@Mr.A6 Yes , it took less than 2weeks after they cashed the check. I’ve already sent out for a 2nd motorcycle I need a title for. The first was an 2002 Honda cbr600 (successfully registered in VT no title) now I’m working on a 2017 Yamaha tw200. I have a 1968 Honda Ct90 they want that one inspected. Hopefully NJ will accept VT reg. When I go for the transfer.

I have a KTM super motorcycle it is for the street but it has lights but I am going to put the headlight and rear brake light and turn signals but the motorcycle is financed I can register it as you say in the video

I'm guessing this will only work if the person you bought it from is the last person showing in their system as the last owner who many have lost the title. Or you could just write a fake Bill of Sale with anyone's name on it as long as you have the VIN # I'm sure they aren't going to go with just that?

You shouldn't need this process to get registered if you already have the title. Just use the normal registration process in your state.

ive been looking for ways to register my xr400 for a while now.... the only thing im not sure about is if it matter that its a canadian vin number. ive run the number through every checker online that i can, nothing comes up. hell, ive even called my town hall and they didnt say anything about it. i guess ill just have to try it!

Hope it works out for you. The worst that Vermont will do is reject your application. Once you get a Vermont registration, all should be good. I don't know what state you are in, but Illinois is one of the most difficult states to get a vehicle titled in and this process works here (at least for now).

Just ran across this, looking at buying a 2012 bike actually in Illinois but no title...I'm in Oklahoma so looking to get the VT registration then transfer to Oklahoma....I see it's says 15 years old at least for vehicles what about scooters which this is....

There is a good chance it will work to get you a title. I don't know if Indiana will let you get license plates from Vermont license plates.

I think they have to be older than 15 years in all cases regardless of engine size. You might be able to find out for sure in one of the Vermont application instructions downloads at dmv.vermont.gov .

Probably not. Even if it works, you'll have to pay another title transfer when you bring everything back to the Illinois DMV.

Hey bud, so I just purchased a Honda Trail 125 from Georgia... I went to my local DMCV here in NJ to register the bike yesterday, and they're telling me I need a stamp from the seller... I contacted the dealer and they've never heard of that or had to do it before.... So is this Vermont loophole my best bet?

The Vermont process may work for you. I think I would keep trying to go directly through New Jersey if at all possible. Try another DMV (maybe even a private licensing facility if your state has them), research this "stamp" thing a little more, etc. I'd only try the Vermont process as a last resort. Illinois is one of the most difficult states to acquire a title in, if they ever offered a glimmer of hope in a process like this I would exhaust all options first.

Mine is a 1990. Yours likely already has a street legal title. They had an on-road and off-road version. You may be able to get the title in your name using this process if the current owner is on the existing title, but this is potentially a title/ownership chasing nightmare.

I don't know how Vermont will handle that. If it were me, I would wait till I got the real title and handle it through the normal processes in your state. I've only used this process on previous untitled bikes. I'm guessing Vermont will do a nationwide title search before registering the bike to you.

I don't think you will have any success under those circumstances. Post what happens if you decide to give it a try. The owner on the title could really cause you a lot of grief if he ever reports it as stolen.

I think Vermont will reject the application if a title shows up when they do their title search. Everything that I've registered in Vermont had never been titled before (like old street-legal dirt bikes that my grandfather purchased new). I would bet that a 2019 dual sport has a title already. You should run your VIN through www.nicb.org/vincheck and make sure it doesn't come back stolen, then you'll probably have to apply for a bonded title (if in Illinois).

I believe they are 4.15% sales tax and then it would be plus the registration fees. Most states are similar to registration fees.

As I recall it took a few weeks for the paperwork, then a couple more for the plates themselves. I don't think you'll be waiting much longer. (I didn't have to surrender my plates when I coverted it to an Illinois title/registration). Your DMV will be a little confused, but it worked without any issues both times I tried it.

I believe if you send along the info from your purchase you should not need to pay tax again. You already paid it when you purchased it. I decided to go the pa route. Just haven’t gotten to mocking up everything pa needs for pics just so I can take it all back apart and put my normal lighting back. 🙄

This process won't work for you. The process in the video is for bikes 15 years old or older. Their may be a similar process to get your off-road only motorcycle street legalized, but I've never tried it. South Dakota registration+/-?

If Indiana has a process for you to get a title, then do that. Illinois had no process for me to street legalize one motorcycle and an impossibly difficult process to title a home built motorcycle. I only used Vermont b/c it was the only option available.

@@Justdirtbikes I've only used this for previously untitled motorcycles in Illinois. If street-legalizing your bike is the goal, I wouldn't ever get it titled as off-road. This will likely permanently create a record proving it's not meant for on-road use. The process I used in Vermont is only for motorcycles 15 years old and older. Also, it is for motorcycles below 300cc. 16 year old bikes above 300cc can be registered in Vermont using this same process but it takes extra documentation not covered in the video.

Question, normally they require a vin verification to be sent in with the application. At least for certain vehicles/motorcycles. Their site says vin verification are being waived currently with a few exceptions. So I should be fine sending in the application, bill of sale and check for the fees and be good to go? And my bike when searching on nada has 2 values. Low retail and average. The site says to use fair trade in but my bike doesn't list a fair trade in. Ive also heard that they will use low retail in lieu of trade in value if not available. Just dont want them to kick back my papers if I miss something or send the wrong tax amount.

Sorry Jordan, but I don't know if it will kick back under your circumstances. Several years ago I registered a home built motorcycle using the VIN verification process. They rejected the application b/c the frame on my bike was only 14 years old (I interpreted the rules differently than they did). They didn't cash my check and I just filed all the same paperwork the next January and it went through. You shouldn't be out anything but your time if you make a mistake.

As far as taxable value goes, you should be using the actual purchase price from the bill of sale (assuming it's not drastically different than some of the NADA values).

@@tightwadtv3421 Nada low retail is considerably higher that purchase price and it says to use the higher amount. Paid $950 and low retail is $2295 so I calculated sales tax based on the nada. Seller sold cheap because of the bike having no title. One question i now have is the website says to include a printout of the nada value along with the rest of the documents. Did you do this? Id imagine they look it up themselves to make sure everything is correct. And as far as I can tell i don't have to worry about the vin verification as the site says they are being waived as police aren't doing vin verifications due to the virus and whatnot. Im sure that will vary state to state whether verifications are being done or not but vermont must be seeing this enough to state they are waiving them at the current time. Exceptions are salvage titles, foreign titles and temporary registrations which none of these apply to my situation so I should be good to go.

I used the VIN off of the frame when I titled a custom built motorcycle. I can't say for sure if that will work if your frame is already titled. Update us here with details if you are successful (or make a video and post it to KZbin).
