Thanks for vid. Yes certainly beautiful girl, but I have been on the receiving end of a bite. Was tagged on the neck, I initially thought it was a wasp sting until I took off my shirt and found her. Luckily she was unharmed and scurried back into her natural habitat. Cool vids👍 Cheers from NZ

I mean, even though she was acting very agitated and wasn't hesitant to bite, she WAS actually more interested in threatening and avoiding contact rather than seeking a bite. So, I mean, I don't know how different her attitude is compared to the Sydney Funnel Web (I'm American, after all). I know the SFW is considered a very cranky and very aggressive spider. But this tunnel web did seem more interested in escape and warning rather than seeking to bite.

Extremely cool video. It actually sort-of made Shelob a little endearing, despite having 2 massive meathooks for fangs and an attitude like a steroid-using bodybuilder on PCP after dropping a weight on his toe.

It's spring here in NZ so these guys are starting to become active again. The males are roaming for females, caught one in my shed the other day. Moved him to another part of the garden where he might get lucky ;). How did you get one over to the UK? Do you have to have some sort of license to import this sort of thing? My favourite spider here is Eriophora pustulosa, the garden orb weaver. They make these great big perfect orb webs. Every few days they pull their webs down at the start of the night and make a brand new one. It's cool to watch them in action.

How to catch one (they can only be found in nz and mainly in the south main island there is a similar species in the north called the banded tunnel web): 1.these species are large so you'll need a reasonably large catch jar 2.search under logs and other debre in nearby bush 3. Guide the spider into the catch cup with tweasers How to set up and enclosure: 1. Layer the bottom of a rather large enclosure can be a jar or plastic or glass container with roughly 5cm of substrate 2. Add moss to the substrate can be found in your garden this will help with humidity levels 3. Mist the enclosure until the water starts wetting the soil and breaking through 4. Add bark, rocks, branches and leaves in a placement so the spider can crawl around and build its tunnels 5. Gently drop the spider in (preferably on the moss) 6. The spider should get comfortable and start spinning its webs in a few hours to a few days How to care for a tunnel web: 1.feed once or twice every week or two 2.mist once a month they do like moisture to help them moult but they do leave alot of excess prey items in there web which can mould up so be sure to remove them if you can otherwise dont mist to much They are relatively aggressive and not hard to keep females live for 6 years while males dont live long past maturity, males have a hook in there front legs, They grow up to 2 inches in body length and venom unlike the funnel web is harmless
@rebel4466

Didn't think that I would have to say this on a hobbyist channel... spiders are NOT aggressive. You're invading its space and it is trying to defend itself. Therefore it's defensive behavior.

I thought she had locked her fangs around the straw so you could lift her over into her new enclosure while she was hanging on the straw. 😄 Yes, Shelob, I'll never forget the first time I read The Lord of the Rings! I suffered from arachnophobia back then so I hardly dared to read the chapter with Sam and Frodo being attacked by Shelob. There were a few of Shelobs relatives living in Mirkwood when Bilbo and the Dwarfs were going east to get to Smaugs lair. ::shudder:: 😥 She's really amazing with the lacquer sheen of her legs and carapace. Specially her legs look like the finest Chinese black lacquered treasures.

@@MarksTarantulas Yes absolutely. I shoot a lot of stuff for fb and ig and have two recommendations. If you move around a lot and aren't always facing the camera then a lav mic is optimal. I'd recommend the Rode smartlav+. It plugs right into your phone so you can just use that as your recorder and costs 110 Canadian or less than 100 US. If you aren't gonna be moving around a lot and want top quality sound at prosumer prices, the Diety D3 is what I have and recommend. It's 100 USD and there is a pro version which has some extra cool features but the actual mic and sound quality itself is the same for both. Then u just need a boom stand to put that above your shot and you're all set!
