This was so helpful as I had a double bearing blowout in one wheel, My main issue was that the bearing case would not budge. In a last ditch effort before succumbing to the idea of buying a new set, I decided to put washing up liquid in the wheel and wash it out with warm water, the case popped out with ease!

Spacers are used to enable the axle nut to be tighten all the way without crushing the bearings. This makes the entire wheels assembly solid on the axle. When all the parts fit together properly the bearings and wheels can function to their optimum performance. The bearings will last longer because they can handle loads better, and the wheel won't shaking on the axle. This can also increase speed and reduce high frequency wobbles (speed wobbles).

An axle washer is used as a spacer between the nuts and the hanger face. If you don't have a washer it can effect the performance of your bearings. It's not a big deal unless you are really into speed and how well your bearings perform.

What spacers do you have? An easy way to tell is to put the bearings in without a spacer and mark with a pen on the wheel where the bearing edge is. After marking without a spacer you can do the same with a spacer. usually it could be .002-.004" off.

@DragonandFlip1 Everyone rides different wheels. Since you are young, i would recommend for you 51-52mm. It's easier to ollie with shorter legs and smaller wheels but your ollie can be lower than with bigger wheels. However, it all depends on how you ollie, because you could still pop the board high with small wheels.

@skatercookie123 There's a lot of variables that come into play for a spacer to work or not. Spacers help to reduce loads to make the bearings function better. Sometimes the problem is that spacers don't fit between the bearings because the seat (the gap) in the wheel is smaller. I have found that Bones bearing spacers and Bones wheels don't even match. This is a problem throughout wheels and spacers. Spacers are great when a wheel can accommodate them. The video will explain this thoroughly.

Spacers are good, but since most street skaters don't use spacers I told them how to tighten the wheels without spacers. If spacers fit right then they will allow the axle nut to be tighten down all the way and still let the wheels spin fast.

yea, you should make a video on how to take apart a bearing, ive done it so many times just to thoroughly clean the bearing rings and balls, and the cage, but idk if its good or bad for the bearing

It's really all about what feels good to you. To do it evenly just lay the board grip tape side down and push down on the trucks with your hands. You can feel which trucks is harder to move. You don't need them even at all. I personally like my back truck a little tighter than the front.
@RatVision
@RatVision 13 жыл бұрын
@JesseGierke This happened to multiple wheels because you don't do any proper bearing maintenance. This has nothing to do with the wheel. If the bearing is still in tact but is not coming out then you need to watch the video on removing and replacing bearings in a wheel.

The may be the standard in peoples minds, but are by no means a bearing to compare all others too. They are just that decent. However, you can face they same problem. You may want to try Oust. They're what we recommend. The Moc 5's have metal ball retainers, which are better for street skating, and they have 2 metal shields or rubber seals (moc 5 tech).

You can't wash them but you can add lubricant with them on. Try to get a drop between the inner bearing ring and the shield.
@RatVision
@RatVision 12 жыл бұрын
That sucks. Sorry to hear about your house. You can try WD-40 and pry the bearings out on the truck axle like we show in the other video for inserting and removing wheels. Hit the wheel that is stuck with a hammer to free it from the axle. Let us know how things work out.
@RatVision
@RatVision 13 жыл бұрын
@JesseGierke Either This will happen because you don't have any lubricant in the bearings. Always keep shields or seal on.
@RatVision
@RatVision 12 жыл бұрын
Spacers should allow the nut to be tightened all the way down snug. That's how the wheels should be. Since nearly all street skaters don't use spacers we showed how to tighten the nut down without spacers. However, since wheels and spacers hardly ever fit correctly you probably won't be able to tighten the nut down all the way and have the wheels spin good. Tighten the nut down just until it stops turning, don't force it. Then back the nut off 1/8 - 1/4 until it starts to spin freely.
@RatVision
@RatVision 12 жыл бұрын
By not using spacers and washers it just adds stress to the bearing, which does not allow the bearing to function at its best. You probably won't notice a difference, but the bearing life may be shorter.
@RatVision
@RatVision 13 жыл бұрын
@icebalz Ok this may be the only case where I would say use WD-40. You could also use a screwdriver and a hammer to get it off. Also try grabbing it with some pliers and twist it off. It will come off.

Yes, same deal with longboards. You just don't want the nut to tight where it isn't letting the wheel spin freely.
@RatVision
@RatVision 13 жыл бұрын
Spacers are very important. Check out the video we did about wheels and spacers if you haven't already. You'll discover how bearing spacers work and also don't work in wheel. Hardly any street skaters use spacers, so we did this video without using spacers and showed how to tighten the axle nut down. Other videos on the youtube say to tighten all the way down tight. That ruins a bearing instantly. So we wanted to tell people the correct way. Anyway, spacers are great but need to fit right.
@RatVision
@RatVision 13 жыл бұрын
We replied to this using our phone. It didn't send. It won't hurt the bearing but it reduces performance.

I looked into it and just removed the spacers. Actually I could press the bearings deeper in the wheels after I've removed the spacers. I also could screw the nut further down on the axle. So its pretty clear, that the spacer is longer/bigger than the space it should fill out inside the wheel. Thanks for the advice!

Sounds like u had some really bad bearings. The ball retainer must have been damaged in one or both bearings, so the balls were loose in the bearing. You may or may not have had any seals or shields on them so it was easy for the balls to also fly out. One bearing may have exploded, and becuz of the wheel being completely out of balance/wobbling the other bearing may have exploded from all the force. Basically the wheel pried itself off the bearing and flew off. Outer rings still in the wheel?

@sk8rforlif In my next video about bearings it will explain the importance of bearing spacers. They are hardly used in street skating and not sold in most sets of bearings. This is why I didn't mention them in a couple of my videos. They keep bearings stable, and allow the wheel to be tightened securely to the truck axle. This makes the wheels function more efficiently. Spacers also reduce axial loads (side loads) on bearings. You can say spacers make bearings function faster and more durable.
@ThomasEmain
@ThomasEmain 12 жыл бұрын
You get really strong Q-tips. Hold a few together and then push from the other side of the wheel where the bearing is already taken out. I don't like using the truck axle because it scratches it up when it's really stuck.

I have the same tool! Mine is purple though. Cause purple is the shiz. But the plastic holding in the kingpin nut socket is pretty substantial and sometimes I can't get my trucks as tight as I would like. I skate loose so its not a huge problem. But to get them how I like them it takes a bit of work.

@yamaha212121 This is the easiest. And as you can see it works. What you have to do with a ring that is really stuck is pry in a circle. What I mean by this is pry the ring just a little bit, then move the screw driver over a tiny bit, pry, and then move again. Or you can pry in one spot, than turn the wheel a quarter turn and pry in that spot. Basically 12 o'clock, 3 o'clock, 6 o'clock, 9... It will come out, it just won't in one pry.

If you don’t want to destroy your wheel too, you can boil the wheel in a pot of water, and then take it out with tongs and pour cold water in the middle. Heating it will expand both the plastic wheel and the bearing, and pouring cold water in the middle will shrink the metal and make it easier to remove.
