Notice how strategic they were with freeing themselves. Paul knew his Voice isn't as good, so he didn't try to do it on all of them. Instead, he only got one of them to ungag her mother. Jessica alone is more than enough. The first thing she did was to kill the soldier who is deaf, since he's the only one who is a threat to them, being immune to the Voice.

A point I didn't notice my first watch is how Jessica strings her orders together as soon as the previous one is fulfilled. Lately I’ve been watching this movie a lot because I’m just blown away by how well it was made and the other night, while watching this scene I was thinking- if I was writing this scene what commands would I write for Jessica in this moment? Because the possibilities can be confusing but it was well executed in the movie.
@Jayk-kz7sh
@Jayk-kz7sh Жыл бұрын
I like that her commands become less ambiguous with clear objectives as the fight goes on. “Set us free” while easy to say, is not as specific as “cut the rope” or “give me the knife”. She didn’t bother repeating the command after she saw the guard got interrupted the first time. Jessica made it clear that she wanted the guard to free her first, and give her his weapon so she can kill them and free her son herself. It’s a good scene to establish that the Voice isn’t just an all powerful magic force to rely on. It has its own limitations, and it’s up to the use their own cunning and strength to finish the job

A very subtle detail that I love they included was that if you listen closely to when Paul first tries to use the voice, you can hear the VFX on the first word "remove" but it then peters out on the rest of the sentence. Paul failed but not entirely, you could feel his sense of desperation to get The Voice right, causing him to force it. So Jessica pointing out that his pitch was too forced just fit perfectly.

Not just the "remove" part, the whole thing he says has a undertone of base that is present when the voice is being used, the telltale sign was planted when he used the voice the first time. The low bass that accompanies it is being used incredibly well to emphasis how much control over the voice Paul has, and the amount of bass present represents the amount of control he has.

@Desert Power Nope. Nothing to do with that. It's about social manipulation. Not necessarily just power. Definitely not magic. Nothing like a Jedi mind trick. The best example is how in the book Jessica actually uses the voice to genius effect to plant the idea of "having her" if you will in the minds of the captors in this scene. The actual point being to pit them against each other. She executes the manipulation flawlessly and it is incredibly intelligent, empowering, and so much better than the movie is able to do. Paul manipulates by using something that gives the sensation of it being the captors own idea. He times it such that the captors hand is moving towards Jessica's skirt, so when Paul accesses the pitch and tone range that is most effective on the man his words act like the man's own thoughts. The captor does it unthinkingly, and even thinks it's his own will, as he says "her hands are tied anyway", and is clearly focused on things other than Paul. I presume his thoughts include the gag needing to be removed. Of course I love the movie, it's one of my all time favourites, and forgive it for not being able to capture something so subtle. It's a very dark and non child friendly scene as well sadly.
@DaveDexterMusic
@DaveDexterMusic 2 жыл бұрын
obviously it's more elaborate, but since paul's already some way to mastering the voice, it's more likely to be a single detail of technique that holds him back now rather than an entire system of knowledge. it may as well be the pitch, why not?

The sound effect and echo used in the Lynch version to represent the voice was very good. As I remember the one thing they did in in this film that was interesting was the memory loss in the box scene. The Voice is a mind manipulation tool... from the persepective of the victim they would be confused or plain unaware of what happened.

I still and very much prefer the sound effect and echo of the 1984er version of the Voice. Get me? It's probable that how it work is the voice is convincing the victim that the voice that the use cast is the victim's own voice and the victim's mind heaering it is being convince that its thinking what the use is saying, so it make sense that the victim's mind is doing what it believe is their own thinking.

I sort of don't like how the voice is portrayed here. While this Dune movie is superior the old movie IMO does it correctly. In the old movie instead of "Kill Him!" she says, "No need to fight over me." The second voice command isn't like mind control but more of a subtle feminine mind trick sort of akin to hypnosis. I think the second way gives way to the evolutionary advantage the Bene Gesserits were able to obtain of centuries of genetic breeding and training. Plus if the Bene Gesserits were capable of just direct mind control there is no reason why they wouldn't be in power now or why the Emperor would have a Bene Gesserit consul because a person would be leary of having someone with that kind of power around him. Just about everything else is better in this movie than the old except for maybe this one thing.
@CaptainPrincess
@CaptainPrincess Жыл бұрын
mind control with just your vocal commands does leave you open to a lot of flack you cant rule an empire on just commanding people and youre not gonna have everyone under your dominion at all times, plus people will resent being controlled theyre playing the vizier game, they most likely have prettymuch all the power and autonomy they really want and get to hide their true agenda and power because theyre not the ones visibly in charge so theyre not the ones who have to watch over their shoulders power isnt free those in charge will always have to be careful to watch for those who want to be in charge

I don't like the way they turned the voice into a crazy growl in this. It's not a magical power, it's an insidious psychological hack. It would have been a better effect to have background noise and then have it suddenly be silent, with the voice clear and firm: the only sound in the universe, then the background noise rushes back in as the victim begins to obey.
@Fear_the_Nog
@Fear_the_Nog 2 ай бұрын
I prefer this. It's creepier and in the theater your entire body shakes from the effect and it doesn't sound like a growl but a lot of voices speaking at the same time shaking your body. The effect you speak of has been done to death, in things as low budget as Buffy. The whole background noise cancels out thing is so cliched at this point, after almost a century of use, that it annoys more than conveys a sense of awe.

The movie simplified it. In the books, the Voice has many uses, but none of them are as "magical" as it was portrayed here. The ability is based on an inhumanly perfect control over one's own body and its functions. The Voice is generally employed for soothing, persuasion, manipulation, suggestion, scolding, oration, or commanding (in the general sense) - a finely trained tool to convey very delicate meanings. A skilled user can also detect falsehoods in the voice of another person. The book version of Lady Jessica was not able to simply command the Harkonnen soldiers to kill each other like in this scene. But once it became clear that they were lusting after her, she used the Voice to further seduce them and incite them against each other, to fight over her. She then asked the last man standing to release Paul, promising that if he would let her son live, she would be cooperative. And once Paul was freed, he killed the last soldier. The Voice could be also used offensively, in the sense that an abrupt command would force a person to obey involuntarily, before the body had a chance to react to it. But such command required the Voice user to "register" the person first, i.e. to spend some time with the victim, observe and listen to them, in order to learn that person's "range" to determine the proper tone and timbre of the Voice. Lady Jessica used this on Thufir Hawat (who she had known for years) when he accused her of being a Harkonnen spy, to show him that she could have killed him if she were really his enemy. It was also possible to plant a trigger word in a person's psyche that could incapacitate them momentarily if spoken to them - the Bene Gesserit agents did it preventively to various dangerous persons throughout the Empire, as a basic precaution. Jessica speculated that Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen had been prepared this way, and so was the slave gladiator that Feyd-Rautha was fighting in the Harkonnen arena on Giedi Prime.
