I got the 45 Colt conversion for my 1858 Remington. Seeing Brandon Herrera show how easy it was to take the cylinder out was the reason I chose it for a conversion cylinder over a 1851 Colt Navy. I was recently talking to a guy who does Old West gun fight reenactments when I told him that I paid $245 for mine. He told me that the conversion cylinder cost more than a cowboy revolver. I was perplexed, until I realized he bought guns that only shot blanks, not guns that can shoot real lead like my guns can.

I am really glad I spent the money and got a 45 Colt cylinder for my 1858 revolver.
@danielcurtis143411 ай бұрын
Really why??? I’m thinking about it. Problem is I could only use it on my 1866 Remington revolver if rifle (erroneously called the 1858 carbine) as my 5.5” New model army pistol is a brass frame. I’ve heard brass frame Remingtons are strong enough to handle .45 LC cowboy loads but I don’t really know what to think? In any case shooting projectiles powder and caps is really cheap like $.15 or something. Shooting .45 LC is not so cheap…

@@danielcurtis1434 You always could order a steel frame
@danielcurtis143411 ай бұрын
@@eaSTS9 yeah I considered that…however I can’t figure out how you swap the barrel on it??? I’ve heard everything from “just screw it off” to its a factory set don’t even try. I’ve heard it can be heated. Ultimately I think swapping frames is out of my mechanical capacity (though I’d love to learn). If you know anything about barrel swapping an 1858 let me know? I’ve stripped it down to frame and barrel but if I can’t get it any further.
@eaSTS99 ай бұрын
@@danielcurtis1434Sorry for the1 month late reply, did you end up changing it? And if I was you, I'd just sell the brass frame gun on a classifieds forum for example and then buy a steel frame gun. It is possible to switch them, but I don't know the exact method how although it probably is done by heating, usually there is something similar to locktite on the barrel threads and it would take some more explaining than via youtube if i did have the exact answer. Selling/rebuying will be much easier
@danielcurtis14349 ай бұрын
@@eaSTS9 yeah it’s really not a good time!!! It would be a wall of text to explain everything im dealing with. However I would love to change it out. I’ll follow the locktite angle if I can. I think contacting pietta is probably best. I’ve heard people using a penetrating oil followed by moderate heat abd it supposed to come off. Anyways one day down the road for sure. Still to my eye. An 1858 Remington in brass is really the just beautiful the lines fit perfectly IMO. But definitely one day when I could use a project.

Hi Dustin, just wanted to say I've been running HSM ammo as well through my Remington New Army Carbine as well and I really love it. One of my uncles came over yesterday shortly after I had finished shooting and I still had all of my gear out and he couldn't stop admiring the gun

Enjoyed your review of the Remington carbine with the 45 Colt conversion. I recently bought one and got the same cylinder actually 2 cylinders since I have the 1858 Remington revolver as well. I found the carbine to be really accurate out to 40 yds hitting my swinging plates. The sights were right on out the box and I get really nice groups with my 230 and 255 gr. lead bullets over 5.5 gr. of Red Dot. My speeds were 830-850 with the Speer soft lead 230 gr. and 820 with a cast lead 255 gr. bullet. The carbine is really light weight and very handy to shoot and load with 2 cylinders....roll one out and pop in another! Really enjoy shooting it and best thing was it could be shipped right to my home! It would make a great little camp carbine being so light and easy to carry!

With the dearth of percussion caps, I suspect many of us might be converting our cap and ball revolvers to cartridge revolvers. The one drawback, unless you reload, factory 45 colt is absurdly expensive. It would be interesting to see a video with those loaded with actual blackpowder. I bet the velocities would be much higher.
@surrelljr4 ай бұрын
I was thinking of getting one of those cylinders for my carbine, it would be great for home defense with the reliability of modern cartridges. I keep the cap and ball on the ready, however I wouldn’t want a failure during a critical moment. So I’ve been shopping around, a 45 long colt cowboy load would be plenty, Boot Hill has enough proof.

I'm glad you did that... I was just asking about that for this exact gun with a conversion cylinder,,,,that is awesome!!!! Absolutely no worries about a chain fire......such a beautiful gun,,wish it came in stainless steel, or nickel plated !!!...it would probably take my breath away...lol

The conversion cylinder is a great option for these firearms. I don't remember if you said what type powder is used in these cartridges. I would assume that it is still Black Powder but I didn't see much smoke when you fired it.

These are actually smokeless, which is fine in a conversion, as long as you’re not using hot loads.

I almost bought one of these this week, but the company that sold them would not take returns. Then I read a review that said a customer received one with scratches and boogered screw slots, so I did not buy from that company which is a well known multimillion dollar company that I have bought from for decades.

Very nice carbine. It’s good to see you got a similar .45 Colt conversion cylinder to what I have. Mine is a Howell blued steel fluted cylinder that I use in my Uberti 1858 new model army revolver with an 8 inch barrel and a blued steel receiver. I have a video posted on my channel of me using that piece and cylinder with some Winchester Super X .45 Colt 250 grain cowboy loads to take out an 8 inch terra cotta flower pot from about 30 feet away. I used to use the HSM .45 Colt 200 grain cowboy loads but my piece prefers the Winchester Super X .45 Colt 250 grain cowboy loads. If you get a chance please watch my video and if you enjoy it please like it and leave a comment
