MEINE GÜTE! You have made my day good sir. I have 1950s era Super-Riter. Not sure exact specs or what have you. I got this off Goodwill and while pretty much everything else works smoothly out of box, I was encountering the skipping. Your trick worked wonders. I will admit that I could not find the segment at first. Had to take off the side panels to be able to remove the back panel. I then was able to locate the proper elements. Adjustments were then another couple minutes of work. Gave a quick test and reassembled. This video has been a major blessing! I do need to give the maschine a bit of a cosmetic cleanup. I appreciate your videos.

I have 2 Office-Riters and a Quiet-Riter. The QR skipped…turned out the fixed dog was loose on its pivot. Addressing that fixed it. One of the Office-Riters skipped. Turned out someone before me had the mainspring tension way overwound (as compared to the other two). Released 2 turns on the ratchet, no more skipping. My 3 are very forgiving, not sensitive to technique at all. One of the Office-Riters occasionally piles, it’s not technique, but it has been used and abused the most with signs of trauma. All things considered it types surprisingly well for a used and abused machine.

Van Cleave has one, it’s not a nut and screw, it’s a metal part you form. This Remington design looks better. I haven’t tried to do it, my QDL is prone to skipping if I hit a key too hard, for me it’s mostly h but i will do it too pointing to my right hand as the culprit. It also crowds sometimes as if it sticks a bit. Just typing 2 or 3 pages a day has helped it. The trip point is too close, I believe. It’s a wonderful typewriter if I play it like a soft piano piece, very fast.

Love to see this on a Royal HH. Those are notorious for skipping if your technique isn't perfect.

I have a Smith - Corona speed typewriter that I am having this problem with. Now I know why and how to correct it. Now I just need to find how to make the adjustment.

Excellent explanation, as always! Makes me wander: I have the opposite problem with my Erika model M; every now and then, a letter is printed over by the next ("shadowing"?) Maybe I should try to turm the corresponding screw in the opposite direction?

I have the same issue with my Olivetti lettera 32. The escapement is a little harder to access.

I have similar problem with an Olympia SG1 9 ( ca. 1956 !? ) - carriage skips 2, 3, 4 characters sometimes but only when certain keys are typed, namely A and the + above it, both of which stick a bit at impact and do not return well. Tried cleaning these, and added tiny bit of light 3M oil on hinge underneath. Relieved tension on drawband two clicks. Seems to be better, not as frequent, but still happening. Is escapement adjustable on the SG1 like you performed here? Machine seems to perform better with the drawband spring tighter too. Lots of fiddley items ( borrowed term from Joe Van Cleave video ) but this relates to this video. Any ideas? thx

I have one of these and the shift key is super stiff and will not fully depress. So I can only type in caps when I use the shift lock. Anyone got any ideas? It worked fine when I bought it, but while fixing some other issues this problem suddenly arose.

Thanks for the great video. My ribbon cover doesn’t stay up like that, it’s really annoying to change the ribbon. It’s like the hinge point won’t allow it to stay up

I have couple that do that (Royal and an SC) that others on the internet stay up. Not having one for comparison not sure if maybe something is bent or I’m not doing it right. I prop them open with something handy.

Hi Duane. Very informative video. Would you have any suggestions as to why my left margin set doesn't hold? No matter where I put it, the carriage will return to the far left, whizzing past the left margin set. I appreciate any help.

Well that's not common, so no I don't know without investigating. did it ever work ? was machine shipped ? is margin release jammed ? Would need to see how margin interacts with stop, see if something is bent....

@@phoenixtypewriter2136 Thank you very much. It was indeed shipped, but arrived in very good condition in the case. Types great. Guess I'm gonna have to get brave and try to remove a panel or two to get to the bottom of the problem. BTW, margin release does not appear jammed; it works just fine.

@@phoenixtypewriter2136 After getting the small panel off which conceals the margin stops, I found the tab on the left margin set which hits the block was somehow bent up and was not fully engaging the stop. I carefully bent it down and now it's working fine. Thanks for the insights, Duane. Cheers!
