After 2.5 years of asking why I couldn't walk, I understand that it was because my therapist was afraid I'd fall. It's been almost 3 years now that I've been trying to walk. I do have Ataxia and part of my cerebellum removed, this video bridges the gap for me. I now understand what I have to do. Thank you

The term Furniture Walker was never used by any of my physical therapists. And I became a Furniture Walker. My dependency grew and eventually I discovered that there is no furniture between the parking lot and the grocery store. This situation led to my developing full-blown panic attacks just trying to get from the car do the store door. Frozen in Terror as fellow Shoppers looked on. I eventually confronted it because I had to, but it was unspeakably horrible achieving that resolution. My therapists were not as good as you, Tara. I could write a book.

Thanks for sharing Robb! Not sure "furniture walker" is a technical term 😬 But is the best way I know to describe what I see 😊 Sorry to hear about the panic attacks. You are not alone. But I am so glad you didn't give up and overcame the fear! Here is a video I made on this exact issue :) Overcome fear and master any walking obstacle: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nJjYZXSKbL18oNk

@@rehabhqofficial Thank you for the video link, Tara. It is spot on. My problem had a very clear path. It would begin with anxiety, heightened to fear that triggered spasticity, and then becomes a full-blown panic attack. Sort of like finding yourself in the middle of a lake and discovering you don't know how to swim. Your video on overcoming fear will give anyone with the problems I had the comfort of knowing what's happening and real skills for resolving the fear. You're knowledge and expertise is truly exceptional.

Good information Dr. Tobias. I'm guilty of walking with a wide base. I'm a very defensive walker. I'll work on the corner exercises as you suggest. I'd love nothing more than to do a one -legged stand on my involved leg. I'll practice that in the corner. Thanks again for the instruction and the encouragement!

Thanks for sharing your progress! I hope this one will help! Don't give up on the single leg standing :)

In the early stages, I trained well to use a cane to correct my balance on uneven ground when needed, especially when walking on grass, because there is often a possibility of surprise due to the change in hardness, and thus the slope of the surface. I think the angle strategy is very good. Have a nice week.

I really love this video. I find it very beneficial as I still have weakness in my left ankle and want to fall backwards. Thank you Dr. Tobias. Have a great day!

Hi Tara. I never think of furniture and wall hopping. However when I look at door casing all over the house, you can see my greasy finger prints every ware. Also furniture hopping can be dangerous. It is easy to lean on something the wrong way and have it collapse along with you. Towel bars in the bathroom are not ment to hold people. Mine have been pulled out of the wall. Not fun to repair. I am working on breaking my furniture hopping habits.

YES Ernest! Hard for people to understand this until they "mis-judge" the stability of an object. Hopefully for you no serious injuries :)

Thank you. I have reoccurrent inflammatory myelitis and after your previous excercises I can take 2-3 steps inside but need something to hold. Outside i cant think without a cane

Thank you so much Dr Tara Tobias for this superb video, right now I'm working more on balancing exercises. This video is totally related. I tried all of this exercises while watching this video. I found challenging while centering the body mass on single leg. I can touch my unaffected leg's Ankle while standing, but i found its difficult for my affected leg doing the same. Thanks again for pushing me up in my progression after two strokversary

Yes! This training video is totally for me! I have coming quite a ways recently and feel like I have hit a glass ceiling. My daughter gets married in early June and I don’t want to use my cane down the aisle nor do I want to use a death grip on my son’s arm . Then, I want to “pop” up when she appears to the aisle to take her last march as a single woman 💖

Wow this is an extraordinary video for regaining balance and getting past our fears of falling. I really appreciate that you incorporated an activity geared towards activities out of the ordinary day to day routine. Although I am not a golfer, I don't know how you would do this but could you do something in regards to shooting a large caliber rifle, to absorb the impact from recoil and not lose ones balance. Thank you so much for these kinds of exercises to expand our capabilities. Have a great rest of your week

OMG I have been on this journey almost 8 years from fully paralysed to walking but balance is one thing I cannot crack. This one video I SWEAR is the best thing I have seen in all those years. Thank you so much. Where are you based? When I am walking unassisted I want to fly over and thank you in person. ❤

It is not a "belief" because your information is based on research, data, science, therefore it is a fact, we have 'proof' that doing these strategies improve balance, therefore it is not "belief" It is like saying I believe we have a sun in our solar system, some people say we do not, You are informing us with 'facts' not 'belief' Thank you for the videos

I was wrongly given madopar and I lost the balance, walking and got spasticity. I contacted Parkinson organisation in the UK. They told me there are lots of people got the same condition because of madopar side effects. What exercises i can do to recover from this side effects? I got holding problems to the walking frame because of spasticity. Does spasticity lead to holding problems? Please advise Dr. Tobias 😢

It depends on the person. I would look for some of the videos I have on AFO. In those videos I talk about when and who might be able to practice standing without
