Carpenter here! So as you all know decks are made from ply. Due to the glues used to stick that type of ply, the decks are pretty water tight. However the older a deck is, the more times it's had the edges bumped, how much graphic is left ect. The more the glue will have broken down/been worn away allowing water to soak into the board, this doesn't take long at all with an older deck. To save the deck, remove the hardware and the grip tape and leave it somewhere at room temp to dry for a fortnight. New tape and reinstall you hardware and you should be good. Edit: even if your board is brand new you'll still need to change tape, the backing soaks up water instantly and will expand which is usually the culprit for a dull pop. Plus it's always falls part much quicker once it's got wet.
@4sername Жыл бұрын
How do you remove the grip tape? Acetone or sum sht?
@Dorench Жыл бұрын
@@4sername should peel off with a heat gun, then use a little bit of wd40 on a cloth to remove the glue left behind. If you deck if wet be very carefully not to over heat the deck, just enough to pull the tape. Over heating WILL cause a wet to warp or/and delaminate (where the layers of ply separate). You're best off letting the whole deck and tape dry and just remove the hardware come to think of it, then remove the tape. Thats what I used to do, I used to have a board specifically for getting wet, being a carpenter I always had loads of potential grip tape 😂

The deck's wood plys are stacked cross-grain for rigidity and strength. Wood expands across the grain when wet, so the plys will swell in different directions when they get soaked. This will break down the deck's structural integrity (and can cause the board to warp) causing it to lose its pop noticeably. As for the hardware, it'll be ok for a bit but it's best to dry everything off as soon as possible to prevent rust, and hit the bearings with some lube because lube keeps the balls happy.

I’m not a physics expert, but the little I’ve retained from my school years, tidbits from skaters, and common sense, water won’t necessarily ruin the skateboard. It just dampens and ruins the integrity of the board which gives less pop, and since bearings are greased up and it’s a well known fact that oil/grease and water don’t go well together, so it will cause friction in the bearings and make your board ride strange, but they do make lubricants that can help with the latter issue. Plus, it can rust your trucks and hardware. TL;DR: Don’t get any part of your skateboard wet, but if you do, it’s not the end of the world. Worst case scenario you’ll need a new deck and possibly new bearings.

The wood definitely absorbs some water, becomes water logged, weighed down a bit, makes the board more susceptible to cracks, fractures, and overall weakens the board. I'm wondering, if you're quick enough to fish it out, the only part of the board that would realistically need replacement after water logging is the gripped deck, right? (I'm assuming you aren't gonna let the board sit long enough for any of the steel parts to rust). You could probably dismantle the entire board (bushings, hardware, bearings, etc) and give them a clean and let them dry asap before reassembly. You can then reapply any lube, paraffin wax, etc. The deck will probably need replacing, but it's better than having to buy a whole brand new complete. RIP if the water deck has had any modifications like a tail guard/rail guard, those will need to be redones on the new deck. Bearings might only be an issue if they don't have removable covers. Otherwise these can be cleaned and serviced before any water damage sets in, right?

It'll get water logged once it dries. Take that board and snap the tail on the ground with your hands. Then do the same with a new one. They sound completely different. One sounds like wood snapping, and the other sounds like drift wood smacking a bay. It most definitely affects your pop bc the ply sheets are more brittle once it dries.

Well I try and dry it out the most I can then I put some rust remover on the bearings and it usually works

Depends on the board I’ve had some get soaked but I dry them fast and clean the bearings and it’s back to normal

Buy boards with non water based glue.. good for when it trickles a little.. but if you soak any board it’s for the bin.

Depends if it's a resin board like a dwindle distribution it doesn't affect it too much. The old glue boards I believe the glue is water soluble.

Yea, so we can conclude that covering ur board in water is as bad as snapping it, as it soaks in the water it looses its integrity and pop, but how much water is enough to damage the board? It doesnt take much before the deck laying outside in humid or foggy weather to become ruined. From pure experience i learned that it wasnt the razortail on my deck that was the issue, it was in reality cuz i left my skateboard in an unheated garage/shed or in the trunk of my car. So whoever reads this, please keep ur skateboards in a room-temp environment, so ur skateboard stays crispy for longer. I had to learn the hard way...

Im with you on the fact water ruins your board, I've skated several boards and being from Canada I skate them in the winter. Durning the winter months I feel less pop, my griptape loses its grit and it even feels like I loose speed faster. Although salt is probably half the factor for speed, I can confirm it getting wet does mess with the pop and grip

My skate was under the rain the other day, when i was at the skatepark with my friends it started raining very hard, so we sprinted towards the mall across the street. After we were inside the mall i got out some tissue papers that i had in my back pack and started drying the board as fast and as good as i could, so far its not rotting and/or the wood got inflated. (Sorry for my bad english, im not a native speaker)

I’d blow dry and lubricate the bearings, throw the board tail to nose and have it spring up, that’s been my method but the board will never be the same regardless. Best thing is just make it your wet board.

When your board goes in the water you have about 10-15 seconds before the water soaks in deep enough to notice a difference. As other comments said always good to have a rain board tho
