Subaru likes to plop the intercooler right on top of the motor, so the massive hood scoops they use are to keep the car from grenading themselves. Also, they’re prone to massive amounts of heat sink.

DrewLSsix as someone who owns a WRX @Wiggy is correct. There is a top mounted inter cooler that the hood scoop feeds into on the hood. Plus heat extraction holes on a hood don’t force air into the engine bay, they vent air out of the engine bay.

As a die-hard Honda fan and a member of the Gran Turismo generation that grew up idolizing all the Japanese sports cars that we couldn’t have here in the US... man, I really don’t like the Type R. It’s a Civic but it’s absolutely massive. It’s a Civic but it’s terribly expensive. It’s a Civic but it’s so obnoxiously styled and loud. I feel like this car is trying to overcompensate for what it is. The original Type R’s were performance kings but they weren’t so in-your-face about it. I’m not saying it’s a bad car; it really is amazing. It’s fast, *really* fast. No torque steer in a FWD car? Comfortable and user-friendly enough to daily? That’s last bit is certainly not something any other Type R Honda really was, save for maybe the DC5 Integra. But it just doesn’t “seem” like a Civic Type R to me. It feels like a kitted out Honda with the biggest bodykit stuck to it; the kind of Honda you could build after unlocking all the upgrades in a Need for Speed game. It doesn’t act the part of “factory sleeper”, or failing that, a “factory club car for the street”. It’s just feels a Civic that’s bigger than it should be, wearing an even bigger skirt. The way modern car design, trends and safety standards are headed now may mean we never get another raw, tight, and classy factory club racer like the original EK9 and DC2 Type R’s, but regardless, I don’t feel like this was a step in the right direction for introducing a new incarnation of the Type R nameplate.

This is the reality of the automotive industry. Regular Civics are regular cars, they're appliances. Many Civics are bought by young people, and the Civic was designed to captivate these young people, I'm sure you know all this, but I feel like you need a reminder. Honda can't design a new platform just for the go-fast version of the Civic, and they can't make it subtle because they know people won't buy it.

The_Doctors_Tardis DC5 Integra Type R did this. 02-04 models never had foglights because brake ducts were installed in their place. The plastic bits really do take away from what the car is supposed to be though. Makes it seem “fake”.

I drove one of these before getting my Accord. I just couldn't do it. There was way too much of a premium they were tagging these cars at, and it made it not worth it in my book. It's a hot car, for sure, and I'd rather have this over the Focus, Golf R, and the STi. They're all a little ugly in their own ways, but these cars are designed to look a little silly.

Zecrid Nah. The most that will happen with the RDU on the Focus when it overheats is that it will shut off, precisely to prevent damaging itself. And I’d rather have it shut off than grenading.

@@Justin-qe3tj I would definitely advise against a used euro VS the Honda (father in law is a mechanic and I've owned a few nightmares). Full disclosure I recently bought a new full size pickup because I want to haul stuff like a camper, boat, etc. Those typically cost more than the Civic Type R. I'll get the itch again in the future. Maybe I'll pick up a slightly used one as a weekend car. Always have to weigh the toy options!

rambow70 Although that's a good idea on paper, it would still require them to make adjustments to their assembly line to sell another version of a type of car that just isn't very hot right now. Sports car and small cars are both plummeting in sales, so I don't imagine investing more into such a product would make for a strong business case.

rambow70 Not to mention certain things can't be changed much. That engine as he stated, generates alot of heat and already has alot of overheating issues, so it wouldn't be a good idea to tone down the bumper and hood with smaller intakes, because that would only make the issue worse. I would imagine that the spoiler, although on a fwd car, does help to a degree, in fact I believe Honda stated it generates a few hundred pounds of downforce at high speed. Perhaps they could adjust a few things, the roof vortex generators, the odd exhaust layout, and maybe reshape the rear wing and vents slightly, but there's not much else they can do unfortunately.
