Let me start by saying I was at that game and I STILL get tears welling up when I watch that replay! Being from Detroit and spending all the years as a youth watching a pretty dismal Detroit Red Wings team circling the ice THAT remarkable goal was really the beginning of it all! THANK YOU STEVIE "Y"!!!

I was in middle school at that time growing up in metro Detroit. I remember jumping out of bed late at night running around my house screaming, and celebrating with my dad and younger brother. It’s one of my favorite goals and I feel the same as you do. GO WINGS!!

I had just moved to Las Vegas and we had a big 64-inch plasma TV that we just purchased about a month before this game. We didn't any family room furniture yet so all I had was a kitchenette chair for a seat. I barely sat down on it. It was a tense game and Casey was a stone wall coldly shutting down the Wings' best players and shooters. He had the game of his life. So Yzerman jumped the wall for his shift, I quietly said, "Come on, Stevie. Do something, baby." When Gretzky couldn't play the puck and Yzerman picked it up, skated just past the blue line, and fired the puck onto Casey that went in, I was running back and forth in the hallway of my new home, shouting, yelling, cheering on the most memorable goal I've ever seen. I couldn't stop cheering. To me, the only other goal that could possibly rival Yzerman's goal here is McCarty's SCGWG against the Flyers in 1997.

I know Gretzky is "The Great One," but I don't think there has ever been a better Captain than Stevie Y. That man gave everything he had for everyone around him, oozed red and white from his soul, and did everything he could to will his guys to win. There are far more talented Captains that have played, but pound for pound, I don't think that there has ever been a better guy you'd want next to you on the ice when it was time for battle....

It is above the accuracy of the shot Gretzky put over Vernon's shoulder simply due to it being from the point vs the faceoff circle. Gretzky's was good to look at, too, from the behind-Vernon camera...the spot he hit was literally the only spot he could have put it, Vernon was well out and cut down the angle nearly perfectly. Having thus given due credit to both of these shots / goals, there is a similar Mike Bossy against Boston goal with a nearly perfect camera angle from behind Bossy as he tucked one of his half windup slappers between Pete Peeters' arm and body, also literally the only spot he could have put it because Peeters was well out . kzbin.info/www/bejne/fV6ze5SBh9lgmJo Also Bossy's goal against Vancouver in the 82 final, having had his legs pulled out from under him much like Bobby Orr's famous flying goal in 70 (also against St Louis, scored against my best friend's uncle, Glenn Hall, we all hailing from Humboldt... :-) ). Also Bossy's Vancouver goal with 2 seconds left, Snepts inexplicably trying to clear the puck, period, rather than ragging it for the remaining 2 seconds. This is perhaps the single best example of what Bossy did for a living -- score goals. He saw that Snepts was going to clear it up the middle but remained along the boards, lulling Snepts into thinking Bossy couldn't or wouldn't go for a clearing attempt, until Snepts shot..then darted out to stop the pass, rearrange his hands and feet and put one behind Brodeur, who did a very good job of reacting to the turnover and moving out to cut down the angle, but the shot was just too precise. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oKaUeJmXlNKol80& [full disclosure, Bossy is my favorite player....lol] But yes, the Yzerman goal was a thing of beauty.

I'll never forget that goal. Uncle Stevie put a charge into that shot. I didn't remember who coughed up the puck until now.. the so-called " great one" was at fault there. He didn't even back check and try and take the puck away from The Captain. As a life-long Detroiter and Wing's fan, this is my top 3 all time favorite Wings memory. This is #2, my #1 is March 26th 1997, "D-Day in Detroit" when Big Mac got even on Claude Lemeiux and all hell broke loose

Yeah, as a Blues fan, not a fan of the clip. We had that shoved down our throats in every single playoff video package since 1996. It would be equivalent to Leafs fans having to see the Gretzky high stick or Sabres fans seeing Hull's skate in the crease every year since. A year and a day ago, I don't know that I would've watched that clip.
