Release your masseter muscle and decrease jaw tightness!
o This is an extremely powerful muscle of our jaw and is a muscle of mastication, which means it participates in the function of chewing.
o It attaches up under our cheekbone here which is called the zygomatic arch and it inserts down along the mandible called the mandibular ramus.
o The masseter acts to elevate or close our jaw, so you can imagine how active this muscle is throughout the day.
o Excessive activities such as clenching and grinding are called parafunctional activities. These types of movements activate the masseter more than average as they involve mandibular elevation or a closed jaw resulting in overuse. This leads to soft tissue tightness and trigger points which can refer pain to other areas.
o When this muscle is aggravated and tight, it can refer pain into the ear, into the orbit of the eye, and even present as tooth pain.
o There are lots of ways to down train this muscle to calm it down including self-release techniques as shown in the video.

My face has bulge on right side because of chewing habit. Will it work on reducing masseter muscle?? I don't care how long it takes as long as I can see even slight results. Will it be helpful? and how can it take to give me results?
@reviveyourlifept
@reviveyourlifept Жыл бұрын
Hi there! So it can help reduce some of that muscle bulk or hypertrophy, but you would still need to address the root cause of that muscle bulging. Chewing should be done on both sides equally if possible to reduce asymmetries and excessive force on the joint itself.

I must say this is very smart 🤓 Buh I have a question can this help reduce a big jawline??
@reviveyourlifept
@reviveyourlifept 8 ай бұрын
It depends. You could have a larger jawline because the mandible (bone) itself is just large. The muscles can contribute to a larger jawline if they are hypertrophic and always activated. If there are symptoms associated with this such as pain or tightness, then you likely have some dysfunction going on in the muscles and need to downtrain your masseters by activating other muscle groups. This would typically require an exercise program with a myofunctional therapist.

Hey doc. I had jaw surgery and wiring done and ever since, the cheek/bone area in that region has seemed fatty, elevated or irritated with excess tissue in some way. Is that normal? It's asymmetric/doesn't quite match the diagonal angle of the non affected side. The recovering area is again more elevated say and straight up and down. Could this exercise help?
@reviveyourlifept
@reviveyourlifept 2 ай бұрын
Hi there! Unfortunately most surgeons don't automatically refer you to physical therapy after your jaw procedure. I highly recommend you do some kind therapy so you can repattern the right muscles to work and improve facial symmetry. Muscles are going to atrophy and change tone after a surgery, so doing some exercises to help improve strength and flexibility will be really helpful.

@@reviveyourlifept thanks so much for your response! Unbelievably appreciated. If I can ask, what would cause the space around an atrophied muscle to get puffier/more plump than the side that wasn't broken? That's basically what I'm dealing with and id like to understand. It sounds like if I massage the muscles underneath the puffed up area and around it, that puffiness may reduce and start re aligning visually with the side that wasn't subject to the broken bones maybe? The side that didn't break just looks more diagonal down to the chin and is also more well defined/better appearing cheek bone/cheek structure. Puffy side cheek is....well just puffed up haha. Thank you so so much for your help! Unbelievably appreciated

It helps bruxism, when you clench your teeth excessively. Sometimes the jaw muscles are tense even without teeth clenching. And jaw muscle pain is very annoying!!

It's a myofascial release of the muscle tissue. The masseter is one of the primary sources of pain, soreness, and tightness in those with TMJ issues. This technique can relax the muscle and reduce pain temporarily.

Does this helps to reduce the masseter hypotrophy?
@reviveyourlifept
@reviveyourlifept 2 ай бұрын
It will reduce the tightness of the masseter and could temporarily reduce the side and smooth it out. But you need to get to the bottom of why the masseter is being overactivated.

I have uneven size on each side, since I favor chewing on one side. Whenever I try chewing on the other side it clicks. How can I fix that? Thanks.
@reviveyourlifept
@reviveyourlifept 11 ай бұрын
Chewing on one side is going to create asymmetry in the muscles and how they function. It is better to chew on both sides whenever possible. Chewing on one side increases pressure into the condyle of the opposite side and can cause arthritis changes over time. The clicking and popping can fix itself but sometimes people need specific exercises for that to help keep the TMJ disc tracking properly. You should find a PT who specializes in TMJ work or a myofunctional therapist.
