The more I watch you shoot your grandpa's old guns the more I appreciate what we have now. When I started shooting in the 90's a sub MOA gun was pretty rare. Accuracy has become cheaper and more attainable since then, and seeing the old guns shoot great groups shows how dedicated your grandpa was to the art of shooting and reloading. It makes me happy to watch you shoot these 30+ year old firearms.

I bought a Remington 700 Varmint Rifle at a pawn shop probably 25 years ago. It was tagged .223 Remington and was worn pretty good but looked taken care of no rust just you could tell it rode in a truck a lot. I paid around $300 for it and it even had a sling and a Redfield scope. I got it home and decided I would send it to our local bluing shop and refinish the stock and glass bed it when I got the action back. I stripped everything off of it and then saw it was marked .222 and the .222 was xxx over and .223 was hand stamped next to it. I borrowed a couple of .223 rounds from a friend and test fired it and like you say it didn't blow my face off. The bluing shop did a satin bead blast finish and hot salt blue man it looked good. It had a steel butt plate they also blasted and blued and polished the bolt. I never got to do any hand loads for it I shot a few PMC bulk rounds and like a damn fool traded it for something else. I wish I had it back just to see what it could do with some good ammo.

I just picked up a bolt action 223 for my wife, and I was sighting it in and fire forming some brass. Well I ended up falling in love with it. The recoil is practically 0 and it's super smooth. Much less violent than my AR Wich has no recoil really but you can tell the difference with the bolt carrier and buffer spring.

Beautiful rifle. I love bolt action .223 and seeing some hand loading for a rifle other than an AR is fantastic. I have some very accurate .223 ARs but my bolt action Savage really shines with hand loads.

Very nice rifle and some great loads that were worked up. I have an old Savage 340D that was originally a Rem 222, but back when the military adopted the 223/5.56 my father had it re-chambered to the .223. It isn't a target rifle, but a fun bolt action .223 rifle to shoot.

I'm loving this series of videos brother... I know this is a little off topic but just picked up my 2nd White Oak Armament barrel it was the 18 inch SPR 1:7 twist and I'm so glad I found that company off your channel. My 1st group after a rough sight in was about a .75 inch 10 shot group. Then I cleaned the barrel, threw on my suppressor and shot another 10 shot group that went into a dime. So far I'm 2 for 2 with their barrels and probably going to pick up a 20 inch as well... Again great video as always keepem coming brother!!!

Pretty nice shooting. My 22-250 has a light trigger, I find when I do a little bullet testing, I can sometimes see my heart beat thru the cross hairs, so I do the same and try to just barely touch the rifle. I have found that if I place my thumb behind the trigger guard and index finger on the trigger and kind of pinch it between the two, my group are better and the rifle moves less.

My first rifle I reloaded for was similar, weatherby vanguard in the same caliber. 223 bolt guns are cheap and easy to shoot well! Very fun time letting my friends shoot 1/2" groups at 100 yards and being shocked at how accurate .223 handloads can be.

Vhit N133 I’ve found to be the perfect powder for this class of bullet in 223. Single base which is a real bonus yet yields 3200 fps with a moderate 23.6 gr and 3200fps with match accuracy using sierra or hornady 53 to 55 grn bullets. I load to 2.24 oal. That’s in my rifle though. If loading above 50K psi, don’t forget peeps that you should be using magnum sr primers as standard ones are not rated for the max chamber pressures of 223. It needs 25 thou primer base thickness not the standard 22 thou. Some get away with it. Some will not and end up with pierced primer bases and gas cut bolts.

The old 700 Remington's in 222 had a 1/14 twist barrel while a .223 had a 1/12 barrel twist. Flat based rifle bullets are a must with the 1/14 and bullets that are best with this twist are the flat base 40 to 50 grain match bullets. Please check the front bag as if it is too hard it might cause horizontal stringing.

Yes fully agree with not utilizing boat tails in chambered 223 with a 1 in 14 twist. I have 22 inch rifled in 14" twist chambered 223 and as long as my reloading bullets aren't any longer than 0.78" it will shoot sub MOA out to 200 yards. I can go as heavy as 62 gr Nosler FBHP (#35631) and IMR 4320 gives very low SD/ES results. But mostly shoot 50 to 60 gr Hornady's SP with H4895. With my rifle, anything longer than 0.78" the bullets will drastically tumble in flight especially during winter. Cheap bullets out of 14 twist with less spin (thus less potential wobble) will perform on avg better than if they were shot out of a faster twist barrel (1:7)

I just loaded couple hundred TNT solid copper bullets 223 30 grain pills over 26.5 grains of h335. Fps is supposed to be over 4k fps.

Just a possible explanation for the wide SD range. I too bought some of the MS unfired brass. After a few loads I started measuring the base to datum length. Surprisingly some were very much shorter than others. Fortunately none were too long. It appears the batch I had may have come from three or four different manufacturing lines. Most were the same size, but one out of about every 4 or 5 were significantly shorter. Just something to check next time you pull out that bag. Also check them after fire forming. I had a couple (1 or 2 out of 10) that didn't form to the chamber. I can only assume these "shorts" were originally the shorter ones and weren't annealed properly at the factor. Perhaps the annealing was too high to hit the shoulder? Just a theory of course.

Hi, I have the same rifle. Bought it as a used .222 rem and rechamber it in .223 for my wife as her first rifle. We first try it in .222 with 52 gr HPBT from Hornady #22495. First 5 shots in one hole at 50 m! I initially thought there was a problem with the rifle or the scope as I can only see my first shoot and not the 4 next one! We I look at the target closer and was looking for the last shot I finally made the conclusion that the for last 4 shot where in the same hole as the first one. Can believe it! Then I rechamber de rifle in .223 and now at 200m I can, all day long, keep 5 shot at a 1" dot like you shoot. This rifle is so boring accurate that usually I shoot two 5 shot group and put it back in the safe. Powder is Xterminator 24.7 gr and OAL is 2"19. The only down side of this barrel is that he is in 1/14" so it's not possible to use heavy bullets to shoot over 400 meters. Greetings from Belgium.

10x is all I have for 223/5.56. It cycles a bit weak in my mini 14 but, that’s a good thing for a mini 14, as they fly the brass to the moon normally.

N-133 and N-540 is my favorite powders for .223. N-133 for bullets up to 55 gr. N-540 for bullets above 55 gr.

My rifle really likes the 68 gr Hornady BTHP behind 24.5 gr of Varget... They're "match" projectiles too, and have a much better BC than the 53gr. 👍🏻 It also shoots the Hornady Varmint Express 40gr Vmax exceptionally well for factory loaded ammo. Savage Model 16 .223 / 1:9 / 22" bbl

I had an old .222 Remington. A friend moved to PNW from the south, where he could hunt deer with a .22 caliber rifle. He had no use for the rifle anymore, so I bought it for target shooting. For me, it was a completely different world after shooting .308 and 30.06. However, it was too hard to find ammo for it, and I wasn't into buying dies for it. So it sat in my safe for 3 years, and then my friend showed up telling me he was moving back down south, and was hoping I would sell him back his rifle. So I did. The End. 😂 LOL

In a 1:9 Twist .223/556 chamber bolt gun, 60gr Vmax shoot very well for me; also the 55gr Nosler varmint bullets. It stbalizes upto the 75gr ELM, which has to be seated well beyond 2.26"; but doesn't seem to like the 77gr match bullets.

The more I shoot .223, the more I like everything about it. A procedural questions to the experts out there. What are the proper procedures to get reliable SD/velocity numbers when testing? How hot/cool the barrel, how fouled/clean the barrel, is cartridge temperature and firearm temp accounted for in a long session, etc.

I don't know what you mean by barrel condition. The barrel heating up isn't going to effect sd's by itself. Not in my experience anyway. Now, if your ammo sits in the chamber and cooks for a while, that would be another story as I'm sure you know.

@@reloadingfun Barrel condition, how many shots between cleaning, carbon fouling, copper fouling, fire cracking, defects in the barrel (pits, tooling marks. Interesting that velocity readings of a cold barrel vs. medium hot vs. hot barrel had no effect on your SD'S. I would have thought that the SD'S would have been better if the barrel was left to cool to ambient between shots. That's the kind of info I need, what dose and does not effect the data. Thanks!

I found one. It's a Savage Axis II Precision in .223 Rem. I had 20 rounds through it doing barrel break in and ran my bore scope through it. I found a great big pit in the bore about two inches from the muzzle. I contacted Savage customer service and sent photos from the bore scope. It took over a week to get a reply. Then they emailed me a shipping label to send that brand new rifle in for repair. They received it on May 5th... 52 days ago. I'm still twiddling my thumbs waiting to get it back. I've loved my Savages but I think the honeymoon is over. The bugger of it is, I wanted to get a Ruger American Predator .223 but haven't seen one in a very loooooong time so I got the Savage. Of course now I'm frequently seeing Rugers and very much regretting buying the Savage. "No good customer goes unpunished"

I've shot a Ruger predator. Didn't like it. I don't like he Savage because the crappy chassis will be tossed in the bin for an A5 style stock. Tikka and CA have one I like but good luck finding one. Might be time to build and call it good. I like my Savage rifles but they don't have anything I really care for at the moment.

TC Compass has a 22" threaded barrel, 1:9 twist. Mine stabalizes the 75gr ELDM, at longer then AR length, but fits in TC mag. It does seem to prefer the 40-69gr bullets over the 77gr OTM styles, but they don't keyhole

I use a medicine spoon I filed the lip some so kernels would roll off better into the pan on my Lee beam scale ands all I’ve had the 4yrs I been loadin now…gettin better all the time far as consistency..have to keep the air off so they stay dead still…

I would say the fact you’re fire forming brass is the reason you’re having terrible sd/es. When i was fire forming brass for my bolt 223, i used starline 556 with SWP and 62bthp. I had a sd of 19 and es of 100 over the spread of 100 shots.
