I recently got a question about IT band syndrome, or Iliotibial band syndrome and how to deal with the related pain.
IT band syndrome is common among runners and bicyclists. The iliotibial band is a thick band of fascia, or connective tissue, that runs down your leg to your knee. A common misconception I hear very often is “my IT band is tight and needs to be stretched.” This is really a misnomer. The IT band is made of non-contractile tissue and it has no ability to contract or lengthen.
What does have the ability to shorten is muscle. In fact most people who have “IT Band syndrome” have an overactivity of the muscles that attach directly to the band. This can be caused by repetitively using these muscles as a substitute for other muscles, like extension and flexion of your knee in those activities. In turn this can lead to pain down your iliotibial band.
