Kyle forgot to tell you…the car needs to learn the surface and it will always get faster but then you fight the battery level dropping. Plus im pretty sure when you kill power from the fireman loop that resets a lot of the driving surface learning data, range, suspension, etc the car has defaults but needs to learn like a baby in a lot of ways. Cant wait to see what you turn it into!!!!

Something to keep in mind as it looses weight. Tires they use for electric cars are extremely stiff tires. That way they can handle the weight. As you remove weight, they will lose the ability to grip. Might change them out for some more normal tires as long as they can handle the weight.

@@dookiebooger9967 this is what needs to be done. The roof glass weighs a lot less than you expect though. If they were to swap it with steel plate like someone said it will weigh more. Also swap the air suspension for the unplugged coil over setup. Wheels and tires can be lightened a decent amount as well. The battery and motors together make up about 1500-1600 pounds of the car. Make sure you keep the aero that is feeding the radiators or you will start having battery heat issues.

I dont think they have any adaptive tech in them to learn anything as far as driving characteristics or driver input.. they have the thing with their auto pilot that sends off the information it did when used.. like iphone does with its analytics “to improve security and functionality”. But as far as the car adjusting anything based on performance i highly doubt it.. traction ctrl works based off of individual tire rotation sensed with typical hall effect sensors on each drive axle off the motors so is more of a direct drive immediate adjustment to stop the car from veering off to one side if shit happened.. the abs just senses the vehicle g force, speed, and possibly obstacle avoidance to apply the brakes differently to slow the weight down without losing as much grip….

One important note about the 12v cut loop you were talking about is that while opening that circuit opens the contactors in the battery it also disables the thermal management systems so it can actually cause a thermal runaway condition that the TMS was handling to get out of hand. That said, it is still a good idea to unplug that when you are working on this car :)

Couple things. We often think of it as traction control because in an ICE vehicle timing is pulled out and the brakes are applied momentarily to try and regain traction, but in an electric car its actually torque control. Electric motors can provide an immense amount of both low end torque and precise control of torque. The computers in electric cars are constantly calculating what it thinks the limits of traction would be and are supplying the motors with just enough power to produce that torque. That's why, as other's have said, the computer has to "relearn" the weight of the vehicle and how it behaves when you floor it. In fact, "drift mode" in an electric car is pretty much disabling the torque control so that whenever you floor it the tires just instantly break loose and start spinning. Next, tires have a weight rating not for holding the vehicle off the ground, but for when you are slinging the weight around by accelerating or braking hard. What that means is if you put a soft compound tire on a heavy car, you end up just tearing off the surface of the rubber like how chalk, a pencil, or an eraser leaves material behind. If you use a hard compound on a light car, you just slide across the surface. So tire manufactures have to carefully balance the compound, with how long the tire is supposed to last AND the weight of the vehicle it is going to go on. This is also why motorcycle tires can have a very soft compound. *You need softer compound tires that have a lower weight rating now that the car is lighter.* Finally, this car would perform a lot better as a track car now and be able to take tighter or faster turns. It'll probably dominate in spectator drags around the freedom factory.

I think you only made it so that there isn't as much load, which the motor controller saw and adjusted for it. I believe if you have made the car heavier, to a point the times would still be consistent. I think you are only effecting range with taking weight off until you play with the motor controller, you have to tell it to go faster and accelerate on a different curve persay due to the change in available traction. So adjustments for acceleration and traction are needed electronically to make it faster and quicker and to reap the benefits of being lighter besides a longer range. Beware, I might be wrong

So tire manufactures have to carefully balance the compound with how long the tire is supposed to last AND the weight of the vehicle it is going to go on. This is also why motorcycle tires can have a very soft compound.

@@Jake-bt3fc I second this statement. I'm not sure what he's trying to get at, but neither of us have gotten into any of the physics yet. Furthermore, in the example he just provided he specifies "M/T 275 Street radials on the rear," thus proving my statement of stickier tires contributing to an improvement. I agree that the weight rating/ load index is not the singular contributing factor, but my understanding is that it, together with the width, limits how soft the compound could be. When you have a wider tire, you can use a softer compound and not change the weight rating because the weight is spread out over a wider area. Each square inch does not have to grip or resist sliding/tearing as hard or as much. An eraser is easier to tear up and rub material off when held on its end or on a corner than when it is held flat. According to the physics the force of friction is only the normal force, or how hard the two surfaces are pressed together, multiplied by the coefficient of friction. Surface area is not considered in these simple equations. My point is in real life we must consider surface area because of material failure.

If you actually want to meaningfully reduce the weight you'll need to deal with the batteries. Everything else on the car is already as light as possible by design - you're only going to gain so much by cutting. That battery is good for several hundred miles of range which is overkill for what you're doing. Best bet would be get rid of it and go with one from a smaller electric car (Nissan Leaf, Chevy Volt, etc). AEM makes what's effectively a standalone ECU for the Tesla (VCU200). It won't care if you ditch all the electronics and it's probably your only option if you want to start messing with stuff any deeper. At a certain point you should just buy the Tesla motors from a wrecker and throw them in a lighter chassis. See Rywire's Tesla swapped Honda stuff for inspiration.

@@newtonfirefly3584 I'm an automotive engineer who designs these btw. I don't really see the point you're trying to make. Their last vid they managed to get it down to 4000lbs with just about everything missing. As I said, there's not a whole lot more room for loss unless they drop the battery. If they drop to a couple Volt/Leaf packs or similar they can easily shed 700-1000lbs. Good luck dropping that with wheels and tires. Is 1000hp in a 4240lb car fun? Sure. Is 1000hp in a 3240lb car more fun? Probably.

@@newtonfirefly3584 Again, I don't see a point you're trying to make. You come in argumentative and dismissive but everything I said is true. This is a heavy car, 4000lbs with a Leroy style cage. Most of the weight is in the stock battery. They don't benefit from the range that it can offer so *for their application* they're better off going with a smaller pack. Should they still do light wheels and tires? Of course but it will only gain so much. Leaf/Volt/Prius packs are plentiful and can be configured to deliver the peak current they require. They'll need an unlocked VCU to make it happen. The AEM VCU200 is a suitable option. It's able to control the PEUs, TMM, BMS, etc with way more flexibility than they'll get hacking up the original computer. There's already others out there such as Rywire who are Lego piecing these things together. If anything I said is actually incorrect or baseless please let me know; I'm always happy to learn.

@@jsheradin As stated, You proposed idea has valid concepts for power/weight, especially since for drag racing the amount of electrical charge storage is minimal; perhaps comparable to having a small fuel cell. However, as stated, with Tesla, Rimac, all production electric, hybrid vehicles and many modern production vehicles from 2010 onward, the computer control, S.w, F/W are completely locked, unchangeable, intentionally, purposely with the manufacture retain all controls, updates, modification, limitations, in addition to the complet, all-time, location tracking, data gathering, storage, etc. Thus, no modifications to, with, any of these vehicles can be accomplished which interface with the computer. thus, also these vehicles, including Tesla, Rimac, Nissan, GM/Chevrolet, Porsche, etc. are not good platforms to use beyond the production version, especially for any possible modifications, improvements, except removal of items which are not connected with the computer control system. Then add the detriment with retained manufacture control with each vehicle by remote, wireless connections which can also have automatic loss of use with disconnection too. Are You beginning to comprehend the situation, reality better and thus my posted comments, replies ? hopefully this reply will assist You further with Your thoughts, ideas, concepts, views, perspectives, perceptions, mindset, though there are many more details within these designs that perhaps only engineers, developers have the proper knowledge, which are simple and basic within those with these basis.
