I've had about seven or eight French cars in the past few years, they have all been a horrible experience to work on. I have an AX and some of the jobs I've had to do on that have been ridiculously difficult - speedo cable, door locks, cv joints, ugh.

Your video helped me out. I have a 2006 Audi A3 and the CV joint was stuck onto the axle. I used CV joint puller (no luck). I tried to hammer it off (per the manual), but it wouldn't budge. I ended up doing exactly what you showed using an angle grinder. I wouldn't had thought of this so thanks!

I did it exactly as shown in the video and I was able to remove the half-shaft joint after several days of unsuccessful attempts. Thank you very much for the idea and the video!

The ring on the drive shaft compresses when you hit the ball carrier off the shaft, you do not have to cut and grind it free. Use a punch and hit the ball carrier next to the shaft with shaft in a vise, using a 3 pound sledge, it will come right off, maybe 3 taps. I understand your putting a new CV joint on an existing shaft, but lots easier to hit off. And what if all it needs is a new boot, dont waste your time and money.

That doesn't work on all CV joints, apparently. Some CVs do not have a chamfer machined in the iinner CV hub that compresses the ring.

A wood drift on the inner collar, Held tightly on the shaft and hit with a club hammer, within two or three whacks it will be free and Undamaged !

Luckily I did not believe this video to be true. Outer cv-joint came loose from the shaft with a light tap on the innermost part. This was the original part on a 2006 Ducato camper. Also the replacement boot from Löbro came with a new round wire retainer.

Hi Gui, Dependent on your CV Joint manufacturer and car. This is the proper way to do it when you do not have the access to the metal ring locking the Joint in place - especially if you do not want to damage CV Axis. If you have a better way please share it. A lot of people will be grateful for that. Cheers

I've always managed to knock it past the splines by rotating and tapping with a drift. I've got a boxer to do so I'll put a video up when I get round to it.

Strange and wrong way of doing it. To remove the CV joint from the axel you simply hit it a few times in the direction from the inner to the outside of the axel. It sits the same way a socket sits on the square tap the ring will compress when forced outwards OVER the ring. This way is dangerours and not advicable and could not be done with the driveshaft in the car. If you ran a garage and do it this way the customer have to pay 3-4 times more for time consuming way of doing the job.

@@fordoverholden +1 on that. I had a nightmare experience trying to remove CV joint on Citroen C3 MY2004. At first I was trying to get it off while axel was on the car. Taping didn't help. Then I removed axel. Took bigger hammer, still no mowement. Simply had to cut it with the angle grinder at the end. My patience simply disappeared after fighting for 2 hours with the damn thing.

The retainer clips in these cv axles have a square cross section, so they are not like axle stubs that just pop off. You can access the retainer clip from the shaft side of the CV joint, spread them so they are no longer captive in the groove, then tap the joint off. Some times the joints are really seized on those splines. This indeed looks like an April fool’s joke

not sure... a bought an SKF CV shaft for my Volvo V70. the rubber boot is broken and I need to replace it again. but I only bought a CV joint instead of a full axle. FAG joint is a normal clip, but I need to be removed the old SKF joint in the same way

1° you don´t need to drain all the gear oil, just pool out the axel, catch the oil that´s spils out, about 1lt, so that you don´t have to refill the hole thing. 2° you don´t need to destroy the CV joint, it´s most likely perfectly fine, just give it one good dry hit on the edge and it will separate despite the retainer ring inside. It´s a nightemare the amount unnecesary work you do.

You have probably never come across a terribly designed CV joint. I was replacing the joint on my dad's car and the locking ring got wedged in there, in a way that made it completely impossible to get out. The inner part of the gear that carries the balls wasn't tapered properly so the ring would make it stuck. Only solution was to cut the housing open and get it off. The inner gear was removed by inserting needles that would compress the ring while pulling the geat off the splines. Don't be a smartass

In a lot of 3rd world countries we don't have the luxury of changing the whole thing because it's either not available or the cost is so excessive that it's triple or quadruple the price of doing it this way. In my case buying a whole axle is quadruple the price. Indonesia doesn't have AutoZone. I'm American and live in Indonesia. I miss everything being so cheap and easy. Don't take it for granted! Trust me!

Rather than do this I would buy a whole new drive shaft. You get new joints and boots and a warranty. Complete shafts are not that expensive and they are so much easier to remove as a whole and then replace. Saves so much time and faffing.

Hi Борис, Heater Control Bypass Valve controls coolant flowing through heater core - controls passenger inside area temperature. I think this is only fitted on the Diesel cars. Do you have a diesel? Cheers

Some are a nightmare and have to it cut out or replace the full shaft. Most of the folk saying this is a laughable way to remove a CV joint are obviously not mechanics, if they were they would have came across this issue time to time. Im in shock. This is no way to remove a cv Joint. Why dig around trying to remove bearings (not bolts) when a sharp hit with a hammer and wood drift will separate the entire joint from the Shraft? Duh!

Sorry, this isn't a good instruction video. Removing the CV joint from the shaft is much easier and safer by simply using a hammer and popping the joint off. Sorry to the video maker. This isn't the best way.
