My action tube was alot harder to break free, bent a pin punch trying to break it loose. I'm assuming it was never taking apart, it had red lock tight on the threads I had to clamp it to a table and heat it with propane torch and it came apart easy, so if anyone has the same problem try it. Don't oval the holes like I did lol.

Thanks for the helpful tip. Why would someone put red Loctite on the threads?

No idea, not sure if they originally used lock tight at the factory or not..glad I got it apart there was some nasty crud built up that was probably never cleaned. I mounted a 2x7 scope and it shoots beautifully, I believe mine was manufactured in the 70's much better than some of the newer rifles made today imo.

GREAT info. Was just given one of these exact rifle..The owner told me hes had it for over 40 years. Never took it apart or oiled it.. I am expecting it to be tight. Will have a torch or cigar lighter on hand.

Mine was built in the 70s and I just took it apart thanks to this video. I don’t believe mine was ever taken apart. I’ve always kept it clean and shot well over 40 deer with it. But never feel stripped it. Mine had red Loctite in it too. Must be from the factory. I did not put any new Loctite back on after cleaning it. I hope that is OK. But it is awful tight. It was extremely difficult to get a part and I used a hair dryer to heat it.

I broke a needle nose pliers tip in the hole and also bent both holes slightly, I’m sure if I use the punch and actually get it all the way through to the other hole for more leverage, it will break too haha. If I use a torch, I will probably ruin the action. I’m taking mine to a gunsmith before I accidentally destroy the gun lmao

Two tips. Shoot some break free into the holes of the action tube and hold the barrel upright before trying to unscrew the action tube. Let it set for about 5 minutes. Second, when placing the barrel back into the receiver, put some heavy grease under the dust cover to help hold it in place.

Good video, a little trick I use to hold the dust cover in place is to put a rubber band around the rifle to hold the front part of the dust over in place until you get it into its little groove in the receiver. Then cut the band to finish inserting the barrel assembly into the receiver.

Finally decided to bring my dads carbine 308 back to life and use it again. As the comments have mentioned breaking the action tube was not going to happen. I applied heat and it broke with moderate effort. The barrel was hard to free but with a little WD it slid out. I do not think this gun was ever torn down since new sometime late 70s I believe.

Good tutorial, well done and narrated. I have just taken apart my "new" 760 (new to me - 1956 vintage) using this tutorial and would like to add some caveats. 1) First, getting that dust cover in there is not enough. It may go in and seem all in order but when you go to cycle your action the gun is jammed. If you are new to this, you won't know it's because the dust cover didn't go in there "just so." You will fret around and take the gun apart and try to figure out for a half hour or more why it jammed when you put it back together. 2) Also, my trigger group was a bit of a bear to stuff back in there. In doing so the clip button mechanism came off. Because i was not familiar with the entire workings of the group and not expecting stuff to pop off, i didn't realize that a tiny spring popped of with it. Figured out how to reinstall the clip button but didn't realize the little spring was missing and couldn't figure out why now that i'd figured out the problem with the dust cover and how to get it in there just so my clip kept falling out on reassembly. Luckily i spotted the tiny spring on the floor and remedied this problem. But beware, stuff can come off trying to wedge that trigger group back in! 3) Third problem is that now that the gun is reassembled and everything is working is that, well, everything isn't working. The action will not lock up now. This one was fairly easy to figure out looking into the receiver with the clip out. The locking arm at the front of the trigger group is not snapping entirely into place when the pump is racked forward now. It's like somehow in the disassembly and reassembly the thing has gained a fraction of a millimeter in length, impeding it from snapping quite into place as it should and lock the pump. Either that or the pump is not racking forward as far as it was before by the same fraction. Not sure how to address this obviously critical detail that you don't want to get wrong. But i'll be taking the thing apart again anyway because ... 4) in the multitude of times the bolt mechanism fell out onto the kitchen floor in trying to figure out why the thing was jammed on reassembly, one of the little bolt pins had fallen out. I didn't know this had happened. Luckily at the end of all this travail, i spotted that tiny thing on the floor too, and recognized it for what it was. So beware of that, too. That bolt assembly falls, those pins can come out. Just in general, be ready for little stuff falling out and off. So i'm gonna have to take it apart for the third time to get at the bolt again. Tomorrow - enough is enough. In the meantime i have a much cleaner gun for when i get the thing working again as it did before i took it apart. Hey, this is how you learn. Thanks. I'm very excited about this gun, an ADL. I refinished the wood and it looks super and now did the cleaning. The bore is in great shape and it is a .300 Savage, ammo i have plenty of and handload for as well. The tighter rate of twist (1 in 10 or a little less in this 760) stabilizes the 180 grain bullets my Savage 99's won't do so well with in this calibre with its 1 in 12 twist best for 150 grainers max. Oh, on my 56, the forearm does not come off as it does in this later model. There is a slotted screw recessed into the front of the wood that you must actuate using a coin once the action tube assembly has been unscrewed and taken apart.
@tozobozo4142
@tozobozo4142 4 жыл бұрын
Addendum to above for those interested. The pump was indeed being kept from sliding forward to completion a fraction of a millimeter by the slotted sleeve screw recessed in at the front of the forend wood in this 1956 model. It was not tightened entirely, effectively stopping the slide just short which in turn effectively made the locking arm a fraction too long to lock into place and hold the slide. So i remedied that but found out another source of an action not locking. Seems if that same locking arm bends inward just a tad the slide metal bypasses it to the side. The arm must be snug to the receiver for it to function as a locking mechanism. Perhaps when the clip is in it aids in this as well. I was very careful bending that thing. I am sure it is on high temper and a person can just imagine it snapping right off. At any rate, all is functional now, very clean, and i sure know a great deal more of the ins and outs of this gun. The Devil is in the details. All that remains is to find out how well it shoots. Thanks again for the tutorial, would not have attempted this without it, and it's very well done.

@@ncshootist you're welcome, and indeed i referred to your bolt disassembly vid as well - excellent and useful. I have a hunch this rifle of mine had never bin serviced to this level before - that is, in 64 years. It was pretty grimy in there but nothing like some of the stories you hear. Isn't it amazing how these fine tools can hold their own against time?! Anyways, armed with your vids and with a new recoil pad i installed and dark walnut stain job with tru-oil finish i now feel i have a "near-new" rifle that is additionally a classic.

I reference this video all the time. When ever I am putting it back together I always have issues. When your putting the bolt/barrel back into the receiver, do you have the bolt fully locked into the barrel? Every time I put it back together for the first time I get it all done and realize my bolt is stuck in barrel and I can’t release it. Then I have to take it apart and redo it. Probably my least favorite gun to take apart lol.

When you put the bolt back into the action bar, you’ll need to fully lock the bolt into the barrel before sliding all of that into the receiver. Putting the bolt and dust cover back into the gun is my least favorite part too. You have to hold your mouth just right!

Ryan, there are two variations in the breech bolt design…an early and a late variation. This website shows those variations. cfnparts.com/index.php?route=product/category&path=117 You’ll need to research your serial number to determine which variation your rifle uses. @NCSootist, Hearing about a lot of the new guns its safe to dry fire, without a snap cap. But I am from the old school and I was taught to never dry fire any gun without a snap cap, or an empty bullet that was fired before (with the gun unloaded of course), which I still follow this rule from my Grandpa and dad etc....Thought on the older guns, it will screw up and break the firing pin without using a snap cap ?

@ncshootist

Thanks for watching! It sounds like the bolt isn't seated right in the action bar or maybe there's some crud in the bolt that's causing it not to move freely. Without looking at the rifle it would be hard to tell. You could try tearing down the rifle and bolt to make sure everything is clean and put together correctly. I'm not sure what problems develop over time with this rifle; mine's probably 45 years old and still runs like new. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

@@ncshootist Thanks. Got the barrel out. The whole bolt assembly is really worn. The large pin for the cam was missing. Both the small pin and large pin hole is ovaled out. Just ordered a new (used) bolt assembly for the gun. This was my fathers gun (1955). Just redid the stock. Want to get it back in good order to give to my son. Not sure why the cover fell out in the first place. It might have something to do with the large pin falling out?

Maybe keep the action unlocked and cycle the pump action until it starts coming loose? You could also try setting it outside in the cold and maybe the metal action tube will contract enough to pull the forend off.

@ncshootist
@ncshootist 4 жыл бұрын
Jared, it sounds like slide lock and disconnector are disengaged. The problem could be the connector arm which is connected to the trigger is under the slide lock instead of on top of it which is a common reassembly mistake.
@chehsed
@chehsed Жыл бұрын
@jaredlewis7315 , That happened to me, too, and after much analysis, I realized what the problem was: I had screwed on the bolt in the front of the forend too tightly. That bolt on the front of the forend controls how far the forend travels. That, in turn, controls how far the main silver bolt travels into the barrel. If the main silver bolt is not fully inside the barrel, then the disconnect lever will not be able to get all the way behind the flat arm that is attached to the forend, causing the trigger to not reset, as "ncshootist" pointed out. If you are able to pump the forend over and over again without pulling the trigger, then the disconnect lever is not where it should be. The disconnect lever should prevent you from being able to pump the forend until you pull the trigger. That can only happen when the main silver bolt is seated all the way in the barrel. And that can only happen if the forend is allowed to travel further towards the end of the muzzle. So back out the bolt that is in front of the forend a couple turns, and you should see the main silver bolt be able to go all the way into the barrel, and the disconnect lever should snap under the side flat arm that's attached to the forend. Then your trigger will reset. :)
