My dragon fruit plant has some rotting at the very base where it's in the soil. Will this method still work if it's still in the soil? Or should I remove it from the soil, clean out the rot, let it heal then replant?
@GraftingDragonFruit
@GraftingDragonFruit 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Nicky, it sounds like some root rot have may been happen if its rotting at the base. I suggest you take it out the soil. Inspect the roots and if it breaks at touch then you know its rotted. Cut a cross section .off , let it dry and replant it.

I have grafted cactus on a dragon fruit plant stem. Unfortunately, rain got to it before I had a chance to bring it inside. It started to turn yellow. I cut the bottom part that was yellow and placed it in a dry container to callus but the stem continues to turn yellow (not mushy or brown). Is the yellow ok?

I just got a huge dragon fruit plant off offer up for $9 yesterday. It’s very thin in most top areas which indicates lack of sunlight. Even though I got it in El Cajon, the guy had it growing in a yard in back of his condo with only a few hours of sunlight during the middle of the day. It was climbing up his fence. He had no idea what kind of plant it was. He only moved in 3 months ago and the prior tenants left the plant. I am sure this plant probably produced fruit at some point. Because it looks like a really mature plant. I did however know what kind of plant it is, because I have a couple other dragon fruit plants. It’s in a 5 gallon container in decent soil. Another succulent growing out of it. I barely fit the miles of dragon fruit branches in the back of my car. I noticed once I got it home, there’s a couple rotten spots, and a white film on some of the thinner branches. The branches are kind of brittle as well. How should I treat this plant? Maybe I’ll cut all the thin branches off and the rotted spots away but I need to know how I can protect this plant from further fungus. I live in PB. So it should do very well here. Hopefully it will fruit next year. Thanks for the video!!! I’ll be waiting for an answer from the dragon fruit guru. 😅

Something ate the base of my dragon fruit plant. I suspect it got to the root of it because there was a hole dug at the bottom of it. The plant has stopped growing and is hardening and has wrinkles on the branch. Is there a way to safe it. It's about 4 foot tall.

I'm in Hawaii growing DF for the first time. One of my climbing, vertical segments split horizontally leaving more than half the segment open. The next segment doesn't appear to be growing anymore. I don't know if I should cut back to the original segment to let it start growing vertically again or just leave it alone.

@GraftingDragonFruit
@GraftingDragonFruit 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Melissa, yes I would cut off the yellow tip to where it’s green again. They do this sometime to preserve energy when they are trying to root. They kill off the tip so it doesn’t continue growing and use energy to root. Your cutting is still okay! No need to worry until it shrivels up and turns entirely yellow.

Hi Joanne, it sound like it might have a minor sunburn or if there isn’t intense heat for you and it’s yellow then it just be that you are deficient in iron and magnesium. You can get this by mixing 1tbsp per gallon of Epsom salt to water and feeding them. Do this once a week

Hello! Wanted to ask if my dragon fruit plant is diseased. It’s my first time growing a fruit plant. The dragon fruit has been indoors until the last few months as the weather got warmer I took it outside. Noticed it started to have white spots all over. And some spots have a white, dry patchy appearance to it. Some say it can be from sunburn? But looking it up I’m still not so sure if it’s sunburn or some sort of disease from being overwatered. Any advice? Thank you.

Is that caused by sun damage or overwatering? I had that happen to a couple of my cuttings after i removed the sunscreen i have around the trellis. One callused over on its own while the other has some mushy parts at the base. Top part callused over without me cutting at it. I guess i saw it in time and put the suscreen back around the trellis. I had 1 that i had to remove a big portion of the mush but its still thriving. I use that for my grafting experiments 😄
@GraftingDragonFruit
@GraftingDragonFruit 5 жыл бұрын
This was caused by sunburn, when moving this plant from my parents to my new home it got the area with the most sun because that was the only spot I had left for it. I would think it would be fine but its definitely getting some damage. You did the right thing by removing the mushy part. They will be fine. Dragon Fruits are so resilient to these minor damage and bounce right back once its been taking care of. They will heal and callous right over and be back on its way to a health plant!

Rotting is caused by weather, it is caused by taking cuttings from a location with different climate, it’s the plant that is inability to adapt, so when you like a dragon fruit but you are located in a places with a bit different climate from the original plant, grow them from seeds so when they grow up from your locations they have a better chance to adapt and less chance of rotting.

@GraftingDragonFruit 5 жыл бұрын
D GAMER, you are absolutely right! Growing from seeds will have the plants that are originated from different origins will adapt better and fuse with the weather conditions that they have sprouted from. That is why growing a dragon fruit from seed and grafting them is ideal because it will make sure that seed will thrive in the area that it is in. Once heat gets high here I have to start battling with sunburn from the dragon fruits that i've obtain from other growing areas. That's amazing that you've been moving with your plants all over the country for 16 years. That is super cool my friend. It shows that you love your plants and can't leave them behind!

Have you ever considered using a shade cloth during the hottest time of the year ? Maybe even build a retractable shade cloth that blocks 20% of the sun ? That way you could pull it over during the hot month and the occasional intense sunlight throughout the year.
@GraftingDragonFruit
@GraftingDragonFruit 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Doug, i'm in South California so my weather conditions are ideal. In the summer time it only gets to 85F-95F. Only when we have a bad heat wave coming it will reach to 95F-100F and would only last for about a few days. When this happensI just throw shade cloth over the plant directly until the heat wave has pass. Or I just move them into my patio where there is a cover with shade. Thats the main reason I keep my dragon fruit in pots.

There are multiple factors that can cause rotting. Disease, sunburn, root rot, pests, and deficiency. This was caused by me leaving water on a branch and not noticing so the sun cooked that portion off. I will never make that mistake again! Gardening is a life learning experience. :)

Hello Richard. I'm a bit upset in myself. This weekend, my friend from OC gifted me a whole DF plant to care for in my garden, very beautiful and healthy plant. I live in LA, and there have been a heat wave this week. Just after a day in LA heat, one whole side of my DF turned white, I immediately moved it to the shade. Now, the white sun-damaged parts are dried up, not looking too great. I am debating if I need to need to perform this surgery, and I am not certain if I need to, because it doesn't look or feel rotten.
