Mobo are agents who test out security systems in the places they "steal" from, whereas in Japan, they're thieves. Obviously, it makes more sense for them to be crooks. Other times, changes are made to alter depictions of certain characters so as not to offend gamers overseas. An example would be in the game Bust A Move (known as Bust A Groove over here) where the character named Hamm is depicted in blackface (sort of) in Japan but internationally, he's not. Lastly, in Japan, they're far more lax on racy depictions of women than they are here. Multiple games sporting nudity were censored (as mentioned in this video). But, it doesn't stop there. In games like Double Dragon and the Adventures of Bayou Billy the women were made to wear more conservative clothing. You can see Marion's panties in the Japanese release of double Dragon, and in the Adventures of Bayou Billy, Annabell's clothes are much less revealing. Those are the ones that spring to mind of the top of my head.

Games in the UK used to run slower and be squashed because our TVs (in the days of cathode ray tubes) were higher resolution than US TVs & ran at a slower frame rate. We usually got US versions of games that weren't converted for our TVs very well. Specific game features I can remember being changed were things like Super Contra in the UK was called Super Probotector and featured robots instead of humans. I don't know why they changed the main characters, but I actually liked the robots better than the human characters. Star Fox on the SNES was called Starwing here and Starfox on the N64 was called Lylat Wars. More recently there were a lot of scenes cut out of the Southpark game for the UK.

I know also the CastleVania game released on the Sega Genesis was called CastleVania: Bloodlines and featured a ribcage floating in a pool of blood on the title screen and had much more gore than in the PAL Mega Drive release (called CastleVania: the New Generation), which featured a ribcage floating in water, less gore and a different death animation for Eric Lecarde (the other playable character). In the North American release, Eric's body is impaled by his spear; in the European version, he isn't.
@TrepeGB

Yes. Gore was often taken out of games for the UK, which is annoying because things like that were decided in Europe not the UK classification board.

That's irritating. But, at least that makes sense. I'd rather violence be censored than language.

I'd rather violence be censored than language and nudity. Although ideally I don't think violence should be censored either,. It should just be given a higher age rating.

This is by far the most interesting episode yet. Censorship and regional differences has always been a very interesting thing of mine. You guys should of seriously covered the Crazy Castle series; oh boy let me tell you how much of a mess that was for regional differences. You could probably make a whole video on it if you really wanted to. It involves Woody Wood Pecker, Garfield, Mickey Mouse, The Real Ghost Busters, Bugs Bunny, that popular European comic book guy...it's just a mess of changes.

Westerners can't be blamed for the swastika having such a terrible stigma attached to it. It's one of those things where it's nobody's fault (except for the Nazis). Also, it isn't only western games that get changed to make it more PC. In Oddworld: Abe Exodus for the PSX the Modokon hands got changed from having four fingers to three to make it look less like the hands of Japanese workers who were unfortunately maimed in their meat plants. Bottom line, every culture can be easily offended by some arbitrary imagery.
@B3Band
@B3Band 9 жыл бұрын
Yeah! Screw those westerners! People in that other region don't get the jokes and references that are specific to one culture? Too bad! The game company might make more money by adapting the game to the people who wouldn't buy it otherwise? Too bad!
