Looking to buy a new reel. What is the best reel in your opinion as far as pulling power. I fish a lot of heavy turbulent fast moving water. In the tail races of dams/ spillways. Been using the tekota 500 , but i've got to lock the drag all the way down to gain any pulling power on stripers in the current. I tried using my tyrnos 30 , but you can't cast that thing!
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS6 жыл бұрын
Without a Doubt, the Accurate Fury. Low gear. I use low gear on everything. You will have plenty of power and more drag than you will ever use. You’re only regret will be from not getting one sooner.

I'm new to baitcasters. But why is the one in your video so large and only use 30 lbs line? Is this how they looked before low profile came out. Growing up in Louisiana whenever I seen someone with a larger size baitcaster, it was for deep sea. Everyone used spinners for inshore trout n reds.
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS6 жыл бұрын
It’s a conventional lever drag reel. The size is just for line capacity. 30# mono can take up a lot of space. We use these for live bait and chunking for Striped Bass.

I do a lot of surf fishing here in Florida and use baitcasters and spinning reels the reason I use a Seigler sm baitcaster with 12ft Penn rod 20lb mono and 30lb leader and Akios with a 9ft rod16lb mono and 20lb leader I am able to cast further with less weight and have found when hooked up with a brute like a fast Tarpon or shark I can control the battle better with a baitcaster and unlike a spinner reel I can take apart without any difficulty. True it takes awhile to learn to use a baitcaster for surf fishing but now I find I use the spinning gear less often. I have landed many fish over 25lbs using 16lb mono and 20lb leader and thin I could handle brutes up to 40 - 50 lbs .
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS6 жыл бұрын
I agree across the board. The spinning reel has its place and we still use them a bit, but spinning reels aren’t very efficient when using physical energy, you are fighting against two 90 degree angles that reduce power to the fish. The 90 in the main gear to the pinion gear and the 90 in the line itself as it transitions from the rod across the roller bearing under the bail.

@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS6 жыл бұрын
anthony dinunzio glad you like the videos!! Yes, that is an Accurate Rod. I was super lucky and got a bunch of the preproduction rods when they first came out. They are Seeker blanks, 7020c light medium. Very strong backbone with a super light soft tip. Perfect for Bait, cut and live. These were actually called Xnergy rods at the time, then switched to Xtreme. Unfortunately they weren’t available in the light-medium after the change for some reason. Try the Accurate site first for 7020c LIGHT-medium. If they’re not available try SEEKER. make sure you see LIGHT somewhere in the model name. The straight medium are a bit too stiff for me. Too many dropped fish.
@shootist4316 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mike, appreciate the info. I already own a Accurate xtreme medium action I believe its a 20-30lb class but I'm looking for something a little lighter. I will check out Seeker though.

I just bought a valiant 800 , is that still a castable reel or is that too big to cast?
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS5 жыл бұрын
An 800 is pretty large, but definitely castable. I wouldn’t chuck and retrieve all day with artificials that’s for sure. I used a 600 Narrow for a season and casted chunks with it ok. The larger the spool the more apt to back lash so tap that spool immediately after releasing it.

There is a trick, but I have done this so many times as a guide that this is still the fastest for me. The trick is to tighten the drag, press your thumb down on the spool very hard and crank the reel a few times. It pushed the backlash right out. May take a few attempts for bad back lashes.

Or, you could lock the drag down as tight as it'll go, put your thumb on the spool, crank the handle a bunch of times, line all the loops up in the same direction, press the button, and pull out the backlash by yourself with no loops!!!!!!
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS2 жыл бұрын
Sure. That works especially well with braid. I’ve done both, but I’m WAY faster with this method.
@bryantg76412 жыл бұрын
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS I get it boss, I use both methods also. You tend to get some backlashes when fishing a small plastic worm with a light bullet weight for bass. Not the easiest thing to throw with a baitcaster.

Boitano Excavation late but completely agree, spinners are soo easy to use and why hassle dealing with a birds when you can do more fishing?
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS5 жыл бұрын
Spinning reels are ok for light line. I use em, but they are the least efficient reels made. Two 90 degree angles rob you of power and speed. One 90 on the main to pinion gear and another from the line traveling under the the roller. The much smaller spools mean smaller drag systems. They also require twice as many bearings so they cost more and wear out faster. You lose line contact when lowering baits as well. Good for casting and retrieving lighter lines or for kids that can’t handle a conventional, but they are far from the same. You sacrifice a lot just for easy casting of light lines.
