Relief valve and insulation tips! I can't stress it enough!

Hey Al !! Thank you for sharing these great tips and especially the very important safety information on relief valves!! Great job my friend!! My 50 plus year old house is on a concrete slab. If a slab leak ever develops, the water supply lines would likely have to be run through the attic. I'm glad to know that Pex will not split if it freezes. Hey Al !!! I have actually set in on Continued Education classes , where they showed a Hot water Heater Blowing Aftermath !!! Went thru 3 Floors and Out the Roof , Landing in the Back Yard !!! The Relief Valve is Indeed the Front Line Safety !!! Great Job as Always Al !!!

I replumbed my house in Georgia with PVC for cold water and CPVC for hot water. I didn't insulate any of the pipes in the crawl space. The first winter we had freezing weather for a week. On the 3rd morning I heard water running under the house. The PVC had shattered in several places but the CPVC had only blown off one elbow. After repairing the pipes I used that type of insulation and haven't had any more issues, but we haven't had a week of freezing weather since then either.

Hey Fritz; I have seen a few photos myself and it is hard to believe that it could cause so much damage. This one was piped to the faucets in the house. Unreal! The last time I heard anything happening from one being plugged was the installer hooked one up for a friend of his and his friend called saying the relief was leaking. Mr. Installer plugged the relief and blew the section out of the back end of a coal boiler. And this guy should have known better. Not pretty. Tks 4 commenting. HAGO! Al

Hey William; Yeah, the copper doesn't like the cold. Before you go and install copper there is a service pipe made of plastic that everyone uses for running water mains into homes. Much cheaper then copper. I wouldn't recommend galvanized for sure. Let me know if you find it. It should not be hard to get. Thanks for commenting and good luck on the remodel! Al

Hey Ray; You are more then welcome Ray! I have noticed a few videos where people have run lines in the attack. That is fine if the temperature stays above freezing year round. The way things are now with the weather; I don't think anywhere is safe. Pretty wild for sure. I hope to get the test video out soon. Thanks for commenting Ray and enjoy your evening! Al

Thanks Al I'll check into it. I used PVC but when the water company's tech came in to install the meter he refused. Said it was ok to have pvc from the meter to the fixtures just not from the main to the meter. Just between me you and the owner. I might have to cheat because the house is a crawl space and the water company isn't going down there to check the complete run. hehehe

and that's why I don't like copper "Freeze and splits" but just found out that the city water requires copper or galvanized steel pipe to continue from the main to the feed (incoming) side of the water meter. So now i have to start over-Live and learn I guess LOL
