the Dutch company is actually called DAF, as in daf(t), not D/A/F, the car division was bought by Volvo in 1970s and incorporated the CVT into their line of small cars (the 300 series of DAF design), later licensed to Ford Europe for the Fiesta and Escort in the 80s. DAF remains a major truck manufacturing company today.

I always figured manuals would go the way of premium option. Now that they nolonger offer an mpg benefit they won't make up the bulk of entry-level cars, and since they don't offer a performance advantage they are becoming rare throughout the rest of the market. This conspires to make the development of manuals for new cars a less profitable venture since they won't be used in many vehicles no matter what. The only way for them to remain is if manufacturers decide to cater to enthusiasts, and that meant it is guaranteed to become an extra cost option. In other words, if they hadn't opted to offer a manual in the Integra as an extra cost option they wouldn't have bothered to develop one to begin with.
@APS_Inc

The biggest contributor to the death of manuals is café mpg requirements and emissions standards, because drivers cannot be trusted to not emit pollution by revving hard or drive properly to get the best mpg.
@ziginox

The funny part about that is, before Subaru discontinued the manual transmission option on the Impreza/Crosstrek, it was available in lower trims. You couldn't get a Crosstrek or Impreza Limited with a manual. This also meant you couldn't pair the 2.5L engine the Crosstrek Limited received in 2020 with a stick shift. And now, since the manual has been completely dropped, the new Impreza RS is left with only the stupid CVT. Absolutely criminal.

@@jeremiahwhan The 4 door Integra was like the 4 door Civic... workhorses and the better sellers to the masses. However to reboot this thing you NEED the 2 door option which made these cars iconic. @Rayrard
@Rayrard 11 ай бұрын
@@jeremiahwhan I don't get why. They do have coupes (Camaro, Mustang, Z, BRZ) so they can offer one even if it has relatively low sales. I went on like 2 minute rant to myself about this. In an era of 8, 9, 10 speed dual clutches and autoboxes, why use a ratio-programmed CVT? It'll do the same thing, wont base the sportiness on an illusion, and wouldn't even weigh that much more. This is lame

I had a '96 Integra, and there was nothing Civic about it. Even with my base model with an automatic, it was short, uncomfortable, a 4-seater only by technicality, lighter, stiffer suspension, less cargo space... yeah, there was never anything Civic at all about Integras. It was meant to be a budget car you could hit the track with, it was never meant to be a casual commuter car. If you drove an Integra, it was because you enjoyed driving, not because you simply had to get from one place to another. The 2012 NSX was a technical marvel, which, whether or not you like the styling, is on-brand for NSX. This Integra is just a slightly redesigned Civic, which is an insult to the Integra name.

The ‘good student who resorted to cheating and got caught’ analogy hit me hard. I missed a months long portion of sophomore year due to an autoimmune illness, and had to take an ‘incomplete’ in a couple courses. This gave me a semester to finish and submit the missing work. For one of the classes, this was mostly editing so that was fine. But another was a writing course and I got lazy. It became clear I was going to miss the deadline. So I let it pass. And pleaded ignorance. And lied saying I’d emailed the missing essays earlier than I did and somehow tried to weave a paper thin story about how I really did have all the work finished within the window. Then the professor emailed me a screenshot of the creation date of my last essay. The data showing the document wasn’t even created until 3 days after the deadline…. My heart stopped when I opened that email. He said basically that he knew I was bullshitting, but he remembered how when I was well enough to attend class I was always engaged and did good work. And that this time at least, he wouldn’t turn over my attempt at trying to lie my way into a passing grade over to the body of student ethics or whatever it was called. I silently sat at my desk, a couple silent tears rolled down my face. Took the F I earned. And signed up for the course again. Online only version. I couldn’t show my face there in person again.

@@milkj.it's underpowered not just because of it's lackluster powertrain, but also because the cvt transmission actually reduces the peak performance on an already underperforming powertrain. There was a 6-speed manual version but they were primarily sold in Japan and barely any were sold elsewhere. with the manual transmission, the car topped out at 120hp, while the cvt version topped out at 110hp. What sucks is that the improvement to fuel economy on the cvt version is pretty miniscule for how much the car had to suffer for it.

Purist rant all you want, for real world driving Honda’s CVT is actually the better transmission pairing for the 1.5T engine. It does a great job of spooling up the little turbo when you need it, being silky smooth around town and getting great fuel economy. Yes it drones and is not very fun if you’re driving with a very heavy foot, but if you’re that person, you should have bought a Type-S anyways.

I got a little excited thinking we were about to get a Type-S video. Honestly, I get WHY car companies put the manuals at the top trim only; they have to “recuperate money somehow” for all of the “effort” it took to put a stick in the car. Albeit in this case, it wouldn’t have been that hard given it’s a Civic in a well-fitted suit. It is annoying that they don’t really put manuals in base models, but I get it. 90% of people aren’t buying a stick. Doesn’t mean I endorse it though. That being said, I do like these. Yeah, they aren’t a 3-door model, but I think it’s a good car. And given the markups on the Civic Si, you get a little more for your money here with the Teggy. It’s a shame they also didn’t bring back that Phoenix Yellow they teased for the Integra at the reveal of this car. Also, that panel 0:42 holy cow 😂

I bought a base 2024 Integra this past July. I wish the manual was available on the base model, as I wanted to experience a Honda manual transmission in a car that was also an upgrade from my 2015 VW Golf 2-door with the manual. Additionally, I didn’t need the extra technology the A-Spec and Technology Package, and I wanted the 17” wheels for a better ride. That said, for the driving I do, I feel the CVT isn’t terrible, and the Integra was a good road trip companion. In late September, I drove from the Boston area to Acadia National Park’s Park Loop Road in Maine and back and had a great time. I look forward to many happy years with it.

Though looking at the 280zx, Z31, and Z32 more closely I actually wish Nissan would offer a weaker motor for attainability. I had a CVT Corolla (not the real first gear CVT) for a bit until a texting teen in an old 4Runner played the rear end like an accordion. I'll give it this. It was smooth. It was quiet and refined in normal driving. It didn't drone on like a JATCO CVT equipped vehicle. And it got insane mileage. My combined mileage was 3 MPG higher than the EPA pure highway figure. It mostly ran like a pure CVT in normal driving, and vaguely simulated shifts under hard acceleration. It was enough to break up the monotony without being so much that it really defeated the purpose of a CVT. Sure, it had a manual mode where it would fully emulate an automatic if you cared to use it, but you had to specifically choose it. The 2GR-FE I have now and the traditional automatic behind it blow that Corolla out of the water, but I do still miss how smooth that shiftless Corolla was in easy normal driving. The 4 banger can't hold a candle to the refinement of the 2GR under load though. The 2GR is easily the most refined engine I've ever driven and likely will be until the day I get to drive a Lexus LS.

It had a K24 that made similar power as this Integra so it sounded good and had top-end power. But it had an 8-speed DCT. The paddle shifters were responsive and it was really fun to drive. Honda clearly replaced the 8-speed with a CVT to cut costs but that clearly doesnt trickle down to the consumer since the Integra went UP in MSRP from the outgoing ILX by $4,000. Honda is clearly gouging consumers and making it look like Acura is making a comeback with an iconic nameplate. Actually, interesting fact about tractors and CVTs, they growing more common on tractors now. Those 24 and 32 gear transmissions are being phased out.

If you're spending this much on a 200hp automatic, you might as well get an Accord 2.0T with 252hp. Get Hondata for $800 and you'll open up another 25-45hp. Plus you'll get a 10-speed automatic instead of a CVT. Accord is another 300lbs heavier, no hatchback trunk but still has a pretty big trunk

2.0t accord is gone 😭 now they are hybrid only. They are fantastic cars, just road tripped one.

I suspect the true reason for the CVT only base cars is because dealers think (and order accordingly, remember you can only buy cars essentially 2nd hand) that only enthusiasts can be trusted to buy the manual. For the rest of the public, they can all be sold a CVT. And the dealer doesn't care what they sell, they only care that they sell. So as long as rationalization happens for the CVT, it's good. The answer to this is to breakup the dealership model, grind it to a fine dust and cast it to the wind. No fun is allowed, only the most common denominators. Another note, with regard to speed (in F1, or WOT acceleration) a CVT doesn't rev to peak torque, it revs to peak power. Because peak power will always make for peak wheel torque when paired with the right gear ratio, which the CVT can always supply.

That shot at the beginning of the video shows body panels slightly mismatched. That set up the review for me.
