Hey guys!! We are loving how much you participate on our videos and we really appreciate the fact that you comment! Unfortunately, as our lives are focused on the refit, we are lacking time to respond to you all! Please don't take us wrong! As it's really difficult to answer you individually, we are going to leave here some information over the main questions we receive. 1) Why are we spending so much time/energy/money on Yabá? - First of all, when we got Yabá we didn't really know how big the works would turn out to be... but respecting her story we decided we would still go for it as we learned that wood can be replaced and everything that's wrong with it can be fixed. Yabá was built to be a "carrera" competition boat, which is basically regattas for schooners. So its structure and hull were made for it to take waves and wind and well, sail. That is quite a rare find as most of the schooners in Brazil are made only for motoring along the coast line and the masts and rigs are usually scenographic. Yabá was made to be a sailor and we love the idea of having such a spacious and robust floating home that can allow us to have family and friends on board, scuba diving operations and, well, go with the winds too! 2) Time & Money - This seems to be the biggest concern of all. Of course a refit this big has its costs and will take a while. However, the numbers some people are sharing on our comments section really don't apply to our reality here in Brazil. We brought Yabá to a region where wooden boats are made and refurbished every single day. The shipwrights that work here have a huge experience on wooden boats... replacing a keel and replanking a hull are basically their daily jobs. So we are in good hands, experienced hands and quite fast hands too. So for those who think that changing our keel will take us 3 years and cost us 100 thousand US dollars... that guess is quite off. So don't worry, our refit is a lot more doable and reasonable than that. Guess how long it took for us to evaluate the keel + remove the rotten keel + build the new keel + install the new keel? 15 working days. And the wood used for building the whole new keel cost us R$3.392 (which is around 650 US dollars). 3) Our experience on boat construction - Our experience with boat construction is very close to zero and we have zero intentions to lie about that. We can consider ourselves sea people, as Ben grew up sailing and MP is a diving instructor, but not boat builders. For that reason we found ourselves a team of shipwrights that truly know what they are doing to make this rebuild happen. Our participation in that is to learn as much as we can so we can know every single detail about our boat, leave the specialized work to the specialists and get our hands dirty whenever the task to be done can be performed by us. We are willing to take on the interior refit by ourselves, but on the structural part, the most responsible decision is to leave it for those who know exactly what to do. So again, don't worry, Yabá is in good hands. 4) When are we giving up? - We are not giving up. Believe it or not, Yabá will soon be back to water and we know this will all be worth it. So guys, even though we truly appreciate those who worry about our well being, we ask you to be patient with our project and trust that we are doing the best we can to save the boat and be happy in the process. This project won't take as long and won't cost as much as so many of you fear. We hope all this information helped you have a better look on how this project actually looks like in reality. Thank you so much for being here! Feel free to ask more questions, we will try to answer individually or, again, we might answer many at once like we just did. FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS AND BE HAPPY Love, Ben, MP & Yabá!

@@alexandersupertramp1293 I think you didn't like the project and for some reason you always comment in a negative sense, and speak untruths, like the keel, this is a keel, there are countless types of oceanic vessels that use this type of keel, the counterweight on these vessels it is due to the ballast loaded in the hold of the boat, while the exposed wood is obvious that these woods will receive the right treatment before going to the sea, so honestly, I do not understand so much desire to come in to criticize, maybe it is not the best life project, but I believe it doesn't deserve so much aggression

There are a few things that give Ben and MP an advantage on this great project. First, you are fixing a Brazilian built boat in a Brazilian shipyard, so you are feeding the great pride of these wonderful people. Second, Brazil is a producer of the best woods in the World and they do so in great quantities in a very cheap way. That new keel would probably cost 10 times more in the US. Second, not only labor is cheap in Brazil but also workers do not waste time. The keel was removed in a very short time even using primitive methods and the new keel is already in the yard. Removing the bad planks will also reveal those ribs that need replacement or reinforcing. A wooden sailboat is like a Lego toy, you can exchange pieces without destroying the whole structure. Quite an interesting project and a wonderful comparison with other incredible projects like " The Sampson Boat" and "Acorn to Arabella". These are two boatbuilders that I would contact for some advice and opinions.

Hey guys, You two are hardcore and not easily dissuaded! Yep, those teredo worms really had a feast on your original keel! I don't know what is available to you where you are, but coating the bare wood with creosote before applying bottom paint acts as a good barrier to worms. This works really well on the bottom of the keel since you if you rub off some bottom paint you are otherwise completely unprotected. The creosote won't rub off since it soaks in. 2nd option is to install what is called a worm shoe, which is a sacrificial strip of wood fastened to the bottom of the new keel. Put coats of tar on the keel + a layer of tar paper between the new keel and the worm shoe and the worms won't cross the barrier. Easy to replace the worm shoe if needed if you use screws that can be removed easily. Wooden boats can last a long time if you understand how to protect them. Best of luck and keep having fun with this monster project! James

So yes, do everything that you can to protect this part of the boat. Worm shoes for wooden boats have been around for a long time and work quite well. Go go go go Yabbá. The incomprehension with a part of your followers arises from the fact that in europe and north america only museum boats are made of wood and they do not know the big wooden boatyards of South America (Chile also) or Asia and the hard daily work to which these carpenters are accustomed without cranes without big machines but with great knowledge ... and courage! Yes, people all over the world build boats of wood. And then those boats get old and they're discarded in favor of new boats built out of wood. The fact is these things have limited lifespans without constant maintenance, and unless it's a museum piece it's not worth restoring a rotten boat.

I have just binge watched all your videos today and I have refrained from commenting until now, I recommend that you take care of the water leaks that are on the roof of the house and the deck of the boat first and foremost mostly because fresh water damages wood really quickly compared to salt water. This is a known fact and needs to be addressed. Its just a recommendation that way you protect your new planks and frames. Good explanation. It sounds like you have a plan and are in a unique place with skilled craftsmen working for reasonable prices. By now you know it would be a lot quicker and easier to refit an old fiberglass yacht but you've chosen to do something unique and a little crazy and that's helping you gather an audience here on youtube. Since you said you'll wisely leave the major structural repairs to the shipwrights, one thing I would like to see more of on your channel is information about your location, the shipyards of Brazil. Who are the guys working on your boat and how did they learn their craft? Maybe show us some of the wooden fishing boats they are normally working on. These are some of the things that draw me to channels like "Tips from a Shipwright" with Louis Sauzedde, who visited a shipyard similar to the one you're in down in Chile. Also maybe more details about the process of working on a boat in Brazil. What kind of wood is your new keel and where does it come from? How much do things cost in Brazil and how do you find things you need?

It was great to "meet" the small army of builders who are working on your boat. It makes your project look possible. I think many viewers assumed that you were going to try to do these repairs on your own. My advice at this point is to keep using professionals as much as possible and to paint the inside of the keel with copper bottom paint so that worms will be less likely to migrate from the keel to the frames, etc. Wishing you all the best for the New Year from Juneau Alaska, Greg Chaney

Well I'm enjoying it, nice to watch something without epoxy. I always say if when rebuilding something, and all else fails, speak to men with beards. The men in the yard may not have beards but they have the sort of knowledge about wooden boats you cannot teach and pride. I have seen Yaba under sail, it is different and if it looks a good as the red one on the next slipway I will be very jealous. As to the comments on the sail-ability and purpose, it is about purpose. It is like the difference between my Lark, which is very technical and if you get it right, very fast, and you will get wet and my Mirror which is indestructible, simple, safe to take my children out on, can be a day boat, carry a picnic but can be raced. Your foredeck has a major leak that allowed freshwater/rain into the bilge/focsle area. This wet and drying cycle is what caused those forward ribs to rot. Fresh water fungus kills boats (dry rot). Keep rain out, find and stop water from getting into the decks and beyond to preserve wood.
