Catfish Bait: Mooneye

Kansas tarpon! Also known as Goldeneye here in NE Kansas. They are in some of our lakes but not in abundance. We usually just use shad for catfish baits. I enjoy your videos, down to earth and real. Not like all these KZbinrs with to many sponsors.. I like watching local guys also, just keep it real.. Tight lines!

Mooneye are crazy looking little fish, but the cats love em!! I was losing alot of skipjack off my Foley spoon, until I put a stinger hook on it and it works great!!! Usually will hook them with both hooks.

I don’t think I’ve seen a mooneye since I was a kid on the Mississippi River. I almost forgot they existed! Seems like a great cutbait.

Good info! I occasionally catch them in a cast net. I've never tried to catch them on rod and reel. I might have to try it below Barkley sometime.

Just to let you know my favorite way of catching him was using shiner tails just cut the tail off and put it on a tiny little hook and I caught him over and over againwhen the other guys were using lures and crickets I was catching them 3-2 there one

Hi John this is Mike from Vermont the mooneye is also called a toothed herring so I would assume that it is from the Herring family and by the way you do make great videos

they call them skipjack plenty in Missouri River where. I fish under southomaha bridge Nebraska side, go down 100 yards big cats greenworms, cutbait skippys

John, I have to questions. Can you get skipjack and shad at the same location? I know you usually use a lure for skipjack and cast net for shad. I just was wondering if you could get all 3 at the same location. Question 2. I live in Kentucky and wondering if there was a place around Ashland to catch bait? Thank you for time. Sometimes you can find all three in the same locations, usually below dams. If you are close to Ashland, then the Greenup dam is probably your best bet for getting bait. I have gotten all three kinds of bait from there, and we also catch bass, cats and sauger there as well. Hope this helps brother.

yep, that is where I get some of the crickets from, I also catch them in the cow pastures around me.

I didn't know for sure until I tried for them. Luck of the draw sometimes, throw different baits and see what's biting.

Could you post an update of the river soon I drive a long way to try for hybrid last time I went the water was very low and the paddle and gar were all over by the steps

Hey Keenen, the river is low and slow right now, and the fishing is not great. There are a couple being caught, but not in any numbers (hybrids, bait, or cats). We need a good rain to get the river up and moving. Once we get some rain the fishing should pick up again. Keep an eye on the weather. Hope this helps.

Dunno about that river but I've been fishing the Mississippi and I can just look up the river stage nearest to whatever part I'm fishing. It even forecast the river stage as well.
