Wow, so just go round and round and pick the chip right up? I'm still kinda scared to start using a hot air gun, unfortunately my current DIY project pretty much requires me to remove an IC chip undamaged similar to the chip in the video. Still debating if a hot air gun is the right tool for me. But you making it look so easy does add a little to my confidence for what that's worth.
@ecurepair2 жыл бұрын
Its not too hard to start with and definently the right tool for removing smd ic's. Just practice a little first on junk board.

which temperature and airflow you recommend for chips like that mate?
@ecurepair3 жыл бұрын
Generally I leave hot air on full speed at 450c. I will turn it down only if working with small stuff. You can easily control the temperature by adjusting distance of nozzle.

@@ecurepair with that high temp and max flow I’ve damaged some chips but at least I’ve removed some stubborn ones without damaging any traces
@ecurepair Жыл бұрын
@@f1lupo Yes, you need to really pay attention to your distance and dwell time or you will cause damage for sure. I should always point out that since I work on automotive stuff its generally still attached to aluminum casing. Normal boards 350c is probably safest.

@@ecurepair can you use solder paste too?
@ecurepair Жыл бұрын
@@f1lupo Yea you can use paste. You'd want to wick up what's already there in that case so you dont have too much solder on each joint.

Hello One question please: Why adding flux before removing and installing the new chip ? I thought flux is only a cleanser (for cleaning)
@ecurepair Жыл бұрын
it enhances solder's wetting ability and helps it flow better

@@ecurepair thanks a lot for the reply and help Another question please: How the new chip stick to the board without adding any solder (like solder paste) ?
@ecurepair Жыл бұрын
There is solder there. I had tinned the pads prior to using the hot air gun again to set the chip
@gilbertknight6617 Жыл бұрын
@@ecurepair what do you mean by you tinned the pad? Sorry if i'm questioning a lot but my phone died and i need to replace the power ic chip and i never done that before and i have no experience Thanks again for the help
@ecurepair Жыл бұрын
@@gilbertknight6617 @0:51 I use my iron to add solder from the tip to pads and even out the solder already there from where I removed the chip. Adding solder to a surface like a bare wire or a bare smd pad is called "tinning" .

what should I do if there is like plastic near the component or other heat sensitive parts near by?

You can protect it pretty good by covering it with kapton tape or aluminum foil

Is it me or you placed the ic in the wrong position because the dots in the footprint and in the marking did not match....
@ecurepair6 ай бұрын
Its you. There is no marking dot on the pcb. Just via's. The one you think is a foot print marker is just filled in with solder. Watch the beginning closely. The chip was placed correctly.
